Mass Effect: Meet Nihlus Kryik

The Inside Track
PR said:
We’ll start off by introducing you to Nihlus Kryik, one of the Citadel Council’s most decorated Spectre agents. His skills are unquestioned, but his attitude is not. A confidant of Saren, the main villain in “Mass Effect,” Nihlus has learned a trick or two from the master. Eventually, he stepped out of his mentor’s shadow and established himself as one of the Council’s top agents. Since then, Nihlus has completed countless missions as a Spectre, each one more difficult and dangerous than the last. Though his methods aren’t as brutal as Saren’s, he will not hesitate to efficiently and thoroughly eradicate anything or anyone that stands in his way, so watch out.

Probably something to do with wanting the characters to have emotional impact, and people would probably find it hard to empathize with a gelatinous blob whose form of communication is subtle changes in skin color.

Good thing they ditched his working name of Badimus Stabb for a more ambiguous one.

Mass Effect's character/costume/overall design is some of the best this generation.

It's incredible. I'm holding out for a D2M15 Director's Cut that has no dialogue or gunfights.

Dude, totally. I bet he communicates through speech as well. I'm waiting for some western sci-fi where the aliens communicate through sign language, break the mold bioware!!!

Star Control 2 did a pretty good job of letting you interact with gelatinous blobbies and invertebrate lifeforms.

My favorite

So is he one of the evil-aligned allies in the party or boss battle in the game?

It says he is a Spectre. The Spectre are kind of the elite guard, or perhaps the Secret Service, of the Citadel Council. The Citadel Council is the governing body of the races that inhabit Council space - these races inhabit the same space, but there are tensions between them as well. Humanity is the newest race to get accepted into Council space, but humanity doesn't have a seat on the council.

Spectres are allowed to do anything necessary to keep Council space safe - they are pretty much above the law, and are general bad asses as well.

Novel spoilerish
One of the Spectres in the novel - Saren - turns out to be a villain.
I don't know how this character relates to that.

Gme look nice as usual. I'm just really dissapointed that if you don't play with Sheppard, your character will look nowhere near as good.

That just looks all kinds of wrong to me.

Western? Shit at least they don't look like humans with different names! If you catch my drift.

Almost finished with the book, can't wait for this one. I hope MS does give this the kind of backing they gave Gears, although I have no fear in it's ability to sell, even in light of all the hits coming this holiday season.

It gets even worse. If the game follows the novel (I know, I know - I was bored) there's very little difference between the several races. There's a chapter where the main character has to infiltrate an alien factory. This "alien" factory is protected by a wire fence and patrolling guards. Once inside, the main character notices he's in the "employee locker room" - where he proceeds to steal overalls from a laundry basket to sneak inside the rest of the factory.

Aliens indeed. Ugh.

it's a purely personal thing, but i like my aliens to be, y'know, aliens, not furries and scalies and whatever anthropomorphic what-have-yous. i like the sense of radically different alternate cultures and histories and things that may be fundamentally unknowable to human intelligence. i blame frank herbert for making me think this way!

There was humans working in that factory IIRC.

Master of Orion III had some pretty neat non-anthropomorphic alien designs. Unfortunately the game is wretched.

I like them to be a bit diffrent as well. They should throw in some appendages that we dont have or have them move in a different manner. Star Wars is much closer to what I want in terms of aliens.
