Finally got around to seeing this with the family today. Until a month ago, the only Marvel film we'd seen was Iron Man 1 and 2, but the kids had seen neither. We did a sprint through them in the span of a month, skipping only Iron Man 2 since I didn't think it was essential (the kids only missed Black Widow's introduction).
Tuesdays the theater we caught it at does $5 shows, so it got a pretty good crowd despite dropping out of the top 10; not only a good crowd, but rowdy in all the right ways. Cheering and clapping when the Marvel logo came up (I cheered that the ads and trailers were finally over). Guys and girls yelling out their who they were rooting for (Captain America proved the favorite). I was worried it would continue into the movie, but they all shut the hell up during the show, except to react.
I'm glad we caught it both in theaters and with a good crowd, because holy crap was that fun. The intro was a bit of a sucker punch, quite jumbled and lacking context. But once it got moving, it brought the pieces together very well. I was impressed with how well the ensemble was juggled; it didn't feel like the film was playing favorites, and everyone got their moments and had a role to play.
It struck a pretty good balance with the humor and (light) drama, which helped keep things moving. Some of the interplay between the characters was hilarious (Hulk an Thor in particular). Technobabble aside (pretty dumb) the dialogue was mostly solid. You could tell it had a single writer behind it, not done by committee.
The action staging was well done, and while lengthy never overstayed its welcome. While staged and (thank goodness) filmed clearly, most of the direction was fairly pedestrian, with none of the grace or sweep that say, Cameron would have brought to the material. But it was good enough.
I read the first few hundred pages of reactions, and I really don't have much to add to what's been said, so I'll keep it quick.
A few short notes:
--Hulk's different behaviors during his two transformations seemed clear enough to me; the first was an uncontrolled change, at a time when he was angry with everyone. That carried over into his Hulk form, while in the latter it was a controlled change.
--Dude stole the movie. Loki-smash got a HUGE reaction from everyone.
--I was impressed with how Marvel laid the groundwork for The Avengers with all the other films. Seeing so many pieces and even minor characters come together was pretty neat.
--Who were the bad guys aside from Loki again? They were not well introduced.
--The ending battle was far longer and more elaborate than I expected, but it never dragged; it was very well staged and cut.
That's it. Really great time, thought it was comfortably Marvel's best (with the first Iron Man coming in after). Probably the best summer action film I've seen in many, many years, and one we'll own.
