No one noticed that PSP outsold GBA 2 weeks ago by Media Create standards.

PSP - almost 6 yrs of support
GBA - ~3.5 yrs until successor came out

We've been over the software side before.

I didn't know that the PS3 was above the Xbox 360 now. Are those numbers reliable?

I didn't know that the PS3 was above the Xbox 360 now. Are those numbers reliable?

Those numbers mostly look like they're in the right ballpark, but aren't absolutely accurate. First, obviously, most of them are rounded off. Those are not the exact N64 (32.9 million) or Gamecube (21.74 million) sales numbers Nintendo has reported, for instance, for some proof of that. Also, I find that Saturn number interesting; previously estimates I'd seen of the system put it in the 9.5 million range, not 8.7. Though that 9.5 number may be wrong, 8.7 might be a bit low... also, for the DC the number I'd seen is 10.6 million, not 11. Again that source isn't 100% reliable, but at least it's a definitely rounded number.

Also, I've never actually heard a reliable worldwide number for Sega Genesis sales. One estimate put it at 29 million, but that number is too low, since it put US sales at 14 million while now it's thought US sales were probably a good bit higher than that (maybe in the 18-20 million range for North America, though all the proof isn't quite there yet, that number may be high, sources are conflicting...). 34 million could be right, but who knows, I've never heard anybody who does.

Oh yeah, and of course that "Game Boy" line includes the Game Boy Color as well as the various models of the original GB, but Nintendo never released separate sales numbers for the two systems. It doesn't include the GBA though.

Oh, and 10 million is the only Turbografx/PC Engine sales number I've seen, but considering that it pretty much totally bombed in the US and was barely even released in Europe, if that number is accurate that says a lot about how well the system did in Japan...

Aaron Greenberg of Microsoft tweeted that the 360 has sold 45 million worldwide. Also, I thought the PS2 was around 140 million?

How can you say that? There were lines at TGS.

Yeah, about 30 minute lines when everything else was 2 hours+

I still try to fing a single reason (outside moneyhating from Microsoft) Japanese developers announced so many Kinect exclusive games when it was known from before that most of them would bomb.

Why would you need a reason other than moneyhat? Kinect is going to do awful in Japan for multiple, glaringly obvious reasons.

Seeing as those are probably Japan only, is there a source for worldwide Pokemon sales?
Yes, Nintendo comunicates shipments of its best selling title so you can go to Nintendo ir section and find what you like.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/index.html

For example:
Heart/Soul : 10.98M
Black/White: 4.07M ( only Japan for now )
Platinum: 7.06M
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky: 1.40M
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness: 4.50M
Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: 2.04M
Diamond/Pearl: 16.81M
Pokemon Ranger: 2.70M
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team: 3.03M
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team: 2.20M
Fire/leaf: 10.66M
Emerald: 6.32M
Ruby/Sapphire: 15.38M

and so on.

Yep.
What is the comparison between PSP and GBA on the software front ?

I've seen these numbers throw around for PCE in Japan:
PC Engine 3.92 million
PC Engine CD-ROM2 1.92 million

Just throwing a possible scenario out there:

1. Japanese developers partiality think they lagged behind this generation in the west because of their failure to quickly adapt to the new generation

2. Microsoft is pushing Kinect as this generation + .5 (Generation 7.5?), Brings this up to Japanese developers as a chance to succeed in the west(same talk I assume they gave to namco and square-enix at the start of this generation).

3. Japanese developers like this talk, and this time actually makes games that might appeal to the west(Hi demon's souls!) instead of Rpg rehashes and outsourcing games to 3rd rate western developers.

This is ridiculous!
2 years of PSP is less than 1 year of Gba!

1. Japanese developers partiality think they lagged behind this generation in the west because of their failure to quickly adapt to the new generation
Depends on the genre. Capcom actiony stuff, sure, but when you look into RPGs, Japanese developers got bamboozled pretty hard. Look at all the time and money they dumped into Xbox 360 RPGs. There were no returns, no fame, all this energy was lost, and now the're two years behind on building their audience back up.

You wouldn't think they'd make the same mistake again now.

Predictions
[NDS] Magician’s Quest: The Merchant’s Store of Sorcery (Konami) - 65k
[PSP] Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fate (Square Enix) - 145k
[PS3] Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 (Bandai Namco) - 55k

Well now THAT is good, psp's best year yet I guess, boy did it start badly though.

2004 was a really weird year, the platform was only out for a month and didn't have much available for launch.

didn't the PS1 have a slow start too?

The PS1 had a slow start because it was a new challenger up against a surprisingly weak incumbent and it slowly built up to its eventual towering dominance. The PS3 had a slow start because Sony botched the launch in one of the most spectacular fashions ever and let it hang out overpriced and undersupported on the marketplace for two years before finally rolling up their sleeves and fixing the problem by firing the people who screwed the system up in the first place, completely reinventing the system's branding and marketing, and throwing a huge amount of money at price drops and compelling first-party content. Pretty different!

they didnt botch the launch, it was actually good launch... they fucked up their strategy long time before product was launched.

The distinction is pretty meaningless, but even within it I'm not sure I'd agree. God of War 2 should have been a rushed PS2.5 game instead of a late PS2 game (seriously), there was an absolute drought of software after the launch period and before the next fall, the operating system and PSN as a whole sucked, multiplatform support sucked and Sony took a long time to apparently get developers up to speed, and many of the PS3's early exclusives either underperformed or underdelivered globally.

But again I think the distinction is meaningless; making the best out of a bad situation and making the worst out of a good one basically have the same result.

Azlayn predictions are in:

Fallout New vegas: x-box360: 30K
Fallout New vegas: PS3: 50K

Radiant History 30k-40k 50% sell through

Yeah, that's why they aren't pushing rpgs this time around, I'd have to say this stuff has a bit more chance of appealing to the west this time around

A Suda game and both Steel Battalion and Panzer Dragoon spiritual sequels are hardly western-friendly.

Profit-ratio wise, compared to what we saw at the start of this gen, I believe they are. These are not particularly big budget games.

Also, at least this are "semi-Original ideas" that could appeal to the west, not rehashes of fps/rpgs

Although we don't have any stats, I can't imagine Suda games selling worse in America then they do in Japan.

Suda's games are more popular in the west than they are in Japan, so I don't think that's really an issue (although the fact that his non-NMH stuff is incredibly niche probably means that it won't make much of a difference anywhere).
