Hey guys. Going back and gathering the hardware numbers for the last monthish, there seems to be a slight discrepancy between the two sources I use: what do you have?

For the combined weeks of April 26 - May 2 and May 3 - May 9, Geimin says PS3 is 49,916. However, going by Famitsu's individual weekly images I get 25,952 and 23,958 respectively, which add to 49,910. Granted, Famitsu uses stupid small fonts (why I check Geimin's text listings to begin with), but I don't see which of the regular mixups could account for me ending up 6 too low.

I have found many errors at geimin when copying hw numbers from famitsu magazine. http://www.geocities.jp/v7160c_l5/index.html is a good reference for WII/PS3/360 and DS/PSP hw famitsu. But even that site can't decide which numbers are correct. Famitsu must have given different numbers at the magazine and different at the site. In one month when half year top 100 sw and hw comes out we will know what the correct numbers are.

Japan hates 3D Mario :(

On the bright side of that, it will keep Nintendo making 2D Marios :)

Luckily the West loves 3D Mario so we will keep getting them. I've never been really into 2D Mario (YI isnt a Mario game, its a Yoshi game, which I like more.)

I thought it was interesting two nights ago when I saw this Japanese couple buying a Wii system, an extra remote and NSMB Wii. Said Japanese couple will probably buy Mario Kart Wii within weeks. Hell, they might nab Wii Sports Resort or Wii Fit Plus. I'm not sure they would enjoy playing Galaxy 2 together as much as they would NSMB Wii.

I'm interested to see how a true multiplayer 3D Mario would do in Japan. All Wii million sellers except for Animal Crossing City Folk, the original Galaxy and Wii Fit (Plus) are inherently multiplayer-oriented games.

So apparently the Monster Hunter cat game is getting a bundle: http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/01/monster-hunter-felyne-spinoff-bundled-with-hannah-montana-psp/

It also seems that the new PSP Tales game is coming out on August 5th: http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/01/tales-of-phantasia-narikiri-dungeon-cross-release-date-leaked/

That Tales date would line up with the rumored strategy of having a Summer and a holiday Tales title, but I'm not sure if it's normal for Namco to wait this long to announce a holiday Tales game.

I don't think they change their hardware numbers. LTD and YTD sums from geocities are always what famitsu provides at their Q1-4, HY, FY and CY reports.

Silly Nintendo, should have called it NEW Super Mario Galaxy. Would've sold bajillions.

And damaged that franchises name. New SMB is associated with 2d gameplay. There would be many frustrated people out there if they picked up a New SMB with 3d gameplay.

My sister is actually very good at NSMB Wii, but can't manage to even get the first star in Good Egg Galaxy.

I can see why a lot of people might get confused with the a game like Super Mario Galaxy. Concepts like trying to run up a vertical all or run over an edge to get to the other side are quite counterintuitive.

Galaxy 2 is better since it eases the player in by starting with 2D gameplay. Galaxy's difficulty is from the mind bending perceptions, and not the controls I think. The second game also has more 2D sections overall.

That is quite true.

However, I think the thing that might hurt SMG2 at this point is that many people will think back to their difficulties with Galaxy 1 and not be as inclined to run out and get it, especially after just getting a Mario game they understood a lot better.

True. It kinda says to me that Miyamoto and co. really need to go back to the drawing board and reimagine what it means to be a "3D Mario game" and better incorporate 2D elements in a way that is intuitive to more people. There has never been a "blue ocean" 3D Mario despite the critical acclaim of at least 3 of the 4 titles.

I personally cannot wait to see what Nintendo has in store for a potential solution to this 2D-3D puzzle.

for beginner players, SMG is much more difficult than a 2D mario game. 3D gameplays in intrinsically more complex and difficult.

SMG2 is much harder than 1. No way new gamers can enjoy it without a substantial time investment.

I dunno. 9 million copies seems pretty blue ocean. How many games even beat that total? Maybe 30-40 titles at most I think. Thats extreme mainstream appeal.

Also lol BowieZ. Are you gonna make anymore galaxy fan music?

It's not Blue Ocean by Nintendo standards, in my opinion, anyway. As per Wikipedia:

The 20 best-selling console/handheld games, not originally bundled with a console/handheld system. Cross-platform sales are not counted.

Wii Play (Wii – 27.38 million, Wii remote bundled with all copies)[68]
Nintendogs (DS – 23.26 million, all five versions combined)[68]
Wii Fit (Wii – 22.61 million)[68]
Mario Kart Wii (Wii – 22.55 million)[68]
New Super Mario Bros. (DS – 22.49 million)[68]
Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green (Game Boy – 20.08 million approximately: 10.23 million in Japan,[48] 9.85 million in US)[19]
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! (DS – 18.72 million)[68]
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES – 18 million)[97]
Mario Kart DS (DS – 17.90 million)[68]
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (DS – 17.39 million)[78]
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2 - 17.33 million)[104]
Wii Sports Resort (Wii – 16.14 million)[68]
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2 – 14.89 million shipped)[93]
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii – 14.70 million)[68]
Pokémon Gold and Silver (Game Boy Color – 14.51 million approximately: 7.6 million in US,[19] 6.91 million in Japan)[48]
Super Mario Land (Game Boy – 14 million)[97]
Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day! (DS – 13.71 million)[69]
Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (GBA – 13 million)[77]
Wii Fit Plus (Wii – 12.65 million)[68]
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen (GBA – 11.82 million)[78]

Games that were originally bundled at launch and have sold or shipped at least ten million copies.

Wii Sports (Wii – 63.46 million,[68] packaged with system in all regions except Japan)
Super Mario Bros. (NES – 40.23 million)[43]
Tetris (Game Boy – 35 million)[73]
Super Mario World (SNES – 20 million)[51]

You'd think with such an illustrious history of Mario sales (how many hundreds of millions?), that the big new 3D Mario game on the big new home console -- Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii -- would be near the top. Well, you would have thought this a good 10 or 15 years ago.

So: close to 9 million, barely cracking a million in Japan, is sort of head-scratching, no? It makes me scratch my head at least :p Although, obviously, there are explanations for it, but it's still just a surprise to me, and I don't see how a surprisingly low amount (relatively speaking) especially in Japan can be considered "blue ocean" otherwise that term loses all meaning. "Blue Ocean" to me means neverending sales, just unbelievable popularity that has no barriers in terms of age or gender or ease of access. Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 are full of barriers, Galaxy 2 slightly less so.

And in a few months' time I will have new music up on YouTube, inspired by my Mario game concept: "New Super Mario World" and the image in my avatar ;)

How can you be surprised when we already got sale results for the previous "3D Mario" games and none of them came close to sell 20 million units?

SM64 - 11 million
SMS - 5.5 million
SM64DS - 8.64 million
SMG - 8.8 million
SMG2 - ? ( but I bet a bit less than SMG )

It's very unlikely that a new "3D Mario" ( and for that I mean the peculiar genre ) can vastly outsell the original ( unless it changes the genre ...).

Er... To be "blue ocean", it would have to sell to people who don't normally buy 3D Mario and, most importantly, people who don't normally play games. It has sold more than Sunshine, true, but it also didn't perform as well as Super Mario 64. It also didn't really break the pattern of frontloaded sales, except in a few countries, namely Holland and France. Just selling very good numbers doesn't qualify as being "blue ocean". By that measure, Pokémon games and Dragon Quest games in Japan are consistently blue ocean. What matters most is the context.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are mostly games that appeal to Nintendo fans and fans of 3D Mario. It is true Nintendo has been trying to make 3D Mario more appealing to other audiences, but so far it doesn't seem to have worked all that well. I'm particularly skeptical about 2 decisions regarding SMG 2: the introductory DVD and the abundance of 2D sections. I don't think they will achieve what Nintendo's hoping for. Nintendo has been way more successful with Mario Kart in that regard. I wonder why they can't seem to do the right decisions for 3D Mario like they did with Mario Kart.

Why are the sales for Donkey Kong Land 2 so low? Seems really weird in that list.

My guess is that it came out in 1996 when Nintendo was phasing out the Game Boy, before they understood how big a hit they really had in Pokemon.

Okay, I just checked, and DKL2 sold 55k in 4 weeks. After that, it fell of the charts with 2 more weeks left in 1996. It didn't chart in the top100 for 1996 or 1997, so we'll never know how much it actually sold, but it's definitely much more than 55k.

For reference, the 100th title for 1997 sold 135k. In the last 2 weeks of 1996, the last ranking title sold 17k and 39k respectively. In the last week it was on the charts, DKL2 was the last charting game. Given the holiday rush, DKL2 could have sold close to 100k in 1996 and still not have made the Top100 chart for 1996. In 1997, it could have passed 200k LTD and it wouldn't have made the Top100 chart for 1997 either. Food for thought!

Other interesting notes: In Japan, DKL1 was called Super Donkey Kong GB. DKL2 is the only game actually called Donkey Kong Land in Japan. DKL3 was called Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong. Super Donkey Kong is the name of the Donkey Kong Country series in Japan. Weird!

I don't think it sold much more than 55k. It was going doing every week even though it was December. Even if it was at 31st place for weeks 51 an 52 the maximum it would have sold for 2006 would be 30k more. We are most likely lookind at a LTD<100K.

But that's my point. When SM64 first came out, 15 years ago, one would have thought it would be one of the biggest games ever. And, it did pretty good, but not blue ocean, at all. The thing is, the "3D Mario" game that followed it -- SMS -- sold half that, almost as if many players liked SM64 but just weren't compelled to experience the same kinda thing over again. Of course, comparing sales, especially when some of them were launch titles or pack-in titles, is not perfect, I admit.

The "surprise" of the relatively mediocre sales for 3D Mario spans the whole 15 years. (I don't mean that I was surprised by SMG's sales.) The sales, overall, that you listed, have been surprising to me.

I would have thought it would make sense to give the genre an overhaul, especially with all this blue ocean talk Iwata has been driving home.
