If they hadn't completely dropped the ball and had a digital subscription service like Marvel, then you could actually afford to check out all these old stories.

Yeah, I can't help but feel not having a digital solution hurts them.
I also get the feeling DC are much more heavily writing for trades rather than writing for singles, which also can't help monthly sales

Further leaked Rebirth alterations:

-Selina Kyle is shockingly revealed to be Bruce Wayne's half sister.

-Harley Quinn discovers that she is in fact a ten billion year old celestial goddess suffering from amnesia, once charged with bringing peace and love to all mankind.

Honestly this shit is crazy. Love DC or hate DC, they don't give a fuck and I never would have expected this at all.

Really excited for Rebirth if only because seeing the internet explode like this is so wonderfully entertaining

I like how Green Arrow and Black Canary are soul mates destined to be together in the comics and then you look at the tv series.

Is it sad that only Renee one seems like a stretch?

how so?

I mean, I get that there has been some grim scenes or violence in some of Johns' work. But that doesn't exactly negate the point, nor IMO is it correct to act as though a lot of those values he talks about aren't ever present in his work.

Some?

SOME?!

The guy has been the leading guy of it at DC for the most part. Remember when he brought back Alexander Luthor and Superboy from Crisis who had been heroes? And made them into villains? And then had Superboy ripping off limps, bisecting people in two with his heat vision and punching heads off? How about the earlier picture I posted of his where he had a humanoid shark coming out of the water with the head and leg of a woman's boyfriend in his mouth. And that was just a random thing he put in for giggles.

How about Blackest Night where all who once died are zombies, that's always fun, how about a mother BBQ her dead child saying she never wanted kids. Or have a pair of beloved characters like Ralph and his wife Sue come back as zombies and then proceed to murder the shit out of Hawkgirl and Hawkman along with a game of "Oh hey got your heart, literally!".

In the end the guy does death, tragedy and slaughtering as if it was going out in style.

He talks a nice game about hope and optimism but his work sure hasn't read as it in the last decade.

On top of loving him some dismemberment, he is also a big fan of giving characters daddy issues they never had before.

He does tend to make his characters pretty emo about things along with have a tragic background. I was almost glad when Superboy died for a time due to how Johns was obsessed over the whole Luthor DNA thing being part of Superboy so of course the character had to be acting like a dick and fretting about it twenty four seven. When finally Superboy is brought back(After DC was able to secure the trademark) Johns went back to it.

He would not give it a break.

This is terrifyingly plausible.

I could see Dan Didio signing off on every one of these except for Renee. Even then, that's only because I'm not entirely sure who has the rights to Popeye.

yes, some. and there have been a lot of the values that interview talks about in his work as well.

they are not mutually exclusive. nor does it disqualify a writer from being able to shift focus, nor does it mean they are unable.

I hate how neither DC nor Marvel have the balls to do a full reboot of their comics. Ultimate Marvel was its own universe (which they eventually fucked up so bad they folded it into the main one or something) and even New 52 treated a lot of past shit as canon despite its main goal being drawing in new readers with fresh continuity.

Considering how low comic sales are right now what more do they have to lose? Why can't either company go all the way and start from scratch?

And on the subject of these plot lines, wow, just wow. Can't wait for them to eventually make a story where Joker is Batman's Father/Son/Uncle/Long Lost Twin. Hell, Joker was already Bruce's mom FFS.
Rebooting is the WRONG way to handle legacy stories/characters.

They should let the old characters 1) get old, 2) have families (if it fits them) 3) retire happy while the new generation takes over. Let old fans have their send off while letting new fans have their time.

I'll let bigger Wally fans address this one, but they brought him back without any of his Post-Crisis development. Is that supposed to help anyone?

I forgot what series it was, but she went to a women's shelter run by Amazons and got real powers.

eh

Blame that on the laughably absent chemistry between the two actors.

Amell has a ridiculous amount of chemistry with Rikards, Willa Holland and Susanna Thompson.

Seeing as two of those play characters who were supposed to be his related to him...

Yep. If Katie Cassidy hadn't been so trash there never would have been a problem.

I thought these were real and was totally cool with them.

I honestly think Amell/Oliver was the one with the problem in that relationship. Dude came off as creepy and obsessed before those feelings magically disappeared.

Barbara is a lame batgirl. She was a much better character as Oracle.

She was/is a genuinely good Batgirl, she just makes an infinitely more compelling adult superhero than she does a younger superhero.

If not Oracle, than Barbara should have long since moved on to be Batwoman(!) or equivalent.

The fact that her current writers are tripling down on what the nu52 did is very annoying.

Even more annoying is the fact that strictly speaking, these stories are actually fairly good.

It is both of them, but yeah, Amell probably deserves a bit more blame than she does.

How did Loitz and Amell gel? Currently drawing a blank.

Reasonably well.

It's tough to say what does and doesn't fall on Amell's shoulders, tbh. You can see he's perfectly capable of damn solid acting, expressive stuff, but Oliver is just such a stiff character. Really kind of a question of the material.

In the beginning, they were probably trying to write him as someone who hadn't had any social interaction for five years.

The problem with that is having Black Canary as regular on GA comics is terrible and kills the Green Arrow as character. At most she should just drop in from time to time, but her being permanent part of GA comics is utterly terrible idea.

Some day some hack writer is going to take Stargirl, decide she's too boring and needs some edge and have her gang raped by The Royal Flush Gang or something.
Then Geoff Johns might get what the complaints were about.

Doubtful, something like that would cause an uproar.

Lotz is amazing and her and Amell were good, but Olicity fans run rampant on social media and are loud.
Same with Lara.
Should have definitely been Felicity that got offed and not Lara.

Just because he's in his Kid Flash outfit doesn't mean he doesn't have his memories of being The Flash. I don't think Kid Flash era Wally would call Batman "Bruce"

First interview I've seen with Johns on this. Here's his take/spin/whatever you want to call it on the Watchmen twist, for what it's worth.

Personally, I find this rationale thoroughly unconvincing; if his intent was not to criticize Watchmen itself, but rather just subsequent creators misinterpreting Watchmen as an "instruction manual," then that intent is hopelessly muddled by the decision to cast an actual character from Watchmen as the villain. But I guess more subtle and well-thought-out metacommentary wouldn't have had the same headline-grabbing shock value.

Exactly.

If anything, by making Watchmen canon they themselves have misunderstood a huge part of what made it work in the first place: it's self-contained nature. Everything you need to understand the story and subtext is within the book. By making it part of established DC canon, they're kind of undermining both its fundamental critique of the genre and it's basic premise: the world it created is meant to be our own (in the 80s) had superheroes existed.

They could've made their grand meta-critique of its impact without making it canon. In fact, it's a little late to be making such a grand statement anyway as there are already plenty that do just that, not least of all last year's (?) phenomenal Pax Americana (which provided them with a perfect substitute character).

But yeah, gotta get those headlines. This isn't the first time Johns has riffed off of Moore's scraps either, is it?
