MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA – Gameplay Series #1: Combat

Did you just make that up? Bioware cited memory restrictions as their reason behind Shepard not being able to holster his weapon in Mass Effect 3, that's all.
No there was also an issue with how they wanted to do a cracking animation for the columns as well. They've been on record complaining about the memory for the 360/PS3.

Then you have no idea what the costs of developing a game and the idea of budgets going to different departments. This is a complaint I never hear from people within the industry. Also I'd suggest you are being needlessly hyperbolic about something most people agree to be fine to good.

That's why the animations are brought up at and laughed at in every Bioware thread? People have been complaining about their animations for the past decade.

Finally! An actually extended segment of gameplay & divulging details - exactly what I've (and many others) been waiting for. Starting to get hype now, that looked like a lot of fun.

Wow, that looked great. I expected great things based on how good the ME3 combat was, but this looks like a huge step forward. Love how it's much more mobile, and the variety seems insane.

The animations and movement look smooth as hell too, which is weird coming from Bioware.

Watched this at work definitely the best trailer they've put out so far
Time to cancel the physical preorder and go digital baby!

More people buy their games than complain about the animations.

This isn't the first footage of a conversation we've seen in this game. It's not like this is the first time nor does it look to be an anomaly.

There's barely any changes in her facial expression and it looks stiff. Not to mention the expression itself looks bad, which seems to be a notable issue for Fem Ryder considering the number of people that bring it up. It's similar to how she looked when she had those dead eyes in the trailer when she pulled the gun off that guy.

Nobody is saying that the speaker needs to 'emote like a Hollywood celebrity'. It's not like there aren't games where we can look at and see how people actually look like when talking. You also don't really want to use that previous trailer as an example of Bioware's animations. I could then get into some larger issues with the body rigs during that interrupt.

As for the guy, he's expressing no emotions or doing anything with his body such as crossing his arms for example. It's not offensive but it's also not good either.

What does Horizon being a first party game have anything to do with the animations in particular? Do you think the limitations of the Xbox One are having an impact on what Bioware can do with the animations?

First party exclusives, while preferably having to turn a profit in and of themselves too, also exist to sell a platform. Which means bigger budgets than if they were only meant to be profitable, due to the fact that there is an extra avenue of indirect income.

As for the rest, you're just regurgitating what you've said before. The animations looks fine. And more importantly, they look to be an upgrade when compared to their previous games, which is what should really count.

Something cool I noticed, during the combat set piece on the desert outpost thingy it actually told you the different temperatures when you were in the shade vs out in the sun.

That kinda shit is a really impressive level of detail.

It's like the Haestrom Tali mission in Mass Effect 2.

You know, when the story was going to be about dark energy... then they switched gears.

I didn't see Adrenaline Rush as a skill; I've kind of suspected that they might get rid of it to make mp and sp gameplay more seamless but that's just speculation. Was it in any of the more specific videos or did I miss it?

You have to realize that video game forums in no way represent opinions of the gaming audience at large right? Bioware animations are low hanging fruit... something that's obviously not as good as they could be and are easy to identify but not meaningfully important to most people who enjoy their games and most people have no comprehension how difficult and time consuming it is to do great animation for even a 12-15 hour game, not to mention a 50-60 one.

People on gaming enthusiast forums are the minority of people who play these games. There are complaints here about things I never would have noticed on my own. Shit like how advanced the shaders are in regards to close up shots in a cutscene or the white levels in the eyes. That's the type of thing most people who play these games don't care about or notice.

The animations in Bioware games have been fine for the majority of gamers.

Adrenaline rush was the signature soldier move that slowed down time right? It's probably the reward ability for the Soldier profile in this game then.

Correct. You could be right but I'm a little worried about it. Not a deal-breaker by any means but I've always enjoyed bullet time in most games so I hope it returns.

Looks like its been replaced by an ability that increases damage based on kills. Disappointing if there is no other means to get slow time in SP.

I think those are actual combat hazards a la Mass Effect 3's multiplayer.

Presumably something happens like taking periodic damage or having increased weapon overheating while in the hazard area.

While it clearly is in the vein of ME2 and 3, it also appears to veer much further into the action part than before.
Most apparently by not having a global CD but individual CDs for abilities.
Also emphasising Melee much more than in 3 where it was just the omni tool attack.

When people say you can "respec" mid-combat, they're talking about switching your skill loadout and profile (swapping presets/"favorites"), right? Not actually completely refunding and reallocating all of your skill points? Presumably the latter is something you can do, but only back on your ship and probably at a cost, right?

The combat looks so smooth,I've waited 4 years for this and Persona 5, those few weeks are gonna destroy me lol.

I guess that a few multiple choice questions is enough to get an RPG pass nowadays then.

If moment-to-moment gameplay being mostly action/combat focused disqualifies a game from being an RPG, then Witcher 3 needs to give those awards back.

That game is Red Dead Redemption with swords/magic if you strip out the RPG stuff.

Lol, this is some grade-A, top-quality himalayan rose salt right here.

Yes, a game with an explicit focus on character exploration and dialogue choices, a leveling system, and extensive character customization - both cosmetically and in terms of skill loadout and playstyle - is an RPG. Shocking, I know.

Oh no wait, I forgot. Any game that has the audacity to focus on combat in a 5-minute combat trailer instantly has its RPG card revoked, by royal decree of King ScipiosDefence. My mistake.

The gameplay will blow out Dragon Age: Inquisition out of the water, so that's already a plus. :] Here's hoping the story can hold up and that they can control themselves when it come to side questing and avoid the Ubisoft open world syndrome. :p

Is it me or this game is very bland looking visually? seriously I expected so mich more from this engine considering how amazing BF/BF1 looks at 60, really disappointed by those visuals.

I usually put Bioware animation as the wrost from the AAA bunch but I do think the animation on MEA are looking alright. The problem is the facial animations but maybe it's because the character models are very bad.

Yep this is right.
I know this might be entitled but I want another game like fallout 2. Give us a similar game with the modern conveniences and watch the landscape change.

I'm assuming you've played Divinity: Original Sin. Because it was an absolutely godlike game but no it did not change the landscape.
