Sinobi has edited the message
it should be around 100k NDS sold, not 200k
200k is a mistake

so 91000 units sold are correct <---- I mean possible

:(

What you should not forget in Sony's business model is that people who buy a PSP as a portable media player also buy a large memory stick. And guess what they'll buy when they want a new camera or camescope? A Memory stick compatible device = a Sony one. I know this strategy worked on me as I chose a Sony camera over a Canon one for this reason . So maybe Sony can take a bigger loss on the PSP after all, as we don't see the whole picture.

You might be onto something...

Anyway:

hardware numbers
Jan2 ~ Jan8
http://game10.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/ghard/1136987570/

PSP 132000
DS 91000
PS2 80000
360 7000

+

Monster Hunter Portable climbing up and passing the 300k mark (and outselling PS2 Monster Hunters and most of GC/PS2 REs in the process)

This thread has taken a turn for the worse for the big N. PSP momentum in Japan, Sony making profits on the PSP, media player goodness for the PSP, the software situation being not that bad after all.

BAIL OUT!!

I think that you must stop to think like a Sonyfan and say shit like that.

"The Software situation being not that bad afer all".

So what is "bad" for you ?

-->Sony isn't making profits at all on the Hardware sales.
-->Software sales are ridicoulous in Japan.
-->I don't see a single million-seller in 2006.
-->UMD aren't selling well in Japan. (the situation is very different in USA & Europe, but
NOT in Japan).

Its time to recognise that the DS is a very successfull machine, on the Hardware side, AND on the Software side, and is NOT a supply problem that will change things.

Sony must absolutely support the machine with more games. In particular, the PSP hasn't still a true blockbuster in Japan.

These are the facts !!!

Easter is officially on hold. Well, until more shipments make their way into Japan.

I would be shocked if Sony is still losing money on PSP hardware. Maybe on the core pack, but this is long gone. The value pack is the only thing that in Japan and has been for months now.

It seems, if we trust Gamesindustry, that the shortages are due also to the fact, that a redesigned Nintendo DS is on the way.

So, Nintendo must produces the Nintendo DS & The Nintendo DS v.2 and probably is one to the production's problems that Nintendo have.

Result: Nintendo DS's sales are very low.

I still hope that Sonyfans will remain quiets.....

EDIT: grammaticals corrections.

I don't believe that the redesign news is coming so soon. I would expect that E3 would be the first we'd hear about it, but who knows...

The shortage is due to the fact that Nintendo has been selling an insane amount of systems as of late. However, people like Izzy can't quite grasp that concept; he just believes that more people wanted PSPs this week, despite the fact that the DS owns 8 out of the 10 top software spots.

I could see them pushing for a redesigned release sooner now that inventory is low but the reason for the shortages is probably that the platform saw unpreceeded sales.

Humm.. It seems people are buying software while waiting for their DS or something. ~1 million software sold but only ~100k hardware. It's like the X360 launch in NA.

Possible release of new DS by end of January perhaps? If these rumors are true.

There will not be a redesign in January. That would piss off 1.5 million customers that just got the old version last month.

I think they said something like - (to paraphrase) stock will be replenished towards the end of January.

I don't know why they would bring out a new model when the current design is selling at a record pace. As soon as sales begin to dip, that's the best time to release the redesign (and drop the price of the current model).

They could take us by surprise and release a new design. Why? Because DS has momentum, and because it is now sure to be a sound investment. Nintendo went low profile with the DS, talking about "third pillar", almost making damage control when they launched it, when everybody thought it would be crunched by the PSP. My guess is they created the cheapest design they could do, to limit losses in case of failure. Now the DS is successful, they have the opportunity to release a better version of their console, more stylish to appeal to geeks and to the PSP crowd. They won't make as much profit on it as on the 1st version, but they can afford it now they know their bet was right, now they can predict other million sellers in 2006.

Chances of happening: 30%.
