Marvel's New Female Iron Man is Named Ironheart

First thing that came to mind.

You're kidding yourself if you think Iron Heart isn't totally a gendered name

But not for the same reason "Iron Maiden" is.

One is a fundamental definition of a word, the other is a cultural assumption we've built up. There is no reason "heart" has to be inherently feminine. But also, even though it now is, so what?

Iron Maiden sets up an inherent dichotomy from "Iron Man", while "Ironheart" keeps the connection to the main character concept ("Iron") while sidestepping the "Ms. Male Character" trap.

But it is super curious how many people really think "Iron Maiden" would be a better choice.

Cool that they are finally giving these characters a different name instead of doing the Miles Morales/ female Thor route.

IronHeart sounds like a comic book starring Sean Connery as the Jarvis type AI communicating with her in the suit.

Iron Maiden(as said before) would have sounded bad ass but I'm sure somehow groups out there would find a way to make "maiden" a bad name and cause some outcry.

Probably the first crop of superheroes from the new and improved diversity marvel that would make it successfully on the big screen. Young actress no one heard of, lock her down for 10-20 movies and start phase 5 by then.

Yet that's the classic Marvel way.

  • She Hulk
  • Captain Marvel
  • Red She Hulk
  • X-23
  • Lady Mastermind
  • Spider-Woman
  • Spider-Girl
  • Namora
  • Lady Bullseye

They're a bit better now, but they were huge practitioners of "Ms. Male Character."

You forgot the best one, Lady Stilt-Man.

Huh? Passing the mantle has been a staple of DC's heroes for half a century at least, but Marvel's? Hasn't that only been something they've begun doing relatively recently?
It's happening more regularly, yes, but it has still happened. Captain America is a big one that immediately. comes to mind

I think the big reason for all of these legacy characters, as well as the major status quo change for Peter Parker, is that Marvel has their cinematic universe to worry about. They can't keep Downey, Evans, etc in the roles forever. Going off the success of The Force Awakens, Having the mantles passed on to a new generation is now a proven model in a long running cinematic universe. Marvel is using the comics as a testing ground to figure out who the cast of the Avengers movies will be in 10-15 years.

Actually, I think it has more to do with rights and character ownership and who gets paid what. I wish I could remember where I read this, but i think that's why we're so many different permutation's of different characters. If you think about it that way, it makes much more sense. Why promote a character with muddied rights when you can create a diverse offshhot that potentially doesn't have those problems? You just killed 2 birds with one stone.

That's one reason why i think there's no more "lady wolverine" or "miss whatever's"...besides the fact that its antiquated as hell.

Didn't the first time Ironman passed the mantle was some time on the 70's?

Also, love this cover. She's so cool looking of a character. I may have to get a print of this.

We'll see when Tony comes back. Meanwhile, we also have Iron Doom:

Probably right. I just want her to be her own thing. I don't want them to waste her by making her a "stand-in".

I don't really keep up month-to-month with this stuff, but it seems like a lot of the mantle-passing that's been going on has been to appeal more specifically to YA audiences. Is this accurate?

Yes & no.

Most of your favorite classics are still around but they are trying to update for this generation. Tony isn't going anywhere, Bruce banner is a hard one but they will figure something out. Wolverine was passed on to X-23 but Old Man Logan is still there. Thor was passed on but Classic Thor is still around. Captain American handed down to Sam and Sam handed Falcon to another new character but Steve is back as "A" Captain America and Sam still "A" Captain America.

As for Spider-Man, there are like way too many Spider people(imo, even though I like most of them) but Peter is still fighting as Spider-Man.

They do it most of the time because people are strange/silly and won't read new character books. They are basically trying to slowly ween people and baby step into new books while keeping the old alive. Notice that they still call the book IronMan. If this method works, I'm fine with it and it's for the best.

Why does the name even have to have 'Iron' in it? I highly doubt her armor is made of iron like Tony's first suit, which is where the original name came from.

They could have literally gone with any name imaginable, but instead have to piggyback off the name of an already well-known character.

We'll see when Tony comes back. Meanwhile, we also have Iron Doom:

This just rubs me the wrong way. Why would Doom stoop to wearing a suit designed by someone other than himself? I'd think his ego would make him stay in his own armor, whether or not it was better than a Stark suit.

well, they certainly want young people to become new fans of Marvel. they know the only way they can do that is if their heroes accurately reflect 2016 America - which means a more diverse group of protagonists & antagonists.

this is also a peek into what the MCU looks like in 2020.

Early 90's/Late 80's, I think

Well then buy her book so she gets popular enough that she won't just be a stand-in.

At the end of Secret Wars, when everything was restored and the Richards' family went off to remake the Marvel Universe, they healed Doom completely. Thus he has no need to wear his armor anymore. He's just been running around doing magic and trolling Tony. The idea of Doom stepping up a bit in order to turn over a new leaf is a cool direction to go, and having Tony die/go missing/whateverthefuck and Doom taking over is cool. Plus, he still has his own flair and I'm sure he'll mod his armor to be a little less like Tony's and more like his.

I still wish he had taken Iron Man and Riri would have taken War Machine, and we could have gotten a ridiculous buddy series, but I guess we can't get what we want.

Steelheart is cooler.

I can't lie, she caught my attention as a young boy.

I like the fact that the climax of Secret Wars was kind of Doom's rock bottom. In the moment, he ultimately had to admit that
Reed is smarter
, and the resulting ego hit seems like it has had a very liberating effect on the character since then.

who said Tony designed the suit?

Yeah but didn't he often boast about how his armor was better than Tony's?

Until Reed comes back to earth.

Yes, but...
Doom was humbled after Secret Wars.

Doom's armor is factually better than Tony's.
True, but...
Doom was humbled after Secret Wars.

Plus, Doom doesn't have armor anymore. No need for it, and unlike Tony, he's a beastly sorcerer. The first arc of Invincible Iron Man, Doom was just using magic. Assumedly he hasn't bothered doing any tech stuff yet. I'm sure that when he becomes Iron Man we'll get a scenario of Doom just being better than Tony. Much like Superior Spider-Man
