Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2016 (Mar 21 - Mar 27)

I think it's just a trend as showed in the latest weeks when a lot of franchises had worst sales compared to the past.
Lack of interests, switching to mobile, current generation at the end of its cycle, overexposure of certain brands; there are many different reasons behind these results.
For DS3 I think DS2 was the pinnacle, the brand was launched without emphasis and became a hit due to the word of mouth, but as every game there is a point after that sales won't grew up more. For DQM3 I just think that S-E is publishing too many games related to the DQ world, ok it's the 30th anniversary but Builders,Monsters,Heroes just in 6 months is taking things a little far in my opinion.

There's probably a point when so many games are declining that the ones that aren't are the exception.

It's possible we've hit that point, though I guess it will become apparent as the year goes on.

Are there any games that went up iteration-over-iteration this year?

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I think there's a pretty clear huge loss of interest.

Whether it be the game itself, the mobile game's astronomical success, or the competitive state of the genre on dedicated devices (Yokai Watch/Pokemon), there looks to be far more fundamental issues than just a weaker promotional push.

I'd say the same about Project Diva. Dark Souls strikes me as likely being driven by fatigue or people who previously picked up the game not liking it, but it's holding more stable than the other two.

I think a lot of Miku fans are waiting for Project Diva Arcade, it seems like a much more enticing proposition (with a helluva lot more music tracks) than Diva X.

DQMJ3's sales do seem really bad, though. Hopefully when XI gets released it'll pick back up.

I think its a matter of fatigue on my part from the games and their rapid release on top of... well, being very similar aside from Bloodborne's distinct shift in setting, themes, and somewhat of a mix-up in mechanics.

Even by the time I had finished DS2, I had started getting the feeling of "been there, done that" with a lot of bosses, ideas, and environments just feeling like slightly altered bosses, ideas, and environments from DS1.

I will still buy DS3 on day one, mind, but if its the same as noted above... I will likely be much more skeptical about the next FROM Soulsborne game because I am frankly getting bored of the formula.
I understand. Its definitelly not unusual to get some serie fatigue indeed. I'm curious to if there is anything that they really can do to changes things up to spark more interest among gamers, which then leads to higher sales.

I can't imagine DOAX3 staying around in the charts given the backlash against its smartphone game style exploitation and save corruption bugs. It's getting hammered on Amazon Japan.

The gators didn't pick a very good game to rally behind!

Got any Dengeki numbers? Because they have PS4 (and PS3) versions at < 2k:

Congratulations to:

We won't stop hearing about it ;)

Kidding, congrats! Didn't do too bad myself, pretty surprised at this month, thought I was way off.

Isn't the Japanese version of Dark Souls 3 launching pretty gimped (no multiplayer and no patch)? I don't know how much that would affect sales but those are pretty huge omissions. It seems like they really wanted to rush it out the door in Japan before the quarter ends.

I'm so disappointed by the lack of Minecraft Wii U. :(

Yeah, makes no sense whatsoever. Data from Dec and Jan:

December:

13. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition – 77,233 (N/A physical, 77,233 digital)

January:

09. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition – 71,722 (N/A physical, 71,722 digital)

How the hell does it sell less than 2,000 copies in February when it was still #1 in the Wii U eShop chart all month in February?! o_O

The only gimped version is the X1 version last I heard and we know how well that's doing.

These kinds of games rarely stay on the charts anyway. Even JRPGs will typically drop 80~90% the next week. A more niche game like DOAX3 is even more frontloaded than that. It's why these games rely on preorders so much, and sometimes delay the game if preorders are low.

Are there any games that went up iteration-over-iteration this year?
Does DOAX3 count? >.>
Or do you only mean yearly/bi-yearly franchises

I wonder how much "considerable less" is. Please make it to 100k at least.

Well the original opened at 166,027 on the 360, and if this is significantly lower than its predecessor or slower in adoption, then we're likely going to be looking at YSO's sub-120k predictions rather than above or closer to 120k.

Now, how big the shipment is, is also a big question since if its about where SOIV sold FW, then that'd be, let's say, 150k. A 60% FDS would be a respectable 90k... but that seems too big given the narrative of the retailer. Perhaps the shipment is more like 120-130k.

Capcom's mobile line-up this fiscal year consists of four new games in IPs including Monster Hunter, Sengoku Basara, and Mega Man.

It's not clear if there's two games in the same IP or they just didn't list what the fourth IP is.

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e160401.html

Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced it has established a "Mobile Business Division" with the purpose of reorganizing its mobile operations. This division aims to produce hit titles both domestically and abroad by aggressively utilizing the company's popular IP. Overall, the Capcom Group will strengthen licensed content in Asia in accordance with their new mobile strategy.

With international economic growth and the explosive spread of smartphones as a backdrop, the mobile games market is expected to rapidly grow: from $27.5 billion in 2015 to $37.4 billion in 2019 globally. Mobile content is a driver of growth in the game market as well as an important factor in Capcom's growth strategy.

Under these circumstances, Capcom established its "Mobile Business Division" in order to grow its business in-step with the market and continue offering exciting content. The integration of the Beeline and Capcom brands—which had pursued individual strategies up to this point—joins the development and operational knowhow of each into the new division. Additionally, this allows for fast decision making in rolling out titles that utilize Capcom IP across the globe. In accordance with the division's establishment, Beeline Interactive Japan Inc. has been renamed Capcom Mobile Co., Ltd.

Further, the Capcom Group plans to license successful Japanese titles in Asia in order to expand its revenue in that region.

Under the new organization, Capcom plans to release four titles in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017, including popular brands such as "Monster Hunter", "Sengoku BASARA", and "Mega Man".

The Capcom Group will continue to maximize revenues by proactively releasing popular IP in the high-growth mobile games market.

Capcom's going to advertise Ace Attorney 6 / Gyakuten Saiban during the anime series timeslot. Every week, there'll be a special commercial in the style of the series' court videos (the stuff they generally show at TGS, but those will be made specifically for the commercial). Looks like a different one each week (at least, several ones).

What a good idea! A little bit off-topic, but that would be awesome to see on Splatoon.

First Day Sales Comparison

[360] Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope <RPG> (Square Enix) {2009.02.19} (¥8.925) - 131.000 (80%)
[PS4] Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness <RPG> (Square Enix) (¥7.980) - (60%)

Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope was very frontloaded which is to be expected since it was the last and the biggest of the Xbox 360 rpg "exclusives" aimed to a hardcore fanbase that bought the console for Blue Dragon, Lost Oddyssey, The Last Remnant or Tales of Vesperia. Most of these people were evidently day one buyers.

The blog says that Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness sold considerably less but we don't know the size of the initial shipment but it is highly likely that it is smaller than of the Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope (around 165.000 units). So I think it is a safe bet to say that it sold below 100.000 units on its launch day.

Will Square Enix be satisfied with SO5 selling under 100k first week (or launch day looking at the above explanation)? Do you think that is in line with their expectations for it?

Will Square Enix be satisfied with SO5 selling under 100k first week (or launch day looking at the above explanation)? Do you think that is in line with their expectations for it?

This is the first day sellthrough indeed, not first week.
Not that it would change the final answer though, it looks like the kind of game you would expect to sell in the ~200k range FW 300k+ LTD.

There's no way it can be. you don't green light a sequel to a game that underperformed with higher development costs for the expectation to sell worse. And I say this as someone who was pleasantly surprised by the announcement and quite looking forward to the game.

Will they lose money on the game? Maybe, maybe not. But there's an opportunity cost involved where even if the game does profit they may have made more money by allocating resources elsewhere. Having said the Square appear to want to raise their brand or image again. So having a game that while not making a lot of money, but pleases their fans and raises more awareness for themselves might be something they consider useful. Who knows

Capcom's mobile line-up this fiscal year consists of four new games in IPs including Monster Hunter, Sengoku Basara, and Mega Man.

It's not clear if there's two games in the same IP or they just didn't list what the fourth IP is.

Maybe Ace Attorney? :3
That or Resident Evil would be the big IP they can easily pull from.

Both are considerably harder to translate onto mobile, unless you make a Resident Evil Tower Defense game maybe (do it!!).

Can't believe I am actually excited to learn about Capcom's new mobile games. It's not like we can expect bigger from them at the moment anyway though.

It seems likely that it was made (at least in part) to help their image. If that is the case maybe their expectations aren't unreasonably high for it.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I'm really hoping that SO5 does well, for the fate of the franchise. tri-Ace moving exclusively to mobile would be a nightmare scenario, their amazing action battle systems and interesting game systems are wasted in that market.

All this talk about SO5 doing worse than SO4...

I wonder when we will get a Japanese developed game from a well known IP that releases this year that sells significantly better than previous entries in their own respective series? It's been pretty bad so far and looking at the release schedule there are lots of good looking games, but with the current worsening of the market I don't really feel that any of them will sell beyond what the series as reached in the past (ToB,FFXV,HotShotsGolf,GT,SAO,PowerPro,Basara,Yakuza,Valkyria, etc).

Persona 5 is an obvious one. Maybe Toukiden 2 and Dragon Quest Heroes 2 since they seem to be making some drastic changes to their basic formulas.
