Has early fan reception to Star Ocean 5 been positive? If not, the PS3 version probably won't help at all.

Actually seems the other way around, lol.
68 days before release:
Ace Attorney 5 = 22 points
Ace Attorney 6 = 21 points

Also the anime had a pretty terrible start
(maybe kids don't care)
, but as long as it raises the IP overall awareness it's still good I guess, see Danganronpa (which was late night though).

@Takao : Usual Amazon bashing but most of the critics seems legit as I read the same things in the import thread.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Has early fan reception to Star Ocean 5 been positive? If not, the PS3 version probably won't help at all.

Based on the import thread:
- The characters are decent and likable
- Gameplay is Star Ocean, spammy but fun
- It's very akin to SO1 and SO2 in terms of presentation (not reliant on cutscenes, the "cutscenes" are seen on the field/gameplay view)
- The game is short, like
20 hours short

You're pretty much ignoring all of the negative impressions (which there are a fair amount) in the import thread.

The game is also getting very bad reviews on Amazon JP. It's sitting at 2.5/5 after about 260 reviews. A ton of complaints about the camera, low production values (poor graphics, bugs, weird animations, etc.), cliche/boring story, and in general, how rushed everything feels.

There were some Wii U re-stock at Bic Camera during this week. Rakuten Books also states that, Mario Maker Set managed to be the best selling console of the week, something not translated into real numbers, but shows how much "wanted" the console is.

On another retailer shop, Santy, pre-orders for Ace Attorney 6 had a great boost last days. They recommend to make reservations in advance, in order to have some benefits. Commercials for the game should come soon, they said.

Yeah but in the end, the import reviewers enjoyed the game despite the problems. It's obvious it's budgeted like Exist Archive but that doesn't take away the fun of all things.

Story isn't bad, not terrible but not fantastic, which is typical for a SO game.

The problems are that the AI can be wonky for some reason and the heavy backtracking.

And I'd take Amazon import reviews with a huge grain of salt. The people who imported it mentioned despite the short stay, the game is still satisfying, but that can still end up being a mixed bag to some who are expecting a long and epic space adventure.

The last part is actually a positive for me. Don't have time to invest 40-50 hours in a game anymore.

Shame about the camera but that can be patched before Western launch. Not sure what to think of the story, but I really loved SO3's story which was universally hated so....

In the west, at least, its getting carried/spread by Smash scenes.

I saw some of Aeana streaming the game and my impression was that Star Ocean 5 looked like a mid-tier PS2 game brought forth into the PS3 era (more open areas, better graphics, more seamlessness in general) and then remastered for the PS4.

It struck me as something that would most appeal to people who were playing games like this in the PS2 era or earlier, or at least were curious about what those were like.

I'm not sure how big of an audience that is in Japan on the PS4 at this point. I would not be surprised to see it do relatively poorly. For posters on our forum though, it will probably be a bit hit.

It has to still sell a lot of its first shipment so it is gonna hit the bomba bins sooner than later. Hardly impressive sales in Japan, not sure about WW.

SO5 utilizes the same engine that they showcased for the PS3 in a tech demo AFAIK. So I am not surprised to hear that it essentially looks like a Remastered PS3 game on PS4. I am just glad that it runs at 60 fps unlike another PS3 remaster (Tales of Zestiria) on PS4.

I also mean that more conceptually than graphically (though that's also true).

It's like what I imagine Star Ocean 4 would have played like if everything progressed smoothly, they took full advantage of the hardware, and didn't take any odd turns with the franchise.

Nothing necessarily screams "This is a PS4 take on adding niceties on top of a PS2 JRPG formula." more so than just going one generation ahead.

Import impressions and reviews were decently good actually. Not sure how it will help the late PS3 version though. It's necessary because of Japan's slow transition but I don't think it was expected to do amazingly on PS3 in 2016. Let's face it, it's the depressed console market in Japan that's the problem here. Also, never go by Amazon JP user reviews.

Anyways, if the game elicits some PS1/PS2-era nostalgia in the West it could do quite decently like SO2 and SO3 did.

Yeah, the market has changed, but so has Japan's.

I doubt they would have gone for a bigger budget Star Ocean 5 coming off from the critical reception of SO4. I am just glad we got one game atleast from their new engine from the PS3 era.

Seems to me that SO5 is to SO3 what Setsuna was to Chrono Trigger. Lol. The heart is willing but the wallet is weak.

I can tell you the next 6 days it stays at 77 points, then 78 points for the following 4 days (numbers pulled from a user on banned site).

There is a COMG database, I have it bookmarked at home so if no-one has the url in the next few hours I'll link it when I get home

Anime effect :)

Haven't read any impressions online, but personally enjoyed that first episode a lot. Then again, I'm a die hard fan, so not sure my impressions matter, ha ha. Talking of the anime, Shu Takumi (creator of the series) confirmed the anime would last two cours (so until late september). Not sure if they'll keep airing the commercials for AA6 until then or not.

On another retailer shop, Santy, pre-orders for Ace Attorney 6 had a great boost last days. They recommend to make reservations in advance, in order to have some benefits. Commercials for the game should come soon, they said.

Hmm? First commercials were shown during the AA6 timeslot on Saturday.

Not sure if they air only during that segment, or at other times too (that's when they debuted, at least).

I had no idea the preorders were open before the release date announcement. I don't think this happened with FFXV in Japan atleast.

Comg doesn't follow the rules of the rest of Japan, they open pre-orders when they want. That's why they had FF XIII Versus on their pre-order ranking for years, and canceled all pre-orders (more than 100) when it was newly revealed as FFXV.

This was most likely the case. As a fun sidenote, Final Fantasy Versus 13 was at something like 102 points before comg cancelled all pre-orders.

FF13 pre-order in the comparison will stay flat for weeks, but had a steep constant rise at some point, which likely coincided with the announcement of the launch date.

Well you could say I'm a die hard fan of the series too (finished the 5 mainline episodes + both Ace Attorney Investigations + Layton vs AA), but the first episode felt super cheap on the animation, the opening was cringe worthy and it felt like a poor copy paste of the game while still rushing the whole case (I mean Payne had like three lines during the trial).

Also it's pretty normal since it's a tutorial case, but with the anime format the whole thinking behind what happened just looked even dumber than it was in the game.

But if you like it that's great, it means that at least some people or kids (which do not have the same standards as we have) could still be able to enjoy it because after watching it I had some serious doubts about that (now to see if the audience is there or not is another matter entirely).

Anyway it's still a bit early to judge the anime as a whole, but when the episode 1 already looks that cheap, it doesn't really bode well for what's coming afterwards.

According to the blog, Wii U stock problems won't be fixed before Golden Week.

Note that it doesn't mean that during GW will be fixed, they can still continue

Last week I asked how long it would be until there was a new round of Wii U shortages. I was hoping the answer wouldn't be right now.
