Max Payne 3: First Trailer-September 14th [Out Now]

Soooo, wtf happened to the whole film-noir style?

Max Payne 1 and 2 had such great atmosphere because of this style. Even though the game was in color (unlike the famous noir movies of the 40's) it was, for the most part, a game based around neutral colors. Not only that but the predominantly evening setting of the game really helped this as well. Throw in some really off the wall New England accents and an absolutely amazing script and storyboard, and you get one of the best games to ever grace the industry.

This new game (from what we have seen) has none of that.

not impressed by the trailer.
then again, we need some raw gameplay footage to really judge the game. a playable demo would be even better.

As a pretty big MP fan I think thats mostly rose tinted glasses talking. Those games were pretty limited, and had some truly awful moments. This trailer looks a ton more interesting than yet another noir rehash.

They were good and I liked them, but they were just upper-tier action games.

I don't know if anyones mentioned in this thread, but I'm not gonna read 5+ pages of bitching after reading the first couple.

But anyone notice it says "Rockstar Games Presents a Rockstar Studios Production"? Remember the trademark Take2 registered eariler this year? Weird it says that and not "Rockstar Vancouver".

Exactly, we've now literally seen one minute of in game footage, hardly enough to go and claim they've up and abandoned the noir style completely. They probably wanted to establish, primarily, that this is a new local and that Max is in a completely different situation. That said, they first two were drenched in so much melodrama it was almost comical, so if they've pulled back on that a tad I won't complain.

Besides, haven't we seen screenshots of Max in what people assume are "flashback" sequences, which definitely contain the old games' noir flavor?

I wish this dumb disingenuous "you'll all buy it on the first day anyway" argument would go away, but it's become so entrenched that it'll stick around forever. :(
I'll give you an even better argument: "if you don't like, just don't play it"
hah!

But seriously that trailer looks awesome, and since the game is from Rockstar i'm setting my hopes high for a good story.

Notice how I actually never mentioned the gameplay? The gameplay was decent/good at it's best. Wonky controls, falling off of buildings in most places, gun play that often required 5x more bullets than one would need against you. The story, the setting, the style, is what made the game. I absolutely love the dialogue, and in my opinion is the best of the best in terms of writing in games.

There are some things that shouldn't be changed. Like the fricking MOOD of a Max Payne game. This seriously pisses me off. I don't care how old and fat he supposedly has become, that main character doesn't even look like Max Payne.
And frankly, can you imagine how epic it would be to play an older, fatter version of Max Payne (think Stallone in Copland) in an awesome, wintery Noire setting? The thought of this missed opportunity brings me to tears.

Needless to say I'll stay away from this abomination that calls itself a "Max Payne" game.

So did the guy in Max Payne 2.

Changing "actors" is somewhat part of the series.

Yep.

But who cares about that? New York only! Remedy! Fuck you, Rockstar! Dudebro?!? Rah!!

Max Payne 3 Infos... Fans react with "Bruce Willis""Looks like shit" "This doesnt look like MP"
Months nothing... (Probably deleting something or changing something)
New Pictures... "Looks like New York" "Yeah Bruce Willis isnt there anymore" "Finally they give us what we wanted. And no brazil anymore"
New Infos... "Sounds cool"
Trailer... "The fuck is that? Where is Max Payne?" "This isnt Max Payne" "Doesnt sound like Max Payne" "Fuck the haters its R* so im gonna buy the product because its R* and R* is the best and does everything right because they are R*" "Looks great to me"

Never saw someone messing more with the fans then R* with the MP fans. What a fanservice... would love to see that with Activision and COD.

Just watched it. This is not my Max Payne. Again, no noir, no sale.
I'm also saddened to hear that amazing piece of music outside of Max Payne 2. The music is both the best and the worst part of that trailer.

I'll admit I miss the Noir style, but i'll also admit I miss Bullet-Time gameplay even more. So...Day One..

EDIT: Maybe? I'm not too excited about this game having multiplayer. I'm really hoping for a LENGTHY singleplayer with tons of replay value =/

I went into this trailer completely open to having Rockstar's trailer wizards convince me that bald heads, wifebeaters, San Paolo and beards were what this franchise needed, but then they slugged me in the face right away with the brilliant, dark, moody Max Payne theme so grossly out of tune with the imagery it made me cringe in despair.

This is so tonally out of whack that any remnants of what Max Payne was is nothing but a cruel reminder.

The rest of it is little to speak of. We get to see somewhat sympathetic and Max Payney looking Max Payne so that the transformation into bald slob Payne is even more heartbreaking, and then there's some GTA stuff interrupted by a slow motion bullet as if to twist the knife a couple of more rounds in your chest. Then it finally unceremoniously ends on a few Max Payne theme chords sloppily plastered over another dusty, hazy, generic shot void of anything even remotely evocative.

I'm usually open and enthusiastic and positive about change. I'm still excited about Hitman Absolution, I thought Splinter Cell Conviction was a great after loving the bits off of the franchise prior all the way up to DA on Xbox, and Syndicate? Pretty much there! This though, just bums me the hell out.
This great post sums up my feelings better than I could have.

I'm not writing the game off completely -- R* deserves a shot with whatever they're trying to do with this re-boot -- but everything released so far has been incredibly underwhelming. It's devoid of any coherent identity. BF3-esque digital title distortions? Tonally incoherent music cues? Sloppy, awkward writing? Boring action shots in my Max Payne?! This has to be the worst trailer R* has ever put out.

Is this the result of troubled development, or what?

Well, you are aware that they switched models and how he looked between the first two games. You are aware of this, right?

I would argue that stuff is even worse than the pulp trash its trying to emulate. I mean, in 2001 or whatever it was definitely gripping and unique, but its not like it was actually good.
IDK, just a matter of taste. I for one am actually pretty excited about the new tone, I will follow Max Payne as he continues his journey through the night.
Remember the MP2 instruction manual

Developer doesn't change anything, people complain
Developer changes things, people complain
And that's why you never listen to the internet.

Incidentally, I find it hard to take people talking about new Max's design looking bad seriously when...

Ah yes, that Remedy facial quality, combined with that most generic of generic game characters, the brown haired white dude with little-to-no facial hair

Gameplay wise I'm sure it'll be fine. Max Payne had a pretty simple formula that I'm sure a big studio like this couldn't screw up.

Writing wise, I'm not gonna pretend the first two games were masterpieces of the genre, but they were pretty decent pulpy fun for games and I haven't liked anything written by Rockstar. This game will probably be about as noir as La Noire, which is to say it'll be about as much of a western as Red Dead, which is to say it emulates the window dressing well enough and not much else.

They did a much better job with MP2.

Apples to apples, MP2 changed a lot of things, but it was clearly a Max Payne game.
Also - MP looked good in 2001.

I do think this will come off as "a Max Payne" game. The music and voice over was perfect, and a lot of those environments seemed very appropriate. It was during the day and there was a lot more color, but definitely definitely 100% underground scum of the city vibe. I always liked Max Payne because it was sorta like a look behind the curtain at the horrifying underground of this huge amazing city. This seems to be that but amped up to 11.

The music was lifted from Max Payne 2. Amazing piece of music, which absolutely does not fit the tone of this Max Payne 3 trailer.

What a miserable usage of the classic Max Payne theme.... Guess they used it for the trailer in order to show people that this is Max Payne - because besides from that this trailer has nothing to do with Max Payne.

What a waste...

Hm, don't remember that. I don't know I think this kinda feels like a bit like the recent Miami Vice movie a touch. I thought the music went pretty well with it, for some reason I'm imagining the colorful club sequences and brazilian sunset to sorta be an exclamation point to how dark the game actually will be. I can't really put it into words, but there is kind of a nice little contrast between the kinda paradise color palette and how fucked up the game is sure to be.

You guys are ridiculous. This looks faithful, gorgeous, and still very noir. The writing is going to be better than Remedy, no one can deny that (he can NOT write worth a damn), and Rockstar knows noir better than Remedy and anyone else in the game industry. They're just a big company of art and entertainment nerds.

But hey, I'm biased. I don't like this new direction at all.

My thoughts exactly. Especially compared to the likely flashback sections from before Max goes to Brazil. Could be really cool.

I guess you missed the part with the over-the-top narration, bullet time, sideways dodge and bullet cam then.

Are you basing this on LA Noire?
