Honestly on the Atlus front Sega should be fronting the cost to port their games to a lot more systems than they're on in general.

It's clear that Atlus has both a growing local and international market and those two do not line up in terms of platform choice. Similarly, Atlus' audience is split between platforms as it stands as well due to their release strategy.

On a basic level we should see things like Dancing All Night on 3DS, PersonaQ on Vita, P3P on 3DS, P4G on PS3 (and perhaps more ranging from popular Western platforms to perhaps 4DS if they do some kind of Persona Portable collection), and Persona 5 should be looking at adding PS4 at minimum for the West if not also things like XB1, 360, PC, and if they think there's a local point, Wii U. The last part is also true for P4U. Sega has the internal and/or contract staff to do this and actually push for growth and see what does and doesn't make sense for them.

Now, if we sit and assume that they can only make a game for one platform maximum, their current choices are fine, but they work for a company that has billions of dollars in the bank and bought them for an exorbitant fee, so seeing their publisher have them act like the same 140 person hole in the wall is bizarre, and probably a good part of the reason Sega's software business has collapsed in general.

Somehow I consistently forget about this thread every week

YW2 doing gangbusters, will break 2M no problem, wonder where it will stop 0_0

Maybe 3 something?

3DS sales are pretty good I think? Vitas are better than some previous weeks and far better than last years but probably will drop again

Wii U is still slowing down a bit, PS3 is PS3, PS4 is going back down the rabbit hole, wonder when it breaks 5k?

Oreshika doesn't seem to have that big an opening but it's up against YW2 in its third week I think? Still probably not going to sell too hotly

Murdered Soul Suspect not worth localizing it would seem , Wii Sports club not worth making I guess? Probably doesn't cost a lot though

Who knows of the circumstances behind it, but Ultimax will be released on the 360 in NA when it's only going to be a PS3 game in Japan, which is somewhat interesting, though on a smaller scale than what you've suggested.

Is Atlus done with the Persona 3 movies? Kinda late with a P3P port. Not like they're busy or maybe they're focusing on SMT x FE now :lol

Hell naw. P3M #2 only released in theaters last month and it's looking like there'll be five movies in total.

I watched the first and I thought the second already came out and it finished the story >_>

lmao, five. The fuck is Atlus taking? I'd like to smoke some of it.

I basically agree with this besides two points: PQ would suck on the Vita just like all cartography games would. Could probably hack it on tablets or Wii U though. Also they probably have left money on the table not porting 4 Golden to 3DS or home consoles.

This is a good start. I didn't realize that it was still on 360 in NA. And yes, I do think there are actually cases where it makes sense to not release on a certain platform in some regions, but still have that platform for other regions.

Like the Dark Souls PC and 360 versions don't make a lot of sense in Japan, but they both sold very well in the West. They would have missed out in 1.5-2 million copies if they didn't have them.

I basically agree with this besides two points: PQ would suck on the Vita just like all cartography games would. Could probably hack it on tablets or Wii U though. Also they probably have left money on the table not porting 4 Golden to 3DS or home consoles.

I will definitely admit that not everything would work super great on every platform for various preferences. Like I'm sure P5 anime cutscenes would look bad on a 360 port, though it could still be worth it.

I did actually cover P4G though, but yes I agree it could be on even more platforms than I listed for sure.

After playing P4G on Vita there's no reason it couldn't be on the 3DS as well, it's not particularly graphically intensive.

Persona 3DS I've always wanted, not because I'm particularly fond of the game, but because it could use an ultimate version and that name is just too good.

This may seem an odd thing to say in a MC/Famitsu thread, but why does anyone think that in this day and age, Sony and Microsoft really give a rat's ass about the Japanese console market in the grand scheme.

(Nintendo is seeing a disproportionate amount of their low sales coming from this market so presumably it's still of importance to them)

Does anybody in this thread really think if I have $100M to spend on producing games for a console it's more worthwhile to create games specifically for one market with specific culture, language and tastes that differ from the rest of the global market rather than producing SKUs that are aimed at the collective rest of the console industry?

Opportunity cost.
Saying Sony dropped the ball on the Japanese market presumes that this isn't according to keikaku - not the selling like shit in Japan part, but the focus on the much more lucrative Western console market at the expense of devoting resources specifically to the Japanese market.

Actual most impressive thing about Amazon 2014 best sellers:

20. Minecraft PS3 (Imported).

The thirst is real.

Really looking forward to the Famitsu download estimates, although I'm not sure if they are in this week's magazine.

MC
01./01. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke <RPG> (Level 5) {2014.07.10} (¥4.937) - 331.946 / 1.648.653 (-75%)
Famitsu
01./01. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke <RPG> (Level 5) {2014.07.10} (¥4.937) - 258.554 / 1.539.650 <80-100%> (-80%)

You're supposed to converge. At this rate, MC will have 3 million by the end of the year and Famitsu 2.5 million...

Yeah, the digital sales are not in this week's magazine yet.
Sorry for giving high hopes . :(

As for big upcoming titles for 2014... Phantasy Star Nova, Toukiden Kiwami, Neptunia U, Minecraft, School Idol Paradise, Persona Dancing all Night, and Corpse Party off the top of my head.

If by "big titles" you mean selling more than 30k.

Demon Gaze did fine though. 200k shipped. I know, shipped, but compared to Atlus' Persona brand, Experience Inc. games is nothing even when all they create is cartography games.

It's probably the case for Corpse Party and School Idol Paradise, but P4D Phantasy Star and Toukiden are 150k+ sellers (and even more for Phantasy Star), Minecraft is an unknown but could perform well (just look at Terraria)

I would not underestimate the current insane popularity of Love Live and its merchandise here.

It far surpasses Sword Art Online, and I wouldn't be terribly shocked if the game did similar numbers to Hollow Fragment at the very least.

Probably the biggest wrinkle with this plan is if Nintendo plans on creating some handheld/console hybrid which would not only disrupt their handheld but also their console (Which is younger, even if it's clearly a failure).

Even then I might do it. Not saying you're wrong, just adding in that extra wrinkle (which has apparently been hinted at).

yes there's that wrinkle but if I were nintendo I'd really consider my whole plans and try to think twice and trice regarding how I want to take advantage of Yokai Watch.

YW is, in 2014 in the current video game enviroment in Japan, a real miracle. Third párty New-ish IP selling above 1 million on release week? that sounds like stuff that used to happen in the SNES/PS1 generations when Japan actually gave a damn.

of course, they can rely on their current hardware and keep releasing stuff with the more than decent userbase but that's shortsighted in my opinion.

ideally, I think Nintendo should be aiming to have 2 out of their 3 main selling IPs, (all-new pokemon, Monster Hunter 5 and Yokai Watch 3) in the first 18 months of life of their new hardware in Japan if they want to stand a chance.

if those sequels to major IPs get released on 3DS in late 2015 or 2016, what's left for the release window for their next platform? and it's not like IPs don't lose value and those 3 IPs may not be as powerful as they are now, everything can change, I'd hurry up.

Rushing out a new system is really a mindless thing to do. First there needs to be enough resources available to sustain a constant stream of games, something that simply isn´t feasible at the moment looking at their current WiiU focus, QOL and their ongoing 3DS support.

3DS is a very good example how a slightly too early launch can backfire in a big way, despite that it actually had a pretty good 2011 lineup overall considering it got OoT, MHTriG, SM3D and MK7 among other things. If it launched in October 2011 instead of February it would have had left a really great first impression and the early 2012 games like Kid Icarus, Kingdom Hearts and Resident Evil would have helped cementing this first impression. Instead it suffered from the early doom and gloom articles for quite some time, just because of a slightly premature launch and slow summer period.

Also it´s really naive to think that 3rd parties would risk potential profits on a healthy system with a big userbase just to support a new system that for no reason was launched prematurely. And it´s as naive to think that simple ports of those games would be system-sellers in Japan, the most recent example that this doesn´t work is PS4. The results would be mediocre at best and it would be better to simply launch the system at a later date with potential better and/or more profitable hardware at a mass market friendly price.

but noone is talking about rushing in to the market and releasing some halfassed hardware out of nowhere. I am assuming nintendo is around 60%-70% completion state regarding the concept of their next handheld, right now and that they have a plan regarding software. I personally believe they'd be better off releasing a new handheld in Q4 2015 instead of later but who knows.

you seem to believe (correct me if I am wrong) that releasing a new nintendoi handheld, period, is bad. you use words like "rushing out" and "prematurely" like nintendo hasn't been planning the next hardware for the last 5 years.

when do you think it would be the better moment to release the handheld? 2017?? cause, damn, holy shit, if that's your answer. you are looking at 5k-7k weeks for the most part of the year in 2016, being generous..

Also it´s really naive to think that 3rd parties would risk potential profits on a healthy system with a big userbase just to support a new system that for no reason was launched prematurely

that's where nintendo's money come into play. Secure the exclusivity to your next handheld by paying up in some way.

It´s like you believe games are created out of thin air in a matter of weeks. It simply would be a catastrophic move to launch yet another system early without a constant release schedule, something very difficult to pull off when they are actually focusing on WiiU right now. It´s also interesting that you are talking about making their money talk and securing exclusives, completely disregarding and ignoring that they have posted losses the past few years and that they actually have to post profits if they want to keep their position in the company any longer.

Killing off their money maker prematurely surely sounds like a "brilliant move". The same goes with paying 3rd partys instead of making money out of royalties from potential multimillion sellers like the possible MH sequel and Yokai Watch on 3DS, and a great amount of money with their 1st party releases while the 3DS is still healthy. The money is in the software sales and they should take advantage.

About the launchedates, you are suggesting a 2015 release so how does your very pessimistic prediction of 3DSs sales performance in 2016 matter at all? Neither the 2015 launch date nor your prediction of the sales performance in 2016 sound in the slightest reasonable.

Way too high, I don't think it's going to do well in Japan. Zelda isn't really that popular anymore and the musou audience isn't there on the Wii U.

Considering the audience for Persona games, it doesn't make much sense. Except maybe for Dancing All Night on PS3 if it uses the same engine as Project Diva F, and Persona 5 on X360 if it uses the same engine as Catherine, the rest is that good old port argument.

Persona Q would mean porting Etrian Odyssey engine to Vita. P3P on 3DS is asking for a port of a port. P4G on PS3 would be the port of an enhanced port of a game available on PS3 as a PS2 classic. Would it be really worthy?

If the argument is that it could (and would) sell more copies, then we can go back and ask why every third party game from a major company is not on every platform, and even why first party games are not on other platforms.

It's pretty obvious what he's talking about, the cartography games and mention of Wii u and tablets.

It's obviously the hardware/personal preference.
I agree that he is most likely only talking about personal preference, but i was wondering if he thought that making those game for another platform would hinder sales potential, and then its not just an arguement about what he personally likes. Nirolak's post was about sales, so its not that obvious that hes only talking about his preference, in my opinion. Otherwise i wouldnt have asked i then first place =)

LTD sales of the first game:
