Media Create Sales 4/7 - 4/13

I don't believe that the DS Lite or the Wii will EVER have a true price cut.

The momentum that keeps a product selling over the course of years is at least partially maintained by price cuts. The alternative to eventually cutting price and picking up the consumers who would only buy a lower price is to launch an entirely new product at the same price -- which is much more viable for something like an iPod (which will always still be compatible with the MP3s you already have) than with game consoles (where software compatibility -- in both directions -- is extremely important.)

I think it's more viable with the DS, at least, since it's close to something you could consider a "floor" price already, and there's nothing else to potentially put downward pressure on it. But the Wii? The 360 and PS3 will eventually price drop to less than the Wii's price -- you really think Nintendo will continue to sell at exactly the same price once that's happened?

In Europe 360 is already below Wii's price - I don't think we'll see a price cut on Wii anytime soon though. I do agree that we'll definetly see a Wii price cut, just not anytime soon. Regardless of whether the 360 price also drops below the Wii price in the US.

Taiko Drum Master 2 went on sale this week, didn't it? I'll be interested to see its impact on the first game's sales since it's still hanging around the top 30.

No way man, its going to hit 2million sooner or later.

MHP2 was still charting even 10 months after release. MHP2G is in it's first month and is only 300k away from that magic 2million.

Mario Party 8 DS? Isn't that the Wii version?

Anyway, really slow week this week. Deca Sporta at #10 only selling 12k.

Wow! MH has a huge leg. I thought the game will go down very quick after the front-load sale first week. Now the game still sale over 100k in week4. At this point it will surely surpass 2M easily (even before mid-year). Anyone start to think about 2.5 -3 M figure?

Barring first 2 weeks of February 2006 where (fat) DS was sold out, this week DS 37k is the lowest since June 2005.

This week also marks PS3 lowest week ever, beating previous record week by 13 units.

360 number beats just 1 week of all 2007 ones (by 45 units), its lower than all the other weeks that year, and also 2008 lowest.

Also, Bi-Mozi Training last three weeks: 7'2k -> 15k -> 17k

Orochi Musou 2 is still 63k away from hitting the previous game first week numbers.

Wow, Sony and Capcom must be SUPER happy about Monster Hunter. It's also good to see a good PSP title selling well, too.

Nah - GTA 4 will kill gaming here in 'Other' No one will buy or play anything hardcore for a good month or so.

Wii Fit has free reign to sit at number 1 (after the initial GTA spike of a million or so copies in 12 days) or maybe 2 behind Mario Kart. :D

If you average out the weekly drops of MHP2G, it works out to around 44-45% a week since the game launched. Based on that, if drops remain constant (say 44% a week) for the next four weeks, the game should reach 1.9M in another month (and 2M many months after).

If weekly drops slow down to an average of 35% from here on out, MHP2G will be at 1.96M in four weeks, and will break 2M in two months.

Personally, I think the weekly drops will be somewhere in between those two scenarios, with 2M being broken 4-5 Months from now.

EDIT: I forgot about golden week. That will work in monster hunter's favor as far as drops are concerned. However, regardless of whether it takes 2 months or 6 months, MHP2G passing 2M is a pretty safe bet at this point.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Kinda weak hardware numbers for everything except the PSP.

Does anyone have YTD hardware numbers after this week's Famitsu data? PSP looks like a strong candidate for first place in this year's YTD. Even if Wii/DS pull ahead later this year, it should be fairly close.

30. Phoenix Wright 2 (New Best Price 2000) (DS): 3.700 [3.700]
30th place under 4,000? That's really low. Doing a search over my data, the last time I'm sure it happened was the week of 2006-10-09. It did happen quite a few times in 2006, and even more times in 2005 and earlier, but a general sales inflation has kept it from happening recently.

Sony seems to be trying to capture both markets by releasing the PS3 at a higher price and continuing to sell the PS2 at the lower price.

Microsoft seems to be trying to capture both markets by differentiating its product into multiple SKUs (Elite, Arcade, etc.).

Nintendo seems to be pursuing the mass market from the beginning, designing with a price constraint in mind.

IMO, assuming (big assumption) that all 3 companies continue to pursue a similar strategy, Sony will probably follow the traditional price cut model. Microsoft will probably introduce a new console in different SKUs to target different markets, and Nintendo will probably simply introduce a new console at a mass market-friendly price. That means Nintendo may not lower the price of the Wii to sustain sales momentum - they may indeed choose to introduce a new system at the $250 price point.

The "iPod model" combines frequent introductions of next-generation hardware with significant product differentiation within each generation.

Low hardware numbers except PSP. But it's better to wait until the Media Create (edited, thanks to Segata) numbers to see if something changes. What about software, no doubts that MHP2G will reach 2 millions. My estimation in the long term are 2 millions and half (and I'm pessimistic).
What about Mario kart Wii, great second week. Sure it will remain in the top 10 for much time...

Question: what is the next PSP resp. DS significant release in Japan? For DS, don't answer me DQIX please.

The Famitsu early numbers haven't varied from the printed ones yet. Unless you meant M-C, and accidentally typed "official".

I wish they'd bring out a PSP 2000 that wasn't a girl colour or just plain ugly. I mean yeah, piano black and silver are nice, and I guess there's ceramic white, but how about some nice metallic colours for the mens.

Another colour???? How many have still to come out? One for month?

A constant stream of limited edition colors will be the PSP's ticket to 15M LTD in Japan (likely by the end of 2009 at this rate).

Japanese hardware sales will end up within a couple million units of the SNES (17M in Japan) but software sales will continue to fall in the Gamecube range outside of Monster Hunter.

Not a normal new color though.

Its a (limited edition) Value Pack in the same color as the MHP2G PSP (which had some tattoos on the back). Higher priced (23800 vs 19800), the extra comes from a carrying case, strap, 32MB memory stick and a composite(?) cable.

There are also some new official Sony accesories coming up with it.

PSP (Slim) has 7 main colors, so DS (Lite) still wins with 8. PSP has been having lots of LE ones lately though.

Sure they will. At some point, both consoles will be selling 0 units a week :D

Seriously though, I imagine DS sales will go up at the end of the year (as they always do), likely surpassing the PSP in the process.
