Mass Effect 4 Main Character called Ryder, FemRy confirmed default. Spring 2017

Yeah, whatever that means.

I'm just gonna use their default first names to separate them once we know. Until then, I'm calling them Andy and Andrea. Because Andromeda.

I really love the default female look, I'm contemplating just using that. She looks great.
if the default FemRyder is a facescanned model/actress like default MaleShep was, it'll most likely look significantly better than most faces coming out of the character creator/editor

Weird considering they showed a male first.

They confirmed the N7-armored man in the first teaser is not the main character.

Spoilered speculation:
Pretty sure that guy turns out to be the antagonist or at least the McGuffin family member you're chasing most of the game. He had a pair of Ryder dogtags on his ship.

I always played with FemShep but with the MaleShep being the default character, it always kinda felt wrong. So this is fantastic news.

Has it been confirmed that you don't need to have played the previous Mass Effects to enjoy this one?

I'm a bit excited for this game primarily because I thought it was a new, self-contained story.

You have nothing worry about, it's a fresh start for the series.

"While it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. Mass Effect: Andromeda will be the first Mass Effect game for today’s consoles and the first built on the Frostbite engine. We’re pushing the technology to deliver visuals, story, and gameplay that have never been done in franchise history. We want to create new experiences for the player, but with elements of what you know and love about the previous trilogy. You’re going to see a certain amount of the old mixed with the new.

This is Mass Effect 4? I was under the impression they were making a prequel.

They thought for a New York minute about making a prequel, then they realized that the fanbase really, really, really was not interested in a prequel game set during the First Contact War (luckily) and so we're getting Andromeda.

It's kind of hard to not be against a prequel Mass Effect game when the trilogy makes just about everything irrelevant.

The only thing I can think of is the fact that the name will be perfect for both cool action hero names (Jett Ryder, Janet Ryder) and gay pornstar names (Dick Ryder, Lance Ryder)

I've already decided how I want my character to look, so I anticipate spending hours in the character creator just to get it right.

And then when they get into the actual in-game lighting or you see them from a certain angle you realize you created a hideous monster.

I managed to sort of fix my ugly-ass Shepard in ME2 but I more or less stuck with his dumb ass to the end.

I play ME games as a Female anyway so as far as I am concerned its the status quo around here. I don't know what game that is with a man running around calling himself Shepard? EA and Bioware should sue.

You know, i kinda wonder if they're going to make the native races even more alien to emphasize the notion that you're on a different galaxy. Has me wondering if they could scienesplain it somehow.

It wasn't too hard to make a nice non-default FemShep, but MaleShep... mother of god... I just ended up with a lot of Sheploos.

Is this game's development really going well? I remember reading an e3 2016 interview where I think the producer said that the vast majority of the team that worked on the mass effect trilogy has moved on to their new original IP and the people working on this game had experienced a lot of tension. Supposedly, the devs are also cutting a few features to make sure that they reach their tentative early 2017 release date.

To be honest the voice actor for her was the best while male Shepard sounded so bland and boring

People say this but I honestly disagree. I like Mike Meer more than Jennifer Hale. And I think the former has more range than the latter, especially considering he also voiced characters like the Vorchas.

Source for this? I have not read that anywhere, and I pay attention to Mass Effect.

It's known that a segment of the Edmonton studio is working on the new IP, but the majority of the studio is currently working on Andromeda, similar to how Montreal was working on Inquisition when it was getting finished up.

Also, it's always been known that Montreal was taking the lead on Andromeda, and not Edmonton.

Same here. Jen Hale's performance sounded way too try-hard badass, while Meer was very professional, but could let it rip with snark or righteous indignation when they let him off the leash a bit.

yet this is exactly what has been going on in 90% of video games for the last 40 years when it comes to women.

The hell? People have been actively lobbying to prevent female protagonists from being in games, for 40 years? Was there any significant segment of gamers pissed off in the 90s that Lara Croft wasn't a guy? Samus? (Well, with Samus it came as a shock to a lot of people, but I can't recall any campaign thereafter to turn her into a guy.) If that's not what you were asserting, feel free to set the record straight.

(Though with regard to the post you quoted this is irrelevant anyway, the exmachina guy revealed it was a [somewhat lazy, poor] troll post earlier.)

Same, I've been following EVERY tidbit of news on this game for the past couple years and also never heard that claim anywhere. I'd also like a source.

Yep. I prefer Mark. I think Jennifer did a rather solid job though. In any case, I hope the male Ryder makes for a fun protagonist to listen to.

I don't want to thread derail, but let's just say that many people are actively against female character in video games and I think it should be pretty evident of how both publishers and consumers alike react to feamle-only games or the inclusion of female characters. So excluding male characters from a game would be no different than what female characters already have experienced for so, so long in the games industry and culture.

I know it was a troll post, I'm just saying that the same logic is what has been going on against female main characters in video games for so long.

I think Hale did a much better job in ME1, Hale was the better Paragon and Meer was the better Renegade in ME2, and then Meer crushed it in ME3. Can't help but feel like Meer nails the comedic lines also, and as was just mentioned, he is awesome playing the Vorcha and the fucking Biotic God.
