It's definitely a part of it, if not only for the fact that many smaller titles that would have had retail releases on DS and early 3DS are now digital only. Though as the dedicated gaming device market contracted as a whole including digital sales wouldn't make up for it.
There are companies talking about Asian sales including Japan without splitting that up, so talking Asian releases is actually more on topic than randomly talking about WW or America.
Sony is the driving force behind the current sales expansion in the Asian market. I guess that's one way to push software for stationary consoles even if the former home market isn't too hot for such anymore.
right. I'd be interested to know from Japan-gaf if there is any advertisement at all.
I mean GamesCom is next week - would be weird if they didnt have anything new to show for one of their biggest upcoming titles.

Oh, and next episode will also have the "another Episode 27" and the first episode of the new anime series, so it's going to be a pretty big one. Looks like October is when things are finally going to get serious.

Yep, the 3DS and PS4 were both disappointing in terms of sales for leading sales console and handheld. In the prior generation, the Japanese market supported two consoles and two handhelds. This generation, the lead systems sold significantly less than any other generation leading system. Meanwhile the other handhelds and consoles were complete disasters. Not even factoring in mobile.
Hopefully with the dedicated gaming market going down to Switch and PS4 things will improve. In theory developers will be able to develop more projects for each system as well as saving on time and money. Also both audiences will be more concentrated on the two systems hopefully leading to higher sales. I think the Japanese dedicated gaming market reducing down on dedicated gaming systems will significantly help game developers feeling strained trying to support 3DS, Vita, PS4, Wii U, Xbox One, PC, and/or Mobile.
It's definitely less than 1 million given they list expectations for anything that is 1+ million in their fiscal presentations.

The Japanese publishers who seem to have announcements at Gamescom are Bandai Namco and Square Enix, though both also publish Western games, so we're not certain they will bring new Japanese titles.
I'll do Road to TGS in a bit, but I think Namco was including Sword Art Online and maybe their mobile games in that.

For some reason publishers moved away from announcing games at Gamescom. Sony said they stopped because its so close to E3, but Paris Games week is only a month before PSX so that doesnt really make sense to me.

The third game in the Tomb Raider reboot is about due for announcement. Rise is two years old now. That could be S-E's Gamescom announcement.
Most publishers don't actually make enough games for Gamescom to make sense as an announcement platform anymore.
Now they mostly announce updates to existing games, or very PC and/or European specific games that are unlikely to be on Switch.
That and the show is seen primarily as an opportunity to get fans hands on with games, so Namco announced new games at the anime festivals prior, and then announced they're all playable at Gamescom. I suspect Sword Art is too given their Gamescom press release said they had unannounced games that would be playable there.
We do seem to be getting Age of Empires 4 for example, but uh, not a Switch candidate.

SE does not have internal Chinese localization team as I recall, neither do many Japanese publishers. Sony has a translation center in Taiwan so why not use it. I heard that localization started last year but progressed slowly because SE insisted that no script could leave the SE office until game launch so the translators have to go to SE's office to do the work.

The former is common, but the latter is not for companies who like to do simultaneous launches.

Huh? 3DS is the second highest selling system of all time in Japan, after only the DS (and Game Boy if you count Game Boy Color numbers which unlike Nintendo you shouldn't, but even if you do it only got to its total after 13 years).
Also last generation the market did not support two home consoles, it supported one at a time, it's just that that one swapped from Wii to PS3.
It can't be many 100s of thousands either, their messaging on it is a total mess with MHW commercials/videos coming out now of all times. Could have waited a week or two.
It takes a special kind of Apple-courage to advertise a different product on the eve of the launch of another in the same IP.

The only reason the 3DS is not the worst selling Nintendo handheld is because the GBA's life was cut in half. The 3DS is only gonna end up outselling the PSP by a few million Also the PS4 is selling at the same rate PS3 was. PS3 for the first half of its life was competing against the Wii. PS3 up until the Slim/FF13 release was widely regarded as a failure and PS4 is performing on pace with it. There's no excuse this time of a console like Wii taking away from its sales. The Handheld market last gen was around 53 million userbase, while this gen will likely end in a 30 million userbase for handhelds. The console market last gen had a 24.5 million userbase. This gen the console market will likely end up with ~15 million.
I would hope its more like 200-300K.

Huh? In Japan the 3DS was selling faster than the GBA. GBA never had highs like 2012 and 2013 3DS sales.

Yeah I realized my error and that I was wrong there. I was confusing WW with Japan. I edited it too late. However, my point still stands that the Japanese handheld market went from 53 million last gen to about 30 million this gen. The Console market has gone from 24.5 million to ~15 million when the PS4 is done selling.

If memory serves me right, i remember Capcom doing a similar thing in the past:
Announcing the PS2 port of Resident Evil 4 even before the GC version was released. Which was totally unnecessary given that the port was more or less a year away. That costed both sales of consoles and the game.
MH:XX is no different. They make public the Switch port is coming months in advance possibly impacting the 3DS version sales. One up this by eclipsing the port itself, turning on the propaganda wheel for the latest main entry in the series before XX port is released.
Has Capcom made this in other cases or outside Nintendo platforms? Would really like if someone know the answer.
i do apologize since it seems i might be singling out Nintendo platforms but those are the examples i know of. Well those and the EA one... which again was for a Nintendo plafrom.
i don't think that's comparable to the above examples. But do you think in the cases you know of that it compromised sales for a given platform as much? Would be great if you mentioned concrete examples.
RE 4 was known as an exclusive up until that point. MH:XX was exclusive to the 3DS and most people expectations were for the series to continue on the 3DS succesor. And the EA case was really something else.

Monster Hunter XX is first-class mismanagement. I think it could have been really successful, a great way to start transitioning the 3DS fanbase to the Switch and without hampering Monster Hunter World next year, but the way they handled this project seems to be a combination of Capcom underestimating the Switch and panicking over Monster Hunter World.
Okay so I don't know what kind of contract is preventing Hino to announce that Inazuma Eleven Ares is for Switch but it's getting ridiculous.

I dont really see the big deal regarding the MHXX port advertisement. The 3DS version came out like 6 months ago. Feels a bit like a non-event to me. And i cant see it having any big impact releasing it before Monster Hunter World. Before for example Street Fighter 5 was announced, they announced Super Street Fighter 4 for PS4. Didnt feel like a big deal in regards to SFV.
Those are on the same system. One directly feeds into the other.

I dont think that matters, both cases are "old" games, and SSF4 being announced there was the first version for PS4 of SF4. One could also argue that people would rather buy SSF4 instead of SF5 because they announced it at the same time. I dont think that really have any noticeable impact.

The Switch version should have come out day-and-date with the 3DS version anyway. The entire XX project will have been a disappointment, which I don't think would have been the case with a cross-gen release.
If they had to release it later though, it's definitely weird to have a bundle but no advertisement. It's like half-trying to be a big deal.

Of course it matters. The whole point of USFIV(and similar releases) is to help establish the install base for the main release earlier. MHXX Switch runs totally counter to that.

That seems like a different arguement. Would you say that its basically pointless to release this port on Switch because no other MH game is announced for the Switch? From what i understood above here, it was about advertisement of MHXX for Switch, and that they're releasing it before MHW. I dont think it really matters that much. In other words, i dont think MHW would really pull down the sales of MHXX for Switch. Just like announcing SSF4 for PS4 wouldnt really affect the sales of SF5.
No the point is that cases like USFIV and SFV(or MH Tri G and MH4) have a symbiotic relationship because any promotion for one directly benefitted the other in terms of establishing an audience.
Announcing MH4 before the release of MHTri G benefitted that game because people bought a 3DS and Tri G knowing they would have had to get one for MH4 anyway. Releasing MH Tri G benefitted MH4 because people had already bought a 3DS for Tri G.
MHXX and MHW have the exact opposite relationship.

Sure, i know, thats why i said that its a different arguement than what i had. The discussion above here talks about advertisement, and saying that its a bad idea to do a different release in the same IP. Thats why i think the release of MHXX Switch doesnt seem like a big event, even if it had gotten more advertisement, in my opinion. Having MHXX for Switch and MHW shouldnt affect both released a lot.

Or release the switch version at launch like people were expecting in the first place. The same period where said 3DS game came out the same time as the 3DS successor was launching. Would have avoided the crossover and sold a lot more of the switch version.
