Media Create Sales: Week 46, 2013 (Nov 11 - Nov 17)

Super Mario Bomba

If they shipped 500k(doubtful) thats a 100k opening which is horrible.Below pretty much everyones expectations which where already lower than the usual 3D world entries. Maybe its legs will redeem it.

Taiko is a real slow burner. The ones that opened on PS2 had a 64k opening and went on to sell over 700k 0_0

I dont think wiiu performance has much to do with what ps4 will do, but i think saying the ps4 is going to certainly sell well when the launch lineup consist of a couple of ports, niche and western games looks like people that said wiiu was going to dominate becausebof dqx and monhan. It will have third party support, but most people buy a console based on games, not promise... But i dont see it selling as bad as the wiiu never.

As for shipments, i guess we will have to wait till next week to know, but i dont think they are big like 500k. Retailers already showed that, bizarrely, they have faith, but only one game sold as much in a year. Ordering that for the opening is insane. Most people would order some and wait to see the movement.

Just so we're clear: The shipment is almost certainly going to end up being less than 250k. There isn't a shot in hell of retailers betting that heavily on a game with so few preorders even if it is Mario. 500k is pure fantasy.

The last time people were making prediction of next gen doing badly in NPD threads due to low Wii U sales signaling doom of industry a lot of crow was served.

We already know PS4 will be getting big 3rd party IPs :

FF, MGS, Yakuza,Dynasty Warriors

and it is natural target for Tales, Resident Evil, Dark Souls, etc.

as well as it will have most of western IPs that matter in Japan - GTA, CoD, BF, Uncharted

Plus it's cheaper and won't have competitors unlike PS3.

To me there is really no reason to believe that the PS4 will reach PS3 levels based on what we currently know.

You are basing your entire argument on comgnet, which is a small chain of stores as it gets. I dont believe in 500k, but i dont think comgnet holds so much importance on retailers minds, and since we dont know the situation in other stores...

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
20%? tut tut tut. Cometh the hour, cometh the bombas. Painful numbers next week approach.

I'm not sure the PS4 will do amazingly, but it has everything to reach PS3 levels.. It's just 30% less expensive and has no 360 nor hyper fashionable wii to compete..

Call me crazy but I really think 3DS sales is cannibalizing into WiiU's sales.
Actually it is eating every other console and handheld's share but as for now WiiU got effected the most IMHO.
(Vita was effected at its launch mostly, but after everyone knew Monster Hunter's not coming to Vita it's not affected furthermore.)

Nothing crazy about that! As it was said many times in the past, it's actualyl pretty logical when you think about it, and the main reason why Nintendo should focus on a hybrid next time.

To put it simply, when you like Nintendo games, nowadays, the 3ds has everything you need, except for a "mature" zelda and a metroid maybe. But those games don't even sell in japan. Every major Nintendo ip has its more popular iteration on portable now, like was demonstrating Freezie KO. There is just no need for a Nintendo home console, especially if it doesn't offer any alternative experience like the wii did.

Now i still think Mario 3D world could be the local multiplayer title that has the power to do what nintendoland didn't, reaching families and such. But it doesn't seem so for now. Maybe it will become a big thing this Christmas. That's certainly the last WiiU chance, with Mario Kart later. I mean the last chance to reach a wide mainstream market. Smash Bros is aimed at core nintendo fans.

Don't be so sure, they shipped almost 200k for Pikmin 3, so I wouldn't be surprised if Mario's shipment exceed 300k (but 500k it's a fantasy of course).

lol at people worried about Mario. The games stay on the shelves for a while. And if I'm not mistaken, Taiko (even on the Wii) starts of at bombs levels and then climbs up steadily.

Shame about Cooking Mama though.

Holiday season starts this week in Japan. The 23rd is a national holiday, and from that day christmas boost starts. So next week we'll see the first mini boost for some evergreen games, and every week will get higher until the end of the year.
Thanks for clarifying! The rest of this year should interesting I suppose.
Week of bombas indeed:

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy - 50-60% (shipment was much lower than the last entry)
Super Mario 3D World - 20%
One Piece: Unlimited World Red - 20%
New Atelier Rorona - 30-40%
Aikatsu 2 - 30%

This week succes:

Taiko no Tatsujin Wii U Version - 5%
Cooking Mama 5 - 5%

Ouch at that numbers. Expected the new Atelier Rorona perform better, but things don't bode well for a remake of a game that just released 4 years ago. For Cooking Mama I guess people just burned out already.

Hm. A low percentage first day for a game like Mario is never a sign of good things the way I see it. I hold hope that it can perform well enough during the weekend. Do the games generally sell better then or something?

Yes Mario will have legs (shorter, stubbier ones than ever), but what next weeks numbers are going to indicate are that there is just no pent up demand for titles on WiiU after a straight year of nothing.

W101 didnt make even a splish, WWHD is that "eh, port zone", so you're travelling all the way back to July, like half a year ago since the last big 'new' release. You'd think owners of this accursed platform would be deliriously thirsty for software that justifies their ill advised hardware purchase, but nope.

Worse still will be whatever hardware bump it manages to inspire, and how people pinning "wait til _____" hopes still alive on the board will all have to switch over to "SLOW BURN/LONG LEGS/CUMULATIVE VALUE" before giving up the ghost entirely.

The last few pages will be a gold mine in a couple months.

Can recall seeing posts exactly like this in reaction to some Wii U posts/threads back in Feb/March this year.

Worse still will be whatever hardware bump it manages to inspire, and how people pinning "wait til _____" hopes still alive on the board will all have to switch over to "SLOW BURN/LONG LEGS/CUMULATIVE VALUE" before giving up the ghost entirely.

'I'm sure most people are probably buying the game digitally'.

Nintendo first party games are usually that price, and that discount price, only games like TW101 or Rayman cost more. Third party games can be as high as 7000 or 8000

If they perhaps, sell TW101 at the same price as their first party game, will TW101 sales performed much better?

I'm not going to say no, but this game was really hurt by a lack of advertising and a demo that confused a lot of people.

Shame, the game looks really interesting. A single gif managed to get me really interested in it. I fear that Nintendo take it as "new IPs isn't profitable" and wouldn't make any new IP in the future since TW101 supposed to have casts of Nintendo characters right? I hope it doesn't hinder Platinum Game from helping out Wii U in Japan.

Sellthrough for Media Create:

01./00. [PSV] God Eater 2 # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.11.14} (¥5.980) - 266.326 / NEW <75,86%>
04./00. [PSP] God Eater 2 <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.11.14} (¥5.980) - 112.024 / NEW <63,29%>

So, God Eater 2 Vita first shipment is 351k and PSP first shipment 177k. Total shipment 528k.

Persona 4 is still the Vita most sold game according to Media Create:

[PSV] Persona 4 Golden <RPG> (Atlus) {2012.06.14} (¥7.329) - 268.000

Other interesting information:

[PSV] PlayStation Vita TV # <H-W> (Sony Computer Entertainment) (¥9.954) - 22.000
[PSV] PlayStation Vita TV [Value Pack] <H-W> (Sony Computer Entertainment) (¥14.994) - 20.000
[PSV] God Eater 2 [PlayStation Vita × God Eater 2 Fenrir Edition] <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥25.960) - 20.000

With the holidays, GE2 would probably ends up around 800K combined on VITA and PSP. Some growth from the first game but not enough to be a game changer.

Also, the non-bundled VITA sold 26K compared to 21K the week b4. Not sure if it's good or bad.

Don't be so sure, they shipped almost 200k for Pikmin 3, so I wouldn't be surprised if Mario's shipment exceed 300k (but 500k it's a fantasy of course).

and they sold thru that shipment!

'I'm sure most people are probably buying the game digitally'.

yup... like on VITA

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I think Mario will be ok, relatively speaking- I bet it sells through around 40% this week and easily sells out the first shipment in December.

Taiko on the other hand...yea. That audience is clearly still playing that series on the Wii and a 5% sell through is terrible no matter how leggy the series usually is.

If GE2 manages to sell 800k it will be a gamechanger. 800k is a huge number and a pretty significant growth from the first one. It most probably won't but downplaying it like every single franchise can sell 800k sounds ridiculous.

Nintendo first party games are usually that price, and that discount price, only games like TW101 or Rayman cost more. Third party games can be as high as 7000 or 8000

If I'm not mistaken, that Romance of the XII Kingdoms game went as high as 10k+ Yens, I believe. Insane stuff.

800k sounds huge to me as well. I'm hoping for 400k Vita and 200-250 PSP.

I really want a game to break 500k on the Vita.

It's still missing the two biggest 3rd party IPs in Japan. If they announced that the PS4 was getting DQX: Complete and MH4 within a year of launch, I'm sure it would instill more confidence in people for the PS4's outcome in JP.

As of now, I'm not convinced the PS4 will do as well as even the PS3 did.

The first Vita game to crack 500k will be Metal Gear Solid VI.

...Just as soon as it leaves my imagination and becomes a real thing. I'd like it if the first teasers just said 'PS VITA' in an MGS style font.

On this note, here are the PSP games that did at least ~600K by Famitsu. I put a divider line for ~800K.

God Eater Burst might have made it to the 600K line after Garaph stopped updating. I can't currently recall.

On amazon, the last taiko on Wii is having a bump right now and it's already on the top 100. Since Taiko wiiu is being marketed, i guess some people just want to scratch the taiko fix, be it on the wii or wiiu.

But i still think it will do well. It seems like a perfect game for the holidays. Even more than Mario.

Just two games with stronger ties to handhelds and failed to ignite interest in the WiiU is going to make all the difference?

I feel tempted to link to "Any reason why Wii U won't dominate Japan" thread.

Lack of DQ and MH didn't stop 600$ PS3 from selling close to 10 milions despite game drought in early years and losing in weekly sales to xbox for few weeks due to Microsoft moneyhatting every jrpg developer in Japan.

If there are any home console gamers left in Japan then PS4 is their only choice.

[PSV] God Eater 2 [PlayStation Vita × God Eater 2 Fenrir Edition] <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥25.960) - 20.000

Welp, Yodobashi is useless. The dream is over.

The bundle sold really well.

Great insight as always. Btw the 3DS rankings are back on the (3DS) eShop after Nintendo suddenly stopped them. I checked out your site and noticed they hadn't returned there!

Thanks. Yes, they only skipped one week. The one in which the DD version of KI:U launched and in which it took #1 on the recent charts (thanks to free download codes I'd guess). I'm pretty sure it didn't make #1 on the weekly charts but we'll never know.

I posted the last two weeks in the local NeoGAF thread: Here and here.

I'm not entirely sure if and how I'll continue to cover these charts. When I started it was just Vita Top 10 and the screenshots are easy too take. Now it's Top 20 for Vita and two Top 25s for 3DS.

For Vita I'm only doing the image chart anymore which is pretty quick to do. I guess I'll post the 3DS ones on NeoGAF when there are interesting releases.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Considering the kind of games they are, 20% first day sell-through is not that bad for both Mario and One Piece. It could mean reaching 40% for first week, and then Holidays will help in selling the rest AND in getting more copies on the shelves. Unfortunately, 5% for Taiko is just too low, even considering the kind of game.
