Max Payne Replay Thread - Journey through the night once more

Welp. Guess I deserve what I get.

Decided to play the iPad version for a laugh. Aside from being the single worst way to play Max Payne that I can think of, it's not that bad for a distilled reminder of what the game is. It kinda turns the combat from challenging into power fantasy, but I think I'm okay with that.

I agree, due to the auto aim I enjoy just diving through unlocked doors and windows shooting my guns in slow motion.

First game is a lot more difficult than I remember. We've been so spoiled by games today, not used to starting a level over when I die.

Quicksave is on F5, Quickload is on F9. Quickly adopt the habit of hitting F5 after you clear any given room of enemies and you'll be fine.

The Max Payne iPad re-release put me right in nostalgia mode; before I knew it, I was trying to get the PC originals back up running.
To my great delight, both of them work rather well in OSX via Wine!

So, I thought I'd share these icons I created for Max Payne 1 & 2.
They're both Lion-ready, with dedicated art for every standard icon size (512x512 all the way to 16x16).
The case artwork is a modification of a design by Dustin Schau.

This is how I play my Max Payne. Not my games can let you turn whatever you want with it, into something like this. ^^

1 or 2? 1, I agree, but I still think 2 is straight up one of the best games ever made.

#2 (on PC). Yea I absolutely loved it back in the day and was definitely one of the best. I'm just surprised how aged it looks now... The gameplay, cinematics, animation ect are all so simple.

I've always wondered why that hospital had armed security guards plus lockers with shotguns and ammo.

I would really like to know what kind of features they will use on MP3 for supplies excluding the ammo & weapons from dead bodies. I loved and still do on both games, to search for hidden supplies after I killed everybody on that spot. I hope on Max Payne 3 they will still keep this system.

Best part is the quicksave's actually go into two alternating slots. And this still isn't a feature it most games these days ... :|

Man that really saved my ass once in MP1 when I accidentally hit quicksave just as a guy snuck up behind me and tagged the back of my head with a shotgun. :P

Just finished the first for the first time. I never played any of the games.

Liked it enough to keep playing. It gets kind of repetitive but the gunplay is gratifying enough to counteract that. Loved the comic storyboard and film noir dialog.

aaaaand I'm done with MP1

as in, I could not play the fucking thing anymore!

Got as far as Part2 and just had enough of the constant perfect enemies/insta death + F5/F9 formula

I remember beating it when it came out and even back then I remember hating that shit so damn much.
Mechanically MP1 is just too outdated for me to stomach anymore ....then again, I kinda always felt MP1 was more of a awesome game to look at and listen to rather than actually play.
Sam Lake's writing is still top notch.

So yeah, I'm just movin' on to MP2

Haha.

One thing I'm wondering (still going through the first game) is why all these big time criminals love writing letters so much. Especially ones that include exhaustive details on their criminal activities that they don't even end up mailing and just leave lying around everywhere.

I... I had no idea.

Anywho, I'm done with MP1 and now deep into Act 2 of MP2. I'm loving every minute.

Played this series back when they had just came to ps2. But since the 3rd is right around the corner I bought the PC versions from amazon for about 3$ each.

Yes, YESSS!!!. Anyone seeking a mini-mod that enhances the vanilla experience of MP2, should try the Stopmotion Mod. This mod makes the ragdoll physics a tad better, tweaks the bullet time a bit and makes the bloodpuffs on the bad guys a bit bigger. That's it. It DOESN'T have ridiculous main character animations, bullet time music nor does it extend Max's coat, so that he looks like Neo with a coat made out of iron.

Get this mod!

This is...interesting.

I liked the Cinema mod purely for the weapons it added. A fucking minigun, man. Plus I thoroughly enjoyed going into Bullet Time and one-shotting people through the face with the revolver. Gave it a little of that Dirty Harry flavor. :p

How do you access the other weapons in Cinema? I had the anaconda but I didn't see anything else.

Max Payne 1 complete. Still a really great game. Debating on playing the 2nd with first person mod... Pumped to replay Max Payne 2 since I remember thinking it was drastically better than 1.

I'm planning on starting Max 2 this weekend on the pc. I can't remember, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but this game doesn't have analog movement? Max is either standing still or running at all times, right?

I was playing MP1 last night for a little bit in 3D. It had a lot of problems with shadows and objects in the background not displaying right, but still....was pretty sweet running in a room in bullet time and seeing bullets fly over Max's shoulders. Going to try out MP2 in 3D when I play replay through the first one.

Not really into 3D gaming, but I am very interested to see if MP3 turns out alright with it.

Finished MP2. Was tremendously better than MP1.
That line at the end was pretty great:
I had a dream of my wife. She was dead. But it's all right.

A screenshot of this when I played it for my first time in February. What an immensely satisfying game both gameplay and story wise.

One moment I loved...

At the construction site while Mona is covering Max

Mona: Okay, action. Ready, get set, go!

Max: And he's off.

Mona: The crowd goes wild.

The delivery is great, it's a lovely moment, they're almost flirting there. It's a nice, real moment. A lot of the time, Max is so morose, so I dug that little bit of levity.

I'm nearing the end of Chapter 2 in Max Payne and I'm not sure I can stomach finishing it. Tempted to quit and play Max Payne 2 instead, hoping that age has been kinder to the sequel than it was to the original.

Just don't man. Don't force yourself. Move on to MP2 and, you know, remember games are for enjoyment, not work.

Two holds up sooo much better. The improvements were huge at the time, and graphically it still looks very, very good. Plus it has a boatload of better mods to mess around with. If you want to recap the story from 1, check out the graphic novel scenes on Youtube.

No shame in jumping to Max Payne 2. There's a 'Previously On' feature in MP2 as well so you can refresh yourself with the story anyway.

I played about 3 hours of the original Max Payne and quit. I can see why people liked it when it came out but I have to many issues with it.

hate for mp1 itt makes me a sad panda. the game was actually pretty far ahead of it's time with the revolving save slots and the slightly rebounding health meter. you never get stuck in an unwinnable situation because a single graze will kill you and you're out of painkillers.

i played through it twice in a row this past week. so much fun :)
