Media Create Sales: Week 52, 2015 (Dec 21 - Dec 27)

Btw despite the two SKU sales didn't grow that much, we're talking about something like 500 vs 600k LTD, was there even more people buying Fates than Awakening in the end if we take double dippers into account ?

There's no indication of the digital discounted version being counted that I'm aware of.

The sales grew, we have no idea how many second-SKU or third-SKU were sold after the fact as they were digital sales (directly through Nintendo) and discounted. People who wants both SKUs in physical, would have bought the SE and even that we don't know how it was counted.

So double-dipping here doesn't really work.

The real test for the squids starts mid January.
Personally I think they really need to do a cheaper Splatoon + other game bundle at the beginning of the year if they want to really keep momentum going into 2016.

What. The test is over. It passed. It's 1m+ on a dead console and improved that dead consoles baseline for over half a year. And a new ip as well.

Expecting anything else is just extra credit imo. There's only so much a game can do.

Did Aostia add some arguments? No, he just said "it will sell less in the west". So, why you reply to me?.

He did vaguely (western 3ds condition) and he said "probably" unlike you who said you were "pretty sure" and just threw predictions without anything backing it while it took me 2s to find three arguments more or less valids and 20s to write it down.

Anyway you get the point, I don't have anything else to add.

There's no indication of the digital discounted version being counted that I'm aware of.

Despite that I don't think that, even with the discounted digital version, it reached the famous 90% digital ratio.

My point is that, if the same people who bought Awakening bought Fates, there's only a 100k growth, and amongst the 100k there are most likely double dippers who didn't get the collector edition (which was heavily supply constraint) and maybe didn't want to go digital for the second game.

How many that is, I have no idea, which is what I was wondering about, could be 10k, could be 100k (and if so there would be no growth at all, just taking more money from the exact same fanbase)...

This particular game is very interesting because it used a business model we had never seen before (?) with three storylines contained in two different SKU and a DLC, a very limited collector SKU with the three storylines, an incentive to go digital for the 2nd storyline if you only bought one of the two basic SKU, and the third storyline being DLC only and released a few weeks after the retail release of the 3 others SKU.

(And I'm only taking about the main features, it already has the same kind of DLC Awakening already had back then)

It feels like Nintendo is experimeting so many things at once with this game and it would be very interesting to know how many people went for the discounted 2nd storyline, how many bought the two basic retail SKU, how many bought the 3rd storyline afterwards etc.

Unfortunately we will probably never get these data or at least not at the same level of detail I'm describing right now.

EDIT
People who wants both SKUs in physical, would have bought the SE and even that we don't know how it was counted.

As I mentionned above that one was
- Heavily supply constraint (like it was out of stock months before release if memory serves right, and while it was restocked a few times it was still very limited and constantly back in "out of stock" before release)
Here's its second week in Dengeki to give you an idea

27./05. [3DS] Fire Emblem Fates: Special Edition {Fire Emblem Fates: Black Kingdom Fire Emblem Fates: White Kingdom} (Nintendo) {2015.06.25} - 1.612 / 42.865 (-96%)

- Also it was pretty expansive (10k yens), some may have wanted to first buy a single version before deciding if it was worth it to play the second version (with the retail SKU that is).

"only a 100k growth" - we are talking about a tRPG series which had been selling 140k units on average for the previous 17 years. Also, the game had around 40k units on the eShop during its first month so the game sales are totally getting closer to 600k units.

If we're talking about number of players, special edition counts as 1 not 2, that basically cancels any digital copies iirc.

also, it's hilarious how you're trying to sandbag previous entries (which isn't even necessary really!) in order to make it look more impressive, literally every single game in the series sold more than 140k in Japan alone

Going from 500 to 600k is a 20% growth, that's pretty good, but if most of it comes from going dual version that's not an "usual" growth it's only getting more money out of the same fanbase, I may not have worded it properly but you're missing my point anyway.

Also I don't know in which world the Fire Emblem series was selling 140k units on average for the previous 17 years

EDIT: ^What theprodigy said, in spite of being factually wrong that was completely unnecessary.

My bad, I was looking at FW sales. Change 140k with 230k and the argument still holds (the average of all post-99 FE games).

Even if the entire growth from Awakening to Fates was due to double-dippers, that's still a lot of units sold for a franchise that has never been this big (at least, not in recent times because the first two or three entries sold really well). The IP can totally stabilize around 500k units and would be one of the biggest properties in terms of domestic sales (outside the big ones, Pokémon, Mario and so on), and one of the most surprising, given the genre.

Also, we know that Fates sold around 580k units (counting eShop sales), around 100k units more than Awakening. Then, how much the CE containing both storylines sold? How much DLC contaning the other storyline, and the third one sold?

Well yeah, I don't think anyone disagree with that.

My point about 3ds western sales is related to the decline in both hw and sw that the console saw this year. I think it is a fact and not an opinion. For this reason I think that FE will sell less in the west that awakaning but I also state that the 100k grow in japan will probably somehow balance it.
Plus I think that even if you look at an average sale of the previous around 300k in japan, both awakaning and fates sales are simply great and I think that awakaning western sales were great too for the franchise.
Even if fates increase was due to double dippers I would say that the double version probably aimed exactly at that, so...mission accomplished by IS.

It (the SE) is, however, less expensive than buying two retail copies of the game AND the third DLC, by a good chunk. I just don't think people were going out of their way (in large numbers, or % -meaningful) to spend more for what they could get for less through other means.

So, yes, supply constraints certainly affected it (we still don't know if it was counted as 1 or 2 copies) but I just don't see that many consumers going out to buy two versions in separate physical SKUs given the noticeable price disparity.

When considering eShop New Leaf's sales, the game is selling around the same of Wild World which shows the strength of the IP and how Nintendo can still pull those numbers even without DS-like hw sales.

New Super Mario Bros U. Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon will beat it soon anyway.

...I still don't get it.

Decline in hardware was smaller than in Japan, but that's because the New 3DS, and even so i don't think this really matter with the main point.

Decline in software? Huh?
That's could be true, but why this should impact Fire Emblem sales?

Software sales in Japan too were in decline. Did it damaged Fates sales? No...

Maybe i don't understand what you are trying to say.

Is that the highest first week sell-through percentage you have in your database?

I only know one other game with a first week sell-through percentage higher than 97, Gundam True Odyssey (97,20%)

All this according to Famitsu, because Media Create told us that Splatoon sold 97,33% of its first week shipment.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf shipments + download cards + eShop sales must have already reached 5 million units in Japan. We will officially know when Nintendo discloses the results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, but only if it manages to ship over a million units worldwide. Nintendo only lists those titles that at least sold (shipped) 1 million units during the fiscal year. Same for Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright / Conquest, I want to know how it did in Japan including everything.

3ds was and still is the hottest thing in japan despite a decline that seems more saturation than everything. In the west on the other side it seems to me that it was helped by the New release in terms of YoY but that after mid of the year the 3ds started to suffer in terms of active base buying games.
It could have been due also to a softer lineup while for example 16 could still see interesting releases especially in the rpg segment with Explorers bravely second yokai watch pokemon mistery and various Atlus games that, even if small in terms of single release, could build some momentum for the genre, helping Fe fates in terms of results.

But I have got the impression that 3ds momentum is past due in the west imho.

Btw I think that both awakaning and fates are successes and that fates increase in japan is significant as it is

3DS in the west hasn't had a tentpole title to rally around since Majora's Mask. Xenoblade, Happy Home Designer, Triforce Heroes, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon are decent mid-tier titles for off months, but they're certainly not event games for the system. I think Nintendo tried with Yokai Watch, but that doesn't exactly seem to have worked out so well. Hopefully Fire Emblem will be a tentpole title that primes the userbase for the last wave of games. Otherwise it's going to be pretty quiet aside from Pokemon.

The decline in Japan is bigger than in the west, and don't talk about saturation, because this could be true for the hardware, not software.

But the point remain that all this really means nothing when we talk about only one game.
Fates sales won't be influence by this.

What a bad day for Setsuna. That really should be out during a quieter release window.

Completely different genre and target audience with respect to the other two games + at this point PSV should be able to sustain three mid-tier (considering the context) releases in the same week.

The decline in Japan is bigger than in the west, and don't talk about saturation, because this could be true for the hardware, not software.

But the point remain that all this really means nothing when we talk about only one game.
Fates sales won't be influence by this.

Thx for the data. But it is false that the global situation of the active base doesnt affect the results of a single title. For example Zelda SS was seriously damaged by its late release in the life cycle of a console already dead with a small active base.
I still think that 3ds games could face issues in the west in 2016 even if as I said fates could still benefit from the general rpg lineup

Yeah, sorry, despite all the arguments from both sides, I really don't undertand this debate about FE Fates selling less than Awakening in the west. It had stock problems in the USA and was part of several promotions, as well as being heavily pushed in terms of marketing globally (partly thanks to Smash).
It will sell more, just not necessarily 2+M globally. FE is really more popular nowadays, and you can feel it, a lot of people are expecting it, unlike Awakening that was a surprise success.

Decline in software? Huh?
That's could be true, but why this should impact Fire Emblem sales?

Software sales in Japan too were in decline. Did it damaged Fates sales? No...

Maybe i don't understand what you are trying to say.
I know you weren't talking to me, but my projection is on the Western market being very toxic at retail as well with a continuing trend of extreme feast or famine:

Interesting stuff:

GH Live up big vs Oct
GTA just missed top 10
20 games in Nov 2014 >300k units; only 12 in Nov 2015

We also had three games with 2+ million that month which hadn't been seen since we were in the twilight of last generation.

Fire Emblem doesn't strike me as the type of title that's going to fall on the sales boost instead of sales decline side of this equation, especially in a month with XCOM 2, Street Fighter V, and Far Cry Primal sucking oxygen out of the room.

It's been three years of rapidly worsening conditions since the last game.

Now obviously if your title does get on the right side of this trend that's great and to huge benefit, but consumer interest in buying lots of software instead of pouring lots of money into content for less software seems to have gone down quite a bit. Why buy a new game when you can buy $60 of FIFA card packs is apparently the prevailing logic of the day.

It's unlikely to sell better in the West than Awakening. The 3DS's market was a lot healthier there in early 2013 than early 2016. Maybe day 1 due to Awakening's stock shortages.

The only way i can see Fates under Awakening in US ( and most likely EU too) could be NX that destrong it legs, since, not like in Japan, Awakening legs were very good, it sold like 117,000 unit first month and 370,000 by end of 2013.*

But if we talk about first week**, i'm pretty confident to say Fire Emblem Fates will do better than Awakening.

* Digital sales were 63,000 first month, no idea about LT.
** I said first week, not first NPD, even if i believe first NPD should still be bigger, i don't think is sure because first NPD for Awakening was 4 weeks, Fates will be only 2 weeks.

Wait what? Fates sold better than awakaning in japan and it is still selling (few copies obviously)
I think we know it already sold 80k more plus a bigger digital debut...

Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami stated in a blog post that the original idea was an SRPG that was closer to the idea of SMT characters and FE characters meeting each other than how it turned out when they leaned for the entertainment concept.

I knew it! Codename STEAM was made from the what was left of the original idea of SMT x FE! The gameplay was down solid, but you know, SMT x FE went another direction. So why let good gameplay go to waste? (enter comment about waste here)
Seriously, swat the STEAM art with a groovy Kazuma Kaneko skin mixed in with practically the same music and watch that disliked enemy move times become a proper SMT moody atmospheric tension builder.
...So I'd like to imagine.

I speculated that the reason they were throwing so much at PS4 in Japan is because FF still gets around a third of its sales from Japan(and that's at a nadir).

So I avoided commenting on this part earlier since we were in a different discussion, but I actually think you're overthinking this one a bit.

As far as I can tell, Matsuda's strategy for the "HD Games" (console/handheld/digital downloadable) segment of their business is to try to retread the glory days.

During that era they released a whole bunch of console games, heavily in the RPG genre with some experiments outside of it, and then had a selection of handheld titles to appeal to various niches and/or younger audiences as well.

If we look at their current line-up, it's pretty much the same. We have flagship console titles (FF15, FF7R, KH3, DQ11), mid-tier console titles (Nier 2, SO5, DQH, DQB, Dissidia), and handheld titles (DQ11, WoFF, SaGa, Setsuna, SD).

What's different is that the platform situations has changed, so their handheld titles show up on console with the West (or local console enthusiasts) in mind, and PC versions are becoming more common as well.

During their heyday it's worth keeping in mind that Square Enix was a global publisher, and that was even before they had Eidos, so if their decisions don't always make sense locally, taking a step back and looking worldwide is a good option. That Seiken Densetsu is getting a late PS4 port suggests they're not doing that for domestic market reasons.

While a bit out of scope in a Media Create thread, this also applies to their Western series. The design document for the new Hitman game is basically "Try to make old fans happy again."

Now, the Smart Device/PC Browser division and the Online/MMO division operate differently, but those are fundamentally different markets.

...Amazing week for all console all considering, and so happy about 3DS at +20m LT.
It's the 5° console to break this result, with DS, GBA, PS2, and PSP.

I'm fairly certain the GBA didn't reach 20m. I remember it ending its life at 17-something million.
Highly likely the GB/C are way over 20 million though.
