Given the target audience I kind of feel Nintendo Direct would have been the incredibly appropriate venue to announce a date for that.

I'm kind of wondering if the game has been delayed a while at this point (maybe even Q1 2014?).
The reason I thought it might be soon is retailer listings popped up and for a week or two it was featured on the E shop as coming soon, along with Game& Wario.

The Vita is perfect data to show that price drops don't do anything for systems. People that have been in these threads for years continue to spout that price drops do not sustain a new sales level, and yet other members continue to ignore the data. Price drops provide temporary bumps in hardware sales that often last around 1 to 2 months. However when supported with key software (see 3DS) the effects are prolonged. Software will always drive these sales, and no price drop will ignore that. So all of you claiming the Wii U needs a price drop -- take note.
Additionally, why is it that the Vita bump exceeded most expectations, including mine? Because Sony crammed a bunch of (relative to most of the system's lineup) big software releases into the span of a month. Had the only notable software for that period been PSO2/SS/TOHR, it'd surely have dropped below 15K a few weeks ago.

I see.

I kind of wonder if it was almost ready and then they decided to take more time and/or just delay it.

Nintendo does have a bit of a history with "Game X is coming soon!... I mean in six months!".

Either way I don't think it is really a step change game, so delaying it shouldn't hurt the system too much.

Because of Nintendo publishing? Just guessing off of Nintendo saying they were going to help bring more Japanese games outside Japan. Would've been happily wrong if Square-Enix decided to publish it and Nintendo brought over the DQ games instead. :)
Maybe they'll switch it up on us!

bah... Square Enix

lol ok i guess you think if you keep repeating something it might turn out true. I guess May 2014 will put an end to this nonsense. as far as i can see Sony has shown no signs of panic or made any drastic moves. they did a price cut a year and half in which is normal and have noticed that software moves units and no surprise it is going back down as they have no games coming out for a month and then it will go back up again and by then maybe more software for the fall will be announced as it is closer to e3 as well that can sustain momentum. they have publicly announced at the ps4 event that vita will be the ultimate companion for the ps4 and more details will come through out the year. i don't see them turning around and discontinuing vita 6 months into the ps4 timeline but we shall see.
Nintendo is being strangely silent as well about Wii U's terrible sales and appalling software drought, but I somehow don't think that means that they're happy with its performance or have some amazing secret plan to turn it around.

The 3DS is truly SNES-redux, I expect a spiritual sequel to Super Metroid soon. That would be so fucking insane.

We'll find out about how they feel before the end of the month, they can't stay quiet about the end of the financial year. Shipment numbers will be interesting, I'd be surprised if they're much over 500k

it truly seems like it .

Personally iam hoping that PS4 becomes PS1 redux .

some of best gaming days i ever had.

since PS4 seems like it shares the same phillopshophy as PS1 i hope it really happens

3DS and PS4 like that would be beyond awesome.

If the WiiU suddenly rises in this period, the world has gone crazy

Nintendo has themselves to blame for the situation right now

Please look forward to E3.

They're definitely still in a better position than Sony is with Vita, but there are legitimate bases for comparison, no question.

3DS lineup isn't a lineup. It's a declaration of war.
More like showing off the spoils of victory while the enemy is in limbo.

Its possible, PS3 showed third parties they can survive off dedication to one home console and with the west as a major focus these days, many will continue down the PS2 style of support, albeit with muliplatform as a normalcy these day.

I think there are multiple indications (LTD sales, YoY totals and YoY weekly sales) that dedicated handhelds aren't a long-term strategy either, even for Nintendo and even in Japan.
There are multiple indications that this year's 3DS sw will outsell last year's at least by 50% and hw will match if not exceed last year's too.

Vita dropping faster than I'd like to see and Wii U back into the chaos. At minimum it appears that the Vita is finally moving towards replacing the PSP which could lead toward sales stabilizing at some point.
Vita finally moving towards replacing the PSP must be the new joke in these threads

This year the 3DS has Monster Hunter 4 and Pokemon XY, should be no problem beating last year's software numbers.

Yup. Japan needs a really good home console right now (in terms of sales) for the third parties in particular. If they stick to handhelds for another generation they would lose most of their relevancy in the West.

It still amazes how well games sold on PS1. I doubt the software sales will be similar.

strictly in japan :

while many other factors have to be taken into account the two main ones( apart fror selling gangbusters) for a ps 1 redux IMO are:

1)Is Nintendo with wii u going to put up a big fight against PS4 for main console in japan or is it gonna stay where it is now ?

2) it is almost certain that the big studios are going to support PS4 however to achieve ps1 redux sony has to try to get the japan mid tier developpers onboard ( the ones who are currently supporting 3DS)
to spread the love around.

the later makes me wonder if the indie platform that sony is pushing hard could also work for those devs to get their games on ps4 instead of seeing 3DS as their only option.?

EDIT: funny thing is .if PS4 realy is ps1 redux and sells that well then it is very remenicent of N64 vs PS1 days and how that went
only differences is that the WII U isnt an oppresive system ruled by a dictator but one that almost nobody wants.

This just isn't going to happen, frankly. Kind of a waste of time hoping for it.

Are there any similar examples of games that saw such huge drops in predecessor to sequel like that in One Piece?

you are assuming PS4 would sell well already as in Wii U needs to put up a big fight against it.

also, if your motto is "never say never while staying realistic", why does it not apply to Wii U? Or it would not be realistic?

Two questions:

-how much will the "new" Etrian Odyssey sell? If it can sell well enough (let's say, around 150k), could we see a shift in direction for the series?

-will Luigi crack the million mark?
1. I have no idea. The series already regularly does around the 150k mark, but I think they would seriously consider changing the artstyle if it reached 200k or so.

2. Judging by its legs, it certainly looks like it's heading there. I'm not sure yet.

Don´t forget Mario Party. One of the biggest Nintendo IPs in Japan. MP 9 dominated for weeks the charts in Japan.
