Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Review Thread

Why would they? :p
Their holiday commercial has been running for over a month and focused mostly on the 3DS, TriForce Heroes, Super Mystery Dungeon and Smash.

Their big holiday bundle is a Wii U with Smash and Splatoon. And their focus as far as big releases go this Holiday is Xenoblade X.

Plus they already had a Direct with amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis last week.

They already did the spins. :p

To elaborate:

Much as there was public outcry over the 3DS "Metroid" game, and the E3 Direct itself, I am expecting at least one journalism outlet(or fan outcry) to force a statement from Nintendo over the bad reviews for its last two products. Not saying such is pretty or fair, but I am expecting it nonetheless. If not that, then likely some PR speak in December once Nintendo's (likely dismal at this rate) November numbers come in. I mean, I'm quite happy with Yoshi's Wooly World at the moment(and picking up Splatoon on Black Friday for $25 will likely be awesome), but I'm expecting a lot of unpleasantness heading Nintendo's way this holiday from vocal fans.

You can't match up with your friends?!

LOL

Now I know why people were skeptical about this game having online at all.

Small other thing that bothers me is that the narrator doesn't list the characters' names after each game/set/match, just "server" and "receiver". It was a nice touch in the other games.

You're being awfully generous to Open with 8 QR characters. There really was only one "proper" QR character, with Metal Mario. Unique voice, sound effects, etc.

The rest are just alt colored Yoshi. Something Power Tennis had as an easter egg.

True, it's a stretch, but I counted them as separate due to the Yoshi Hunt that apparently took place in Europe (1 QR code per color).

Shy Guy wasn't in Open either. Neither was Koopa actually. And actually Paratroopa is the original Koopa in tennis, Open was the first (not RPG) tennis game without Paratroopa or Shy Guy.

This tennis cut from open

- Diddy (from Power Tennis)
- Metal Mario (new)
- Baby Mario (from 64!)
- Baby Peach (new)
- Luma (new)
- Colored Yoshis (I guess?)
- Mii (how???)

And added
- Rosalina
- Spixie
- Toadette
- And also brought Toad back, having not appeared since 64

The roster is awful.

Awful roster indeed. At least Sprixie is cute and all but other than that... Meh :(

I was looking forward to playing it locally with friends, this thread is raising my doubts on wether should I pre-load this or not, sometimes I really hate gaf.

Seriously though, anyone played 4 players locally? how is it? the game mechanics seem pretty solid, but I find the lack of power shots heart breaking, it added so much charm to games :(

It is barebones tennis. Instead of powershots it is the megamushroom which is a terrible and unimaginative change.

If you are looking for just tennis then it is fine. If you are looking for the Mario charm and magic then look elsewhere.

Nintendo should probably stop with the shitty spinoffs. I know they're just trying to pad out a skimpy holiday lineup, but I'd much rather want nothing than a bunch of half-assed efforts that are actively detrimental to the series/brand.

EDIT: Not to say Mario spinoff games are shitty in concept, just saying they shouldn't greenlight spinoffs if they're gonna be this shitty.

Their Mario Sports line are not shitty spinoffs. If this was a quality title, lot of people would be buying this.

I feel like you could just play older games in the series

this game seems really bad, so much so that the money spent isn't as much of a factor as the opportunity cost of playing this game vs. another game

My N64 is in storage and I don't need every game to be great. 5/10 is meh to mediocre. I'll occasionally pay money for mediocre.

Another mediocre Camelot Software Planning effort? how surprising.

With the exception of Mario Golf: World Tour which was a sort of return to form despite missing rpg elements, they haven't done anything of quality in almost a decade. They even killed Golden Sun franchise.

what?

Sadly, we saw this coming when we read how bare bones the game was. I'm sure the core tennis gameplay is pretty good, but it's just not enough to justify a 40-50€ purchase. Maybe they should've released both this and Amiibo Festival as eShop games, the former for 19€ and the latter for free (just buy the amiibo and play the game).

Anyway this is a good chance to redirect Camelot to JRPGs (not necessarily Golden Sun, a new ip would be nice too), just give Mario Sports Games to the Wii Sports guys. Also no more gimmicks (or at least confine them to some special mode), just focus on content and core gameplay.

Camelot is pretty much WayForward to me: When they are on point, they deliver. However, they often make boring games which it is a shame this seems like another one.

the last 18-24 months of the Wii U console (from mario maker to whenever the NX comes out) is going to do damage to Nintendo's brand, what a fucking mess.
No doubt, perhaps combining the handheld and console libraries is the best course of action for them. The current way is not working. Hopefully Pokken will be great. I am thinking Star Fox will be 70-ish.

Not quite. These are spinoffs (AC and Mario Tennis) on a dying console that never gained steam.

... but I'm expecting a lot of unpleasantness heading Nintendo's way this holiday from vocal fans.
Given that this is the same lot that reached "Sonic" levels of fanboy asshat with Fed Force I don't think that sort of shade being thrown is going to be much of a bother to Nintendo.

The reviews are another matter (not that Camelot have been pulling their weight as of late in the realm of Murry'em'ups) but the fans will fan their fans with fantastic frantic fanaticism.

Only being able to match against randoms and not your friends online is the most bizarre decision I've heard in a long time

Can't you download one of the older and better Mario Tennis games from the eShop? If you can, I would just suggest to save your money and get one of those classics. The same pretty much applies to all Mario spinoff titles.

Best wishes.

Not yet. Hilariously, Mario Tennis 64 is a time-exclusive pre-order bonus for Ultra Smash in Europe.

I had high hopes for this after being disappointed by the 3DS entry. I'm sure it's been said many times already, but I really want an RPG mode. :(

I guess I'll pick it up Friday for simple classic mode Tennis with friends playing on the same couch. I wanted this to have more variety but I think I'm eager for a new tennis title to play- and in that respect, it seems to deliver!

Eh maybe it was answered before but can you play the new ultra smash locally with 4 players without any power ups like the old Tennis 64? Is the gameplay same as the old version or have they changed the physics?
Even now when i gather with friends the n64 version is on of the games we almost always play. The multiplayer is superb, very easy to get in and play but yet you can master the game well.Perhaps the best n64 multiplayer game look retroactively.
In my opinion they can just upgrade the old game with newer graphics, add a robust online mode and publish it. That is all it take to make a great mario tennis game

Nov 30 is the review embargo. We can stream on Nov. 19.

Gameplay wise the game is solid. Controls and looks great. For local and online multiplayer, you'll have fun. You'll just wish there was more offered from the game.

thats good to hear that the gameplay is solid as i mainly bought this game to have mario tennis online in HD

It's a real pity content and matchmaking wise it's so poor, because you know what? Gameplay is there and it's great, and graphics are pretty as well :( I'd even say if you just enjoy playing 2v2 with friends, buy it cheap.

So I've captured 4 gameplay clips from the 4 game modes, plus 60 1080p screens here:

Waluigi is of course the star. A total show. Look what he does when he scores...

This game at least is a looker. Character models look fantastic and of course Waluigi is GOAT.

Panic mode Nintendo is be-

...Maybe it's for the best they're not in constant panic mode. I really feel for them. Mario Sports games in general were never to my taste, but even seeing the trailer at E3 for this one was giving me bad vibes.

Here's to 2016 and Black Friday sales giving you a helluva boost

Holy crap is there an option to turn the music down?

I was looking for an OT but there's only this and a negative impression thread. =D

Anyway transcribed the staff list (glad that wasn't cut as well =P) and it's essentially the same as for Mario Golf World Tour. So either Camelot is essentially fed up doing those tennis games (golf clearly surpassed tennis in creativity quite some time ago), or they got way too little time (though they used to be more efficient with it), or there will be a slight update in time for the later Japanese release in January (not holding my breath).

I know they were in a rush to get this out, but I wish they would have at least done a new sport (like hockey or U.S. football), something that hasn't been done with Mario, at least as a main game, or another Mario Sports Mix. It's just getting tiring with all the gold and tennis games, especially if they don't add anything new.

I am glad they didn't attempt another sport with this kind of development. All Mario sport games are classics so if they are going to do another sport they need to put some time and money behind it and make it feature packed. What we got with Tennis is a fucking shame and embarrassing.

Anyway if they do another sport, it has to be American Football and Next Level Games needs to do it. Strikers was amazing, didn't really like charged only for the reason of how goals were scored/blocked using the wii remote. I understand they had to put some kind of Wii functionality in the game to justify it but I hated it.

I was looking for the OT but looks like there's no OT yet so yeah, the game has finally launched on the eshop. Rejoice...
