Media Create Sales: Week 50, 2012 (Dec 10 - Dec 16)

Not one original ip in the top 20 (I think, aside from nintendoland if that counts). 3DS has 10 of the top 20 releases, none of them are new either.

For the west it's call of duty and mario, for JPN it's mario/nintendo brands. What a stagnant industry this is.

Not saying the games aren't good but man, "safe bets" doesn't even cover it.

I just don't get the appeal of the 3ds, don't get me wrong, I have an xl, but it mostly sits in a drawer because it's like the wii. 3-4 great first party games and... nothing.

Vita is just technically on another level, but it just doesn't have that "safe bet" franchise like Nintendo.

One the other hand, we have Inazuma Eleven, which is a pretty recent IP, Run for Money which is a new IP, New Style Boutique which is almost a new IP, Kobito Zukan: Kobito Kansatsu Set which is a new IP, etc.

One thing that that I also want to point out is that even if you take away every single Mario or Monster Hunter game the 3DS still has multiple games that have outsold Vita's entire library.

Coming to mind without sales discrimination: Bravely Default, Kid Icarus Uprising, Fantasy Life, Pushmo, Guild 01, Beyond the Labyrinth, Dillon Western, Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure, Theathrym FF, Denpa Men, Rhythm Hunter: HarmoKnight...
Kid Icarus Uprising is not a new IP. It is a new game in the Kid Icarus serie. Not that it changes your point though, the 3DS has seen new IPs, i just had to mention it :)

EDIT: I fixed a typo.

I think it's more hilarious that people think same IP = same game regardless whether it's a different genre. Hell, I've seen more games with different IPs that play similarly.

In any case whining about "why x games aren't in top 20" shouldn't be allowed in a sales thread.

I know I know ;) but this game is so fresh despite its old roots that I like to think about it as a new IP. I remember when before its release everybody was uncertain about what to expect in term of sales due to the lack of comparison points... But technically yes, you're right.

Yeah, the gameplay is quite different. Uprising is also the first 3D entry in the serie.

There is a good chance that the majority of people playing Kid Icarus Uprising weren't even born when the NES game came out. It isn't like it's just another entry in a highly successful franchise.

True, but the intellectual property is Kid Icarus, that is not new. This doesnt necessarily mean that a new game cant be fresh and new. If that was the discussion earlier, then i can see what you mean though.

Changing the topic a bit, what happened to the eshop sales they used to hold? Was it a one-time only thing??

There was never mention of anything of the sort again, in Japan, America, or Europe.

so, Japan-GAF, could you please tell us why is Japan so desperate to play Animal Crossing:New Leaf?

why is this sequel as powerful?? what's in the game that japanese absolutely love and HAVE to have?

Afaik there's currently a sale on Metroid and Metroid II (they're VC games but I guess it still counts).

New portable AC title in over 6 years the previous one sold over 5 million and had anime movies. On top of that there is a lot of changes/new content in this one. There are bigger mysteries in terns of popularity for gaming.

What the hell is Kobito Zukan, anyway? It debuted at 26k back in July, and it's crawled up to 165k slowly and steadily. I found the game's boxart and WTF?

Funny, one of the core principles of economics is assuming the average person is rational. Otherwise patterns will make no sense.

There is a great deal of logic regarding the decline following the holiday season. Just because they behave in a different way than enthusiasts doesn't make them irroational and certainly isn't indicative of the human condition, please stop with the condescending and elitist attitude.

Predictability doesn't necessarily equal logic and rationality. I'm sorry if I expressed myself poorly and inadvertently upset you.

What I meant to express is that the subconscious runs the show when it comes to human thinking -- especially decision making. The conscious mind, the one that does all the critical thinking, actually has the final say is surprisingly little. I'm not talking just about economics here, I'm talking about brain science. That's what I meant when I called humans illogical creatures ^_^ No offense meant towards the humans out there.

Almost 100 hours in, winding down sessions to just the morning fossil dig, swim in the sea and peruse the shops, the evening has seen me switch on solely to go to KK Slider's Club 444, occasionally looking up to see one of my villagers fist bang to the village tune remix. This game is awesome on so many levels, works incredible portably and is as perfect as a digital purchase can be. Plus word-of-mouth (the facts there's so few second hand copies talks volumes) in Japan must surely work wonders for the game.

It's definitely gonna pass it next weeks thread in Famitsu.
I am not 100% optimistic like you but it would be a stunning performance if it indeed happens.

the_lascar also brought the good comparison info in his latest article (in french):

Last year, 3DS was in full beast mode in December. I hope it can pass the 1.5M bar for the month this year, which would be brilliant, especially since the console has not had a stellar line-up this time.

why is this sequel as powerful?? what's in the game that japanese absolutely love and HAVE to have?

Japanese gamers love grinding!

Monster hunter - Grind
Animal Crossing - Grind
Pokemon - Grind
Dragon Quest - Grind
Dragon Collection - Grind
Cerberus - Grind

Mario.... okay... falls apart here - but a well constructed grind game is definitely a key to Japanese peoples hearts.

One question I made yesterday but nodoby noticed it:

MC:
16./17. [NDS] Pokemon Black 2 / White 2 <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2012.06.23} (¥4.800) - 17.426 / 2.876.166 (+52%)

FAMITSU:
20./19. [NDS] Pokemon Black 2 / White 2 <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2012.06.23} (¥4.800) - 13.856 / 2.840.324 (+54%)

Will it reach the 3 million mark? How can we judge up to now this "move" to propose a proper sequel and not a "Grey" episode?

Do you think that we could see a Grey episode coming to 3DS next year, instead of (before) a proper sixth (???) generation new game?

You forgot about FF ;). Ironically though, NSMB2 seems to be totally unpopular, even though it's the Mario game with the greatest amount of grind :D.

Black / White 2 was made by the remake team, so I find it highly unlikely the main team has been spending all this time working on anything other than a new mainline game.

Black and white 2 is basically the third version. Im 90% sure there will be no gray version. Nintendo probably really wants that next gen pokemon for 3DS out ASAP.

Nothing there is a new IP.

I haven't found anything about Toushuchuu prior to this game! Kobitodsuzan, i have no idea lol.

It definitely will, it's just a matter of when. And I think it was a good decision, even if it doesn't change things too much sales-wise.

This summer we've seen Jikkyou Pawapuro doing much lower compared to last year.
There has been a little discussion about the reasons for this massive drop ( around 50%). IIRC, it has been proposed it was due to some problems with baseball itself in Japan ( I don't exactly remember what, muu maybe talked about it). But some other people said it was due to quality issues within the game, and others said it was due to people waiting for the Definitive Version, introduced in 2011. Well, this week Konami released Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2012 Ketteiban. Let's see how things went with Famitsu numbers

[PSP] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011 Ketteiban (Konami) - 29.470 / 29.470

The PS3 version, in 4 weeks, between Week 51, 2011 (19/12/11 - 25/12/11) and Week 2, 2012 (09/01/12 - 15/01/12), was at 44k, so this means the PS3 SKU should have had a 20-21k debut week, just outside of top 30.

24./00. [PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2012: Definitive Edition <SPT> (Konami) {2012.12.13} (¥6.980) - 12.365 / NEW
30./00. [PSP] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2012: Definitive Edition <SPT> (Konami) {2012.12.13} (¥5.250) - 9.786 / NEW

Not to have this conversation for the thousandth time, but what exactly did it have going for it?
Well, Vita had Final Fantasy X HD, Call of Duty, Uncharted, 3G and a price point right in line with 3DS' as well as beefy specs. That... was during E3 2011.

Mario is a grinder in disguise.

Nowadays it's kinda wrong to put Pokemon in grind. Rarely have to grind in BW2 at least.

AC is grind though? I thought the only time you'd grind is the one-time planting of a foreign fruit all over your village for easy money to pay off that stupid raccoon's loan.

Was Final Fantasy X HD 100% confirmed for Vita or was this just speculation?

MH Vita was never confirmed but people were assuming that was a sure thing.

His point was that it's a licensed game, so it comes in with an existing fanbase, just not in video games. Think it's the first video game with that license, though, yes.
