Mass Effect Reveal Trailer - The Game Awards 2020

I thought the original Mass Effect was better but I actually don't really dislike Mass Effect 2. They're both good, in my opinion.

Mass Effect 2 had better character models & animation on the 360 than Mass Effect 3. I remember at the time thinking the third game had been made "cheaply" compared to the second.

As for the new Mass Effect, those who say Bioware haven't earned the right for a teaser years before reveal are correct. Everything they've made & done for 10 years has ranged from suspect to bad, and with Casey Hudson leaving (Mass Effect was his baby; whatever people think), there's just too many questions stopping me from getting hyped.

I haven't even seen footage of the Mass Effect Legendary remaster trilogy yet. So come on Bioware, i.e. one step at a time. First you need to sell me the Legendary edition, then you can build some hype for the next-gen sequel.

You should listen. Later there was a chatter about Andromeda etc, events that happened after First Contact. And look at destroyed relay and dead reaper.
The radio chatter goes over the history of space travel from a human point of view, from fiction like War of the Worlds, to our current accomplishments, to the fiction of the Mass Effect games. First contact war will not be the basis of the next game.

Fair enough. I missed the reapers.

That's good news then.

I know Anthem and Andromeda were considered bad, but I never played them, though even reading up and watching user reviews for the game I can understand people being extremely cautious of anything new BioWare reveals. At the very least they appear to be giving the series a proper sequel by following up on the end to Mass Effect 3. And it being developed by a veteran team instead of the newer team behind Andromeda is somewhat reassuring... but we will see. Maybe at next year's Summer Game Fest we will see gameplay.

In a recent string of tweets, Gamble revealed a few Mass Effect veterans returning for the new game, including Dusty Everman, Parish Ley, Brenon Holmes, and Derek Watts.

If some of these names don't sound familiar, here's a quick breakdown of who is who:

  • Derek Watts
    • Watts is the original Art Director for the Mass Effect series
  • Brenon Holmes
    • Holmes has worked on the entire Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age Inquisition and Origins, Andromeda, and more dating all the way back to Baldur's Gate II. He's a lifelong BioWare staple and intimately familiar with all of the evolutions this studio has undergone
  • Parish Ley
    • Ley was the cinematic direct for the Mass Effect trilogy and he is returning to BioWare and the series specifically to bring back his vision for the new game
    • Gamble also notes that he was the mastermind behind many key moments that Mass Effect fans love
  • Dusty Everman
    • Everman was a key person when it came to bringing the vision of the original Normandy to life in the first Mass Effect game
    • He left BioWare back in 2015, like Ley, but is returning to add his talents to the new Mass Effect game

I was worried when Casey Hudson left recently, but with Gamble and Watts on board, I think we have a chance. And Hudson definitely had a role in fucking up the ending of 3 so he's not necessarily all good news when it comes to his past involvement regardless.

That's great news! Seems like it may be a while before we see any gameplay but it sounds like they have real talent behind this.

I disagree with him about the MEA combat. it always felt too light to me, like everything that was doing had no physical impact to it. I never felt the heaviness of the weapons or was impressed the way my abilities or shot would hit the enemy I was downing. Not floaty, just not there either.

Totally agreed.

One thing Bioware did in ME3 that I liked was when you miss an upgrade in a level that has no point of return, no possibility to go back to pick it up, a vendor would sell that item to you after the mission is over.
The game promotes exploration in the level. If you miss it and cannot go back to that level due to story reasons then a vendor would sell that item. The only penalty is that you have to pay the credits. This softens the regret factor in players. Most players that miss an important upgrade would feel terrible, this is a good penalty system.

Most games like Dragon Age 2 and Alan Wake had collectibles where you would have to get it all in one run, miss it and you are SOL, you would have to basically play with a guide all the way through, and that is bad game design, especially for players who want to go in the game blind. No one wants to play a game with a guide in tow, it devalues the experience going through the game the first time. Players would be distracted by the guide and spoiled. Players don't have time for a second playthrough and missing out on content is not encouraging. Second playthroughs should be made to explore exclusive endings and pathways and possibilities where the narrative can go with exclusive path items.

Also, I fucking hate planet scanning, felt too much of artificial fluff than actually learning about the planet that you would never step on.
