Hawkeye and Black Widow felt like such dead weight in this film. I know it's a minority opinion for sure but I just didn't give a shit when they were on screen...at all.

Baffling how they're paying her so much to reprise her role but still it's a huge step forward for Marvel and a good thing.

Hawkeye had the no-look shot.

Also, if we need this to not be a sausage fest then can we PLEASE get Carol, Marvel?

PosTer for ITEM 47:

Hell of a tease for something so inconsequential.

...Yeah, that's so mine.

BTW, anyone participating in the Avengers Initiative app? There's some cool things in the app, like dossiers and a gallery of the effects shots, but the big thing obviously is participation in the Item 47 event. It goes live during SDCC.

I have the app on my iphone and ipad. its pretty cool.

I keep checking the countdown for no reason at all, despite knowing that it goes live on Friday.

Also, the puzzle took me a bit to realize what it was exactly when solving it on my ipad... then took me no time at all on my phone after staring at the completed version. But really anxious to see what it's all about once it goes live.

Finally got around to seeing this with the family today. Until a month ago, the only Marvel film we'd seen was Iron Man 1 and 2, but the kids had seen neither. We did a sprint through them in the span of a month, skipping only Iron Man 2 since I didn't think it was essential (the kids only missed Black Widow's introduction).

Tuesdays the theater we caught it at does $5 shows, so it got a pretty good crowd despite dropping out of the top 10; not only a good crowd, but rowdy in all the right ways. Cheering and clapping when the Marvel logo came up (I cheered that the ads and trailers were finally over). Guys and girls yelling out their who they were rooting for (Captain America proved the favorite). I was worried it would continue into the movie, but they all shut the hell up during the show, except to react.

I'm glad we caught it both in theaters and with a good crowd, because holy crap was that fun. The intro was a bit of a sucker punch, quite jumbled and lacking context. But once it got moving, it brought the pieces together very well. I was impressed with how well the ensemble was juggled; it didn't feel like the film was playing favorites, and everyone got their moments and had a role to play.

It struck a pretty good balance with the humor and (light) drama, which helped keep things moving. Some of the interplay between the characters was hilarious (Hulk an Thor in particular). Technobabble aside (pretty dumb) the dialogue was mostly solid. You could tell it had a single writer behind it, not done by committee.

The action staging was well done, and while lengthy never overstayed its welcome. While staged and (thank goodness) filmed clearly, most of the direction was fairly pedestrian, with none of the grace or sweep that say, Cameron would have brought to the material. But it was good enough.

I read the first few hundred pages of reactions, and I really don't have much to add to what's been said, so I'll keep it quick.

A few short notes:

--Hulk's different behaviors during his two transformations seemed clear enough to me; the first was an uncontrolled change, at a time when he was angry with everyone. That carried over into his Hulk form, while in the latter it was a controlled change.

--Dude stole the movie. Loki-smash got a HUGE reaction from everyone.

--I was impressed with how Marvel laid the groundwork for The Avengers with all the other films. Seeing so many pieces and even minor characters come together was pretty neat.

--Who were the bad guys aside from Loki again? They were not well introduced.

--The ending battle was far longer and more elaborate than I expected, but it never dragged; it was very well staged and cut.

That's it. Really great time, thought it was comfortably Marvel's best (with the first Iron Man coming in after). Probably the best summer action film I've seen in many, many years, and one we'll own.

I don't think you need to spoiler tag lol
The aliens were the Chintauri (sp?).

Eh, I wasn't going to risk it. I read through the first week of release in the thread and tags were still going, so I was playing it safe.

Edit: Removed, somehow only just now noticed the thread title. It's late. :lol

Knowing the name of the race wasn't so much the issue as they really had no introduction. I got the deal they had with Loki, but given that the invasion was so critical to the film it was odd they didn't get much time to be anything but fodder.

If anything they felt like they were there to introduce Thanos after the credits.

The evil part of me wants them to troll all of the "But where's Spider-Man?!" people and get dat Jessica Drew up in there. lol

That would be maddening. And Spidey should be in Avengers (but his costume should be fixed first). And he should stop taking off the mask, really.

Is the extended version still coming to theaters for August? Or are they keeping that for DVD/Blu-ray come September? I been out of the loop, but wanted to catch it again.

Cap has so much swag in that last one. "Son...Just dont."

I'm personally looking very forward to the additional Cap footage come September. I loved the Captain America movie so much, in fact it may be my favorite of all the Marvel movies save Avengers.

It was probably less noticeable when I was watching it on a big screen, but damn, the CG already can look pretty jarring in this clip. It's still a great sequence though and they did a really good job with what they had, but I'll already be scared for the aging of the movie.

The fact that there's such a buildup for each means that by the time Avengers 3 comes out, it'll be WAY better looking than this one.

Yeah, it really stood out to me this time too.

Also keep in mind that almost everything in that sequence is digital outside of the few actor shots, including everything with the city backgrounds and buildings.

yeah, it's something you don't notice unless you're in the moment. Everything looks off here in the clip without the emotion needed to sell it. And I remember thinking that clip was awesome in the theater but watching it alone without the build up makes it a bit dry and boring.

The Hulk clip still gets me, though. Some of the dialog is pretty hokey but man, it's a great moment. Looking forward to getting the blu-ray in September (?).

And in less than 5 minutes of clips, Avengers delivered more comic book film nirvana than the entirety of Dark Knight Rises.

kind of a silly comparision, TDRK obviously goes for something different

and the last scene with Batman and Gordon was amazing, and worked much better as a comic book fan

why compare, this is why we cant have nice things
