Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Review Thread

I know Nintendo is in trouble, but trying to squeeze as much money as they can from the little group of aficionados remained can't be good for businesses...

Nintendo is not in any trouble at all. Overreacting over game reviews much? When Xenoblade X comes out to rave reviews are you going to go the opposite way?

Ummmm this list just proves how good Nintendo was this year. Some of those games Nintendo did not even make so I am not sure what you are trying to prove.

*looks at list* Really?

Even sssuming we leave Xenoblade 3D and Majora 3D up there as charitable gimmes, that's a pretty bad year for two platforms.

Don't get me wrong, the highs are high. But the lows are many, and some are incredibly disappointing.

It is pretty clear they are working on NX. 3DS having a decent last year, but seems Wii U is slowly dying.

Splatoon and Yoshi having such low scores shows how much of a joke reviews are.

I kinda understood Splatoon since those were when it first released, when it had little maps and stuff, but Yoshi definitely deserved better from what I've played. Then again, I find enjoyment in some middle-tier titles as far as ratings go. I think anything 70+ is, at least, good and could be an enjoyable experience. I understand why Mario Tennis and Amiibo Fest are rated so low; they just felt so rushed to me and lacking in content from my point of view.

Yes really. This is really no better or worse than any year from any of the major publishers, in fact that might be better than most of the major publishers this year

Awful holiday line-up for Wii U owner, thankfully Mario Maker released earlier and Xenoblade X will save it for some.
I'm not asking for a RPG mode but I really wanted a big Mario Tennis on console, at least Mario Golf NX will be amazing, the 3DS game was well done.

What? Nintendo published all of those games. Unless you're trying to talk about the developers, but even then the majority of traditional Nintendo games were outsourced and not from EAD.

AC amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis were major duds leading to Nintendo's most important time of the year. Nintendo better be hoping Sakurai's team will deliver, because it looks like Smash Bros DLC is their biggest news this holiday.

is in trouble sales wise, not quality wise.
this game sounds like a cheap cash in at the expense of its loyal fans.. and that can't be good in the long term when you don't have that many customers to begin with

if a Nintendo fan can't even trust Nintendo's game to deliver, there's a problem

This and Amiibo Festival weren't going to be the big sellers this holiday. These are padding titles for padding, they have actual things to market as one can tell by what their commercials are marketing. The same titles its "loyal fans" have already bought and gushed about.

Fall line up. The games Nintendo seem to be pushing for the holiday really are Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, along with YoKaiWatch on the 3DS. I imagine some Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D World/Land are thrown in there as well. Those are the games and the games in bundles they're pushing. I would like it if Xenoblade were apart of that as well. It really should be.

Back on topic. I really don't get why they just didn't port Mario Tennis Open to the Wii U.

People like Mario Tennis games. If this game where good, it would not be an issue.

No game company delivers every time. Not Sony, not microsoft, and especially not Nintendo. You are being unrealistic.

Can't stop that one-of-a-kind Nintendo quality™, better than ever before

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D - 89
Super Mario Maker - 88
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D - 86
Stretchmo - 83
Splatoon - 81
Yoshi's Woolly World - 78
The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes - 74
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - 73
Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition - 73
Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure - 69
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer - 67
Mario Party 10 - 66
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water - 66
Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash - 62
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash - 59
Pokémon Shuffle - 56
Pokémon Rumble World - 56
Devil's Third - 43
Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival - 35

They better impress with NX, because next year doesn't look promising either with Metroid Party and some Starfox-skinned gamepad tech demo.

I was about to make a Thread about this whole thing with Nintendo this year, and i needed a handy List, i'm gonna take this one, thanks! :)

Guys this totally wasn't rushed out to pad an anemic Wii U release schedule for the holidays. Why would you ask?

It is not just the missing features that bother me but the whole concept.

If they set up the game to receive free DLC like Splatoon I wouldn't be as angry if it was outlined early but megamushroom is just terrible. I want back character specific transformation like Power tennis. The chance shot is just dumb and they brought it back, why?

There are no gimmick courts at all
No special modes
No RPG which people have been begging for for a long time

There is nothing that shows they are going in a specific direction that would make this game go from okay to great.

So the online doesn't save it? Shame. I don't usually care about reviews a lot but this is actually kinda worrying.

I was mainly buying it for the online this time. I mean I love Mario Tennis but I was hoping to have some decent online action for once.

Doesn't sound like it's all that great in this.

Granted. I didn't play World Tour on the 3DS because I heard that wasn't stellar either. Seems that they were continuing off of that :(.

Guess Ill keep playing Power Tennis on the gamecube. I was really looking forward to this too.

It's weird the early handheld games have the more robust RPG modes while the console version never had that. You'd figure the handheld experience would be more compact and more on the go type gaming while the console version has the RPG mode. Console is more suited for multiplayer yes, but that's something that's to be expected anyways from this type of game.

Don't know why they felt the need to rush this game in for the holiday season when they have a killer bundle coming up. So many missing features that even the Gameboy color game had. All this game needed for me to buy it is the option to play with your friends, but like a sick joke they decided it was fine not to add that in. For that I'll buy it used and give Nintendo a piece of my mind.

Makes you wonder what the fate of Paper Jam's going to be.

It looks pretty rehash-y. I don't have much faith in it, speaking as a big fan of both series.

Doesn't help that both Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi's previous 3DS entries disappointed, too (for me, anyway).

Well, it can only go up from here. Xenoblade will probably receive decent reviews at the very least (low-mid 80s probably), and the 2016 Wii U games at least won't be phoned in even if Star Fox doesn't turn out great. And aside from Federation Force most 3DS titles will be fine. But yeesh, this is a bad holiday.

So from my understanding, the recent Mario Golf is great, but the recent Mario Tennis isn't?

That's too bad, because I loved the latter since the 64 game, but the Gamecube' Power Tennis wasn't grabbing me.

How can Nintendo fix this?

So is the game actually bad or are reviewers just pissed about the lack of content?

I bought the game JUST for 4-player doubles offline. I hope I didn't fuck up.
