Megatokyo: The Visual Novel Kickstarter ($100k funded)

I don't think a middle schooler would have any hope of understanding MT's story as it is now... it's quite complex, to say the least. And given how much he references anime fandom and Japan, some stuff won't make sense without understanding that external material, either.

If it's similar now to how it has been in the past, it is merely referential without being reflective in the slightest. I mean I love anime and would probably "get" most of the references, but I doubt I could go back.

I don't know how long ago you stopped reading, but there is a definite change once we start getting brought "between the pages"... and also the revelations about what Miho's character actually is (or is perceived to be by her "fans") is quite interesting, for example. It's not "just a reference". It never was, though. Not since it started being a serious series and not just a gag webcomic, that is.

Who are the people that have pledged their lives income to support Megatokyo through purchasing all the shitty merchandise and so forth?

WHO ARE THEY? WHY?!

I really liked that comic back in the day and I forget why I fell off reading it

should go back and catch up but the backlog of comics by now has to be insane :-s

I'm not surprised that Megatokyo is still limping along, but that it's evidently not limping so much as chugging.

$100,000 in THREE DAYS for a VISUAL NOVEL. Hot damn.

I had no idea this was going on, props on his successes though I'm not really a fan of the art...but wtf do I know, his comic's up and running and mine isn't. Lol

Oh my god, I just realized I bought the first book when it first came out.

it might be in my garage somewhere

I have the first four of them sitting on my shelf next to a "Madman Manga Sampler" and Volume 4 of Naruto.

Hell, maybe one day a fever will strike me as I stride through Kinokuniya and I'll pick up the next 2...

I'd rather watch paint dry than play this. He couldn't even write a decent webcomic 10 years ago once the guy who was actually funny (Largo?) bailed out.

Whoa, I haven't read Megatokyo since, what, middle school? Absolutely amazed that it's still an active thing.

And they still have l33t speak in their website title?!

Well, I have some fond memories of it, so I'm glad to see it's doing well.

I'm glad he's able to do this. I was a big fan of Megatokyo for a while, I have I think the first three volumes (plus both versions of the first, of course), but I've stopped reading it completely and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to get into it again. I can't imagine playing the game.

But a visual novel makes perfect sense for the series, and I bet Fred's going to enjoy having his work in a game as much as his current fanbase will. So I guess I'm happy the Kickstarter's doing well.

That worked for Oyasumi Punpun.

PunPun doesn't have a dot for a nose! He has a... beak-like thing.

The reason why I eventually stopped was because after Largo left it just wasn't the same (he appealed to my 13 year old sensibilities). I like to think that Largo leaving Megatokyo was the single reason that l33t sp33k fell out of style for the entire internet (even if that is not true, it is true to me.)

Wow.

The 8-bit theatre guy is still also updating although in a new comic.

It is amazing how he managed to both keep squeezing jokes out of "fighter is an idiot, BM is evil, WM is Liz from Garfield, Garland uses the princess as his therapist," etc. and move the characters through the story of the game so slowly for over a decade

Rodney certainly had his finger a bit more on the pulse and his leaving sort of shelved everything into some weird pseduo-love story crap where every 16 year old in japan wanted to give it up to Piro but sad girls in snow and whatever the fuck

Just give me my m@g1c b33r and shit back.

God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. Yet his shadow still looms. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent?

BioWare should kickstart Dragon Age 4.

Stretch goal for $4m: the Elves can in no way be gay. They will reject you if you try to screw them.

They'd make that in a day.

Put me in the "I was a big fan of Mega Tokyo" wagon, funny to see I'm not the only one with similar feelings. I really loved for a while and then I just forgot about it for some reason I can't recall.

I may back this to please my old me.

I went and read through the most recent comics. I think his inability to draw faces is surpassed only by his inability to draw hands. Also, what's with the release schedule? It appears this is the artist/author's full-time job and yet the strips are released very inconsistently. Some of these web comic strips are posted weeks or months apart. Why would a comic with so little effort put into the art, in both the long and short term, have so many fans? I guess he's living the dream, and his fans are living vicariously through him.

EDIT: I also got a chuckle out of the "characters" page on the website which has only this posted:

"All right, all right! I still don't feel like finishing these sections, but whatever (grumble)...
piro - fall 2007

Believe it or not, the (page) is in production and will be incorporated into the new site launch. We just are not including them as part of this beta test (because they still need some work)."

Please take my money sir!

This is an accurate post, seriously. Even Largo the character fell victim to becoming a subject of love story drama (though admittedly that was much more interesting than when it happened to Piro).

Also, r3nt-a-z1ll4 and n1nj4s. Making powerful b0x3s (gaming rigs). Largo represented pretty much everything that was cool.

I need a single word that combines both 'Absolutely disgusting' and 'Fucking why'.

This almost makes me more upset than the 'Truth and Trolls' scam kickstarter

This.

Kinda sad the guy's art never got any better.

Yeah eh. I've read through a few years of various webcomics before and usually every once in a while you see the art style improve and get more detailed as his style evolves. This is just bad before and bad now.

Can't believe it has any pledges to be honest.

Webcomics and their fans do not really make any sense most of the time.
Shit like this and Dominic Deegan really make you wonder

Yeah, it's rather pitiful. The only hope for this project getting finished is the fact that multiple people are involved, presumably all more productive than he.

._____________.
I don't even know what to think. I forgot this even existed.

So will it be inked and colored all professional like or pencilled with a total disregard for backgrounds

it's actually pretty impressive that his art hasn't improved at all
i don't mind a rough sketchy style (i actually love it) but his is just not very good at all and it looks like he hasn't even tried to improve anything in the last eight or so year since i last saw the comic (and be aware that there is plenty of room to improve)

I'll just go watch Homestar Runner videos for now and hope they're still good.

He clearly puts a lot of effort into the art, and I think it's pretty good overall. Apparently a lot of people here disagree, for whatever reason, but I've always thought MT looked good... okay, maybe not the hands, but overall. And it's improved a lot since the early parts of the series, as is very clear when you look at it. But yeah, it's reasonably good now.

You are right that he's lucky to have such a lasting fanbase, though. I mean, I do think that the story is more interesting than almost all webcomics, so that is deserved (I am one of those people who's kept following it for a very long time now, after all!), but he has definitely been lucky. Lots of webcomics have never achieved anywhere near MT's level of success despite also being good and updating much more regularly, though MT always has been one of my favorites.

As for why there are so many delays, there are a lot of reasons, some good, others not. Whenever he makes a book, that puts in a long delay as he works on redoing stuff for the book. Health issues (his recently, his wifes' before that) have delayed things. Surely having a child didn't help. He's slow at drawing too, I believe, so pages take quite a while to do -- and he's a perfectionist, so he often ditches completed panels of pages when he doesn't like them, puts huge amounts of detail into backgrounds that you can barely see at the resolution that the comics are posted at (he draws it much larger), etc. It doesn't help that he's often working on the script of each page until the last second too. :p

Also, it seems that he frequently prioritizes working on stuff for the store over making new pages. You know, fulfilling orders, having new stuff to sell there, etc. That's important of course because that's where the money (for him) is coming from.

I have to guess that he's left those pages there as much as a joke as anything... I mean, everyone knows that they'll never happen. :p Anyway, if you want those details, there's a pretty solid MT wiki out there.

As for this though, I am worried about the game being finished of course, but with money like this behind it, I think that'll push him to prioritize it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it leads to few comics being posted for a while while he's working on this, though, of course. Ah well.

Yeah, his art hasn't changed one iota from the first comic to the last. Seriously?

Maybe we ought to move onto discussing just the comic and the VN, I think we've had enough haterade to last the entire duration of the VN's development.
