Which, for reference compares as, from 2014:
Cold Steel II ended up at 151pts at Comgnet PSV+PS3 (77+74)
Cold Steel I probably above 100pts and below 130pts, cuttoff line was higher so the 4 SKU didn't show up regularly

Anyway it's on track to have a FW around 100k as expected, less than the previous two entries which were handheld + home console but higher than a single SKU only.
Sales will be lost with the transition to PS4 but it's not as bad as what was expected at first, with digital and legs it might crawl its way to 160-180k, not so far from the >200k the first two entries had.
If it pays off with higher western sales good on Falcom and it bodes well for the upcoming Sen no Kiseki IV

Trails of the Sky did very well in its first entry on Steam (310,561 ± 16,451) but they've been doing much worse since then, substantially so.

Sky SC: 45,832 ± 6,321
Sky 3: 16,873 ± 3,836
Cold Steel: 19,382 ± 4,111

This is one of those "novelties" for steam that do really well in their first entry for curiosity, but then collapse either by a lack of extended interest or bad marketing or both.

Better or worse, I don't think Falcom make too much money on the western sale. They seem to let Xseed handle everything, which to me sounds like they just sell the license for one time instead of having a cut in every copy sold.

Trails in the Sky 2 had also a ... chaotic localization to say the least, which ended up with the PSP game being released in 2015 and a lot of lost sales along the way.

Nevertheless a PS4 game in western markets in 2018-19 can only do better than a PS3/PSV one in 2015-2016, they might also go with a simultaneous PC release.

Pretty sure the Falcom director mentionned western markets as one of the reasons they went PS4 exclusive with the third entry of the series, we also need to see how this strategy pays of on the Asian market.

heh,Is there any reason why Xseed still haven't shared some mumbers about the sales?
They do what they want, I don't think western publishers like them often share numbers, at least publicly.

Last year Falcom shared a worldwide number though : 900k.
We know that 500k comes from Japan and that from the 400k left the biggest chunk is from the Asian market, so Cold Steel 1&2 could be anywhere between 100-150k for western markets. (CS2 wasn't even released in EMEA when the number was published)

Went and looked, of the 900k reported we have tracked (in our GAF excel sheet): 437,016 from Japan.

19,382 ± 4,111 from SteamSpy

So ~440k is left for Asia + western sales, though usually SteamSpy and general buying trends aren't completely divorced in the west so with such low SteamSpy numbers I can't imagine the numbers on the PS3/Vita were *much* larger individually. So most of the numbers have to have come from Asia.

Localizing The 3rd before Zero and Ao was a mistake. The number "3" isn't attached to Zero. It's a more accessible game. There's more to show off for marketing. It's also better. 3rd is an interesting title, but I don't think it's essential.

The 900k number is from 2016, Cold Steel on PC wasn't released back then.

For Japan you can take a look at MC CY 2015 numbers

463./071. [PSV] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II # <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2014.09.25} (¥6.800) - 8.240 / 123.623
[PS3] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II # <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2014.09.25} (¥7.800) - 3.843 / 92.508
[PSV] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel [2][PlayStation Vita the Best] <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2015.03.05} (¥3.400) - 2.542
And MC 2014 CY numbers

479. [PSV] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel # <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2013.09.26} (¥7.140) - 7.923 / 120.039
507. [PSV] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel [1/2][Super Price] <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2014.06.26} (¥5.184) - 7.082 / 7.082
547. [PS3] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel # <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2013.09.26} (¥8.190) - 6.152 / 100.951
866. [PS3] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel [1/2][Super Price] <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2014.06.26} (¥5.184) - 2.426 / 2.426
218k for 2015, 230k for 2015, adding a few k of missing sales for 2015 across non charting SKU, a few k of extra sales from January to August 2016, and digital in the 15-20k ballpark should put the game somewhere north of 470k in Japan at least

Tokyo Mirage Sessions deserved so much better. One of the best Wii U games for sure.

I would love a sequel or even just an updated port, but I doubt it will happen.

The only thing i know on Falcom Trails series is that it is popular in China, Taiwan, and HK.

It never seems to caught any popularity on the west there. There is a reason why PC is soo important for Falcom.^_^

From their beginnings they developed on microcomputers (PC-88, X1 and others), their story is more there than in the consoles.

TMS is really good, wonder if a Switch port would’ve done anything.
Can’t see it happening anytime soon with FEW and FE proper coming out 2017-2018

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Well, with the release of Strange Journey DEEP, all the DS MegaTen games are getting updated re-releases to the 3DS (Devil Survivor, Devil Survivor 2, and SJ).
We just need EO3 and all the big Atlus DS JRPGs will have made it to 3DS.

An expanded TMS Switch makes a lot of sense for an easy early Atlus release.

I suppose in theory that may be true, but considering that Catherine never left the 360/PS3 when PS4 was looking for games in its early days, I don't see it as a huge possibility, especially when #FE didn't do great numbers on WiiU to begin with.

tbf you are comparing two different sub-studios of Atlus

Dragon's Dogma prediction is very low. Such a shame, but I can't say I'm surprised. I haven't heard anything about the game in the last couple of months. Were there any new trailers? I don't think Capcom spend many tweets etc about the game afaik. There was some buzz around it when the game released on PC, but now it's complete silence at the places I regularly visit on the internet.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

TMS is a first party title...it will end up on Switch if and when Nintendo wants it on Switch. They will want to recoup some of their investment on it - the question is rather when not if.

Cant compare that to Catherine where Atlus themselves would have to foot the bill.

Even if Atlus wants to port TMS they would need Nintendo/IS to okay it which might not happen.

Also maybe slightly related I saw someone post of twitter that there were files on the SNES Classic Mini implying SMT was at one point planned for it. Not sure if its true.

Why would Atlus "want" the do anything regarding a game they didn't fund or publish?
Because it's still their game. I imagine the Pokken devs wanted to release it on Switch.

Maybe not considering the fact it's barely an upgrade over the Wii U version.

It's not though? Nintendo paid for the game to be made before there was even a concept of what it was. It was essentially a contract job for Atlus to make a SMT flavored FE game for Nintendo. Paid for by Nintendo. Published by Nintendo. I doubt anyone in Atlus cares unless Nintendo comes back with more money and says "port this".

Yeah, I'm sure the people spent years of their lives on the game wouldn't care at all about the possibility of getting into the hands of more people.

That's not to say Sega/Atlus execs would greenlight a port even if they could but the idea that they wouldn't even care just because it was funded/published by Nintendo is kind of BS.

Besides SteamSpy stats, XSEED has made the games available on DRM-free platforms as well, and there have been a few instances of their employees saying that the sales on those platforms aren't insignificant.

But in general, i'm glad to see it's going to do decently, especially considering it's not only the 3rd entry in this arc but also factors in a ton of elements from the other arcs as well, and the platform change. (As a purchaser of the game myself, I have to say i'm very happy the series left the Vita. All facets of the presentation have been greatly improved that make for a much better experience.)

I still think it's an easy choice to port it for a schedule hole in the next few years. It will do better on a more popular system as it is a great game with something of a cult following.

Looking at anecdotal reports apparently Nintendo didn't deliver a final big Switch shipment for this quarter just in Japan.

The Switch got the image of a ports machine because of a couple of big ports. I think we won't see a lot of ports anytime soon, and if there are some ports in the works, they won't get released close to each other. That's my guess, at least. I'd love to play those great last-gen games on Switch btw.

Edit: sorry for the double post; I should've edited my last post instead.

A disappointing. I think handheld mode might run worse than Wii U.
Hope it’s not a sign of what to expect from GameFreak’s own titles

Switch has like 2 Wii U ones for the first year. Seems like an exaggeration by some.

2-3 a Year is a good way to fill up gaps with quality titles

Pokken has nothing to do with GameFreak...why would it be a sign of what to expect from the on a completely different title that wont be out anytime soon ?

Yeah, of course it was exaggeration by people, but it still was said all over the internet by many. :(
Besides first-party ports, there was also LEGO City Undercover, Disgaea 5, Puyo Puyo Tetris (although brand-new in the west), etc.

Tokyo Mirage and Wonderful 101 ports make too much sense. Only because they can bomb a second time and people on GAF will finally understand the problem wasn't the Wii U, it was the games.

I know, that’s why I said “GameFreak’s own”.
X&Y were pretty rough and they don’t have HD experience. Hoping they don’t go for 720p or not properly utilizing docked mode

I’m not sure about TMS being an issue with the game. It was well received and games like persona do decently well.
An HD Altus JRPG on a handheld would appease people

W101 would probably bomb, but Bayonetta 2 should do well.
Would’ve done pretty great if it was out this year.

Not necessarily. I do think both games would do significantly better on Switch than Wii U, but I could see Wonderful 101 still retaining a cult audience due to its unique controls and presentation.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions, on the other hand, has a pretty traditional turn-based battle system and it features characters from one of Nintendo's own franchises. I don't think it would set the charts on fire (because it's just not the type of game to do so) but I think it would find much more success than it did on the Wii U, especially since it had great word of mouth originally.
