McDonald's to get Makeover - Plasma TV's, Couches, Internet Access

this is old people. My local MacDonalds have been like this for several months. The food is unchanged and the supposed internet access is limited due to children going on porn sites and leaving them up...

McStarbucks? It's the end of the world as we know it... I see what they're trying to do, but to pull this off, they'd have to change the menu and undergo a massive marketing campaign to show the cleaned up image. Also, if people stay and hang out and a customer can't find a seat, then this place fails.

Only thing I really like at McDonalds are those cheap spicey chicken sandwiches and like a hot fudge sundae. I could care less how many plasma screen TVs they put up and I have no desire to surf my porn near the kiddy playpen.

Speaking for myself, the Canadian McDonalds have already gone through a makeover in the last two years. Looking at the pictures it's a different image (more "chalet lodge"), but it's the same fireplaces, wifi, couches deal.

I'm sure they must have tried it out on some McDonalds already to see how the concept worked. Now they're applying it to all 13,000 franchises.

So McDonald'S USA is taking some notes from McDonald's France? lol.. Yeah in Paris you have hot spots in every McDo, you have Plasma TVs in all of them, leather couchs in prety much all of them... Guess it was bound to happen ;)

There is no way in hell this is going to fly where I live. The kids who work at MD's will have their friends hanging out and theres no way they can keep that furniture clean.

Same goes for the Netherlands. WiFi hotspots from T-Mobile and Plasma TV's everywhere (ususally just displaying local mall/city adverts).

No couches and fireplaces yet though.

Oh yes, I want to be seen at McDonalds

On paper this sounds nice. But in practice, it'll be pretty shitty. I can already see the smelly couches, smeared TVs, and grubby floors.

This fancier new look sounds like what McDonalds has been looking like throughout East Europe for many years now (yes, East Europe, of all places, probably the rest of the Europe too). You wouldn't believe how much fancier the McD restaurants look there compared to these grubby ones here in the US and Canada. Sure enough, that fancier look has attracted a LOT more teenagers to go there and hang inside than what I see here, but those restaurants looked pretty fancy to begin with - I don't know if they will have the same effects here after the makeover, seeing how crappy they were looking for so many years.

Hmm, maybe in bigger cities, but on south of Canada, I have yet to see one such redesigned McDonalds.

The fact that classing up the place a little bit is seen by most as some desperate deviation from the norm is a little sad.

Fast food places with cracked plastic seats bolted to the floor and sickeningly bland decor are not something anyone should lament the loss of.

Western Canada anyway... seen em in Edmonton, Calgary, Prince George, Victoria.....

There's been one like this in northern virginia since before last xmas. The redesign came with the wi-fi and the gamecube kiosks.

I'm no fan of this company, but this would be a good move. Living in a busy urban like London places like Starbucks that offer up a brief few moments of comfort and relaxation, however artificial and contrived, are always welcome. Their internation corporate identity somehow also makes it more welcoming for loners/tourists who would feel weird sitting in a bar on their own.

Same here, except for couches, in Brazil.

This isn't going to go well in my area, I can already imagine how many "the local McDonalds was broken into last night..." headlines appear on the news.

It's been this way for a while in a few of them here in LA. Some of them have plasma tvs you can play videogames on. It feels awkward, though. I haven't been to McDonald's in 3 years and this hasn't and won't be drawing me in any time soon.

McDonalds food is horribly generic tasting, the only thing they have going for them is speed of service.

If I only have a few moments to spare to eat on the run, unfortunately I'll choose McDonalds because all of food chains have either speed issues (Ex:Burger King) or happen to be way too greasy (Ex:Jack On the Box)

Mcdonal;ds USA should do what Mcdonalds international does.

Divide the store in half. Half gets the traditional mcdonalds, the other half gets the McCafé, with design and style.

Heres a picture I took in a mall foodcourt. The rest of the mcdonalds is to the left, but that picture came out badly

If McDonald's wants to attract young professionals they should start by raising their prices.
Hmmm, that's actually a good point. Again, in East Europe, McD is one of the more expensive fast food restaurants, at least compared to other local burger joints. Combine that with fancier look I mentioned, and lo and behold, a lot more normal looking people go there, and a whole lot less hobos and obviously poor retired ones.

This seems like such a dumb idea. After spending some time around my nephew and similar age cousin this summer it's disgusting how well McDonald's has ingrained itself into children.

McCafé.

It's funny how "McWhatever" is McDonald's brand identity, and it only makes sense for them to extend that to things like McCafé, yet at the same time it's also slang for anything generic, bland, and mediocre.

Holy crap, you serve shitty ass fast food. It's barely even good. What is with this pimping? Just dish out my crap and let me go one with my day. Seriously...

Just curious, but when was the last time anyone actually went into a McDonalds and sat down and ate there? I avoid fast food as a general rule, but it's sometimes a necessity when traveling. I can't even imagine going in and sitting there and eating.

While I totally agree, when was the last time you went into a dine-in McDonalds that was empty? Seems like every one I've ever been to has people sitting inside.

They built a new McDonalds (about a year ago) by my apartment and it's sort of half-and-half like these new ones and the old ones. It still has old style tables, chairs, booths, etc. but it also has paintings on the walls, plants, a plasma TV and wifi.

I live in norway though. And I always though we got shit so much later than anyone else. Like the cheeseburger, oh my! everytime someone went abroad and ate at a macdonalds, they'd always bring the scoop of the stuff to come. Ahh, ye olde memories....

Broomfield, Colorado (Just North of Dever) has had two locations like this for a while now. It doesn't make the food any better, but the restaurants are a lot more pleasant to be at now. In fact, the look is the only thing that makes the places tolerable for me. To the people who are complaining about this, I really don't see why it's a a bad idea. The restaurants look nicer, smell better, and are a lot more clean.

The thing that's stupid in my mind is how they've outsourced the guys who take your order at the drive-thru. That seems pointless to me.

Fix the food first, thx? Jesus christ, I tend to go to Wendy's and occasionally Burger King, but I couldn't believe how terrible the burgers tasted and McDonalds. Was revolting!

The McDonalds around the corner from me has made this change already. Hell, they even have poetry night on Friday's. I do have to say it makes my Saturday Morning ritual of having breakfast with my daughters there a lot nicer.

Now give me food that doesn't taste like absolute shit and we have a deal.
:lol Exactly, as has been said numerous times. For the amount of money this bullshit company spends on marketing and "style", you think they could make the food taste decent for a reasonable price.

Sigh. I know, I know. They do it because it sells.

mcdonalds canada just did massive renovations in the last couple years , shifting from the traditional interior to a rustic log cabin look, the place is darker lighting wise as well. This last change happened when they started offering those mcdonalds toasted deli subs.

I can't see them changing agian .. atleast not the local mcdicks.

Thats only a small number of stores in the northwest, and the call centers are in North Dakota, so no american jobs are lost

Holy shit that's nice. I would love to sit in that McDonalds. Those should only be in upper to middle class areas though, because the I can see others not respecting this lovely look.

I'm all for the change. Hopefully this will prompt other chains to at least take a look at redesigning their interiors. I'm really tired of uncomfortable 'get in, get your product and get out' philosophies of nearly everything around my area. It's not only food, but just about every store seems to have that 'rush the consumer' philosophy. I'm pretty certain that if people are able to get more comfortable, they may be a little more willing to spend their money.

After they get this infrastructure in change, they definitely need to add some items to their menu, namely healthier foods, that fit this. I'm 100% for the move away from the minimalist, drab interiors that plague most chains. I'm for a more relaxed atmosphere and improving the 'consumer experience.'
