I wonder how it stacks up against the Animated Series because the Animated Series is baller

/edit Man, I wish this series had some decent animation though

It's tracking to $75m over the four-day weekend.

As always, anecdotal evidence doesnt mean everything.

Well, tracking news isn't 'anecdotal.' There have been some pretty bad indicators; awful midnight numbers, low search interest, and the budget itself contrasted with the opening numbers. Example:

A lot is riding on this weekend’s worldwide totals for Will Smith (back at cineplexes after a 4-year hiatus) and Sony Pictures (reviving a decade-long dormant franchise). Yes, Sony’s new #1 Memorial Weekend movie Men In Black 3 will beat Marvel’s The Avengers which is starting its 4th week in domestic release. But I can’t ignore rival studio claims that the 3D scifi laugher is not looking as strong as Hollywood thought for North America or overseas. At first this just seemed to be sour grapes. But now it’s clear that Barry Sonnenfeld’s/Rick Baker’s latest playing in very wide release at 4,248 theaters looks to open in the range of $18M today and only $75M for the 4-day holiday. That’s not anywhere close to the $90M which Hollywood thought this popular franchise could open its threequel. This makes the 5th major studio release that has underperformed at the start of Summer 2012, though not as badly as the others. Even overseas, depending on who’s analyzing, MIB3 is a mixed bag.

My Sony sources are quick to point out that it opened bigger in Russia than The Avengers. But rival studios tell me that “despite great tracking internationally, their midweek openings in Australia, France, Korea, and Germany are mostly behind Battleship or John Carter. Weird.” Those are two comps which no studio wants to hear in the same sentence with its summer blockbuster. The reason this is a problem is that MIB3 was very expensive to make. The time travel elements of Etan Cohen’s script had to be re-worked by Jeff Nathanson who needed more time to pull off the tricky plot device. So the film shut down for about six weeks, which is a rarity for a major tentpole. That caused the cost to skyrocket from a range of $225M (which is what Sony claims as the budget) to $300M (which is what rival studios say it really was). Between that and all the gross profit participants, every dollar counts.

$300 million dollar budget (let's just be nice and say $270), $75 million opening during Memorial Week, undertracking everywhere... I guess I can't call it a bomb outright perhaps, but certainly it's not positive.

I somehow feel this universe in under used. The premice, the concept, everything should be here to make a good flick.

But somehow, they never go deep enough or always tend in the wrong direction. We want space alien regulation. Not time travels and earth being invaded... I want something more like the first one, actual investigations, guns, fun gadgets. I think MIB 3 failed a lot here

Although, the scene in MIB3 in the Factory was brillant. Also Griffin.

Watched it here in china today. First 3d film ive ever seen here lol. Was fun. I don't know if the 3d is decent, or because I've played a bunch of 3ds, but 3D was ok. Didn't blow my mind, but it made some of the scenes pop in a good way.

For the most part I enjoyed it. The final 'revelation' about K's past was underwhelming... and it kinda just ends, just cause.

But like with 2 it still felt like a high budget tv premiere vs movie in... scope? It is about the same length as a 2hr premiere.

No red button moment is a disappointment as well. Going from Mercedes to Ford.. focus(?). Budget cuts at MiB?

There were about 30 people in a 9:45 3D showing last night at my theater.

I enjoyed the movie for what it was. I heart Will Smith. O.K. hahahahahah

It was ok, not a bad movie by any means. I think its worth seeing once, but I have no desire to buy it when it comes out.

Still gonna make 500 million WW+ (OS gross to be piggybacked by China and Russia it looks like). Europe's nice weather is killing the box office over there right now, so we'll have to see if MIB recovers next weekend with soft drops.

Might not be profitable at 500 million or so, but it's not gonna be much of a money loser either once you factor in the home video and merchandise sales.

Yeah, I'm sure with the DVD/Blu-Ray sales it'll make even a little profit, perhaps. I just think this will be the end of the franchise anyway, it's a fairly muted response.

That time jump scene was so much fun to watch, but honestly this would be a good way to end the series. I don't think there's much more insight I can gain into these characters.

Clearly you were not just going by tracking data;
boy this film is going to be some bomb, early forecasts don't look positive, the GAF topic is dead and my movie theatre was dead. Will Smith pull at the box office finally really dead?
Hence my response.

As for the rest of your post; awful midnight numbers = already addressed in the BO thread, they're fine. Low search interest != low BO gross, I already counter proved it in this thread. As for the tracking numbers, the results are exactly in line with pre-opening tracking numbers. Besides that Nikki Finke (deadline.com) has a habit of inflating things. And you left out the good part ..

Overseas, Sony claimed “some fantastic new openings around the world, led by Russia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia. Highlights: Russia was ”a sensational, dominant #1 opening grossing $3.5M, accounting for 85% of the box office. This is bigger than the opening day of Avengers and is Sony’s biggest opening day of all time.” In line with Russia’s opening, Ukraine scored a big $314K and headed to finish with 3 times the opening weekend box office of Mission: Impossible 4. United Arab Emirates took in $427K, tracking 50% above Will Smith’s Hancock. Latin America also tracked ahead of M:I4’s opening weekend with the big markets of Brazil and Mexico opening tonight. Yesterday Argentina took in $217K, Peru $134K, and Chile $62K. In Asia, Sony had strong openings in Malaysia $369K, Hong Kong $341K, and Singapore $290K which should end up above M:I4 as well as Pirates 4 come Sunday.

The fact that this film is even remotely enjoyable, never mind a fun romp people actually like, could be one of the biggest shocks of the summer.

The production on this was so troubled that at one point Sony had considered pulling the plug on the whole thing mid production.

Though I'll certainly go and check it out I'm still a little baffled as to why Sony wanted a third MIB film. The second one was a disaster and apart from being one of Sony's few 'studio owned franchises' it's never been a big shifter of merchandise etc....

Going in with no expectations I enjoyed this more then The Avengers. Some of the jokes fell flat and the CG was pretty bad but Brolin and Smith were fantastic and the end of the movie really brought it together. And on top of that, the picture stopped working halfway through so I now have a free movie ticket for Prometheus.

I get the feeling this was done to ensure they maintain a good relationship with Will Smith who seems to be wanting to get back into the game. That and they mentioned that focus groups had reacted positively to the idea of a MIB3 having fondly looked upon the series in a favorable light. Apparently they felt enough time had elapsed that people would forget the badness of MIB2. Again, probably not going to lose any money in the process and they get to put Will Smith back in the spotlight.

I already watched tons of schlock this last month from Hunger Games to The Avengers to Mirror Mirror. More kentucky fried crap isn't going to bother me. Should be fun tonight.

I know that Sony have a big money deal with Will Smith that has stretched back years but it just seems that Sony are never sure what to do with him. Of course they have the Bad Boys and Men In Black films but when it comes to the next stage of Will Smith's career it's as if they are out of ideas.

Hancock is a great example of Sony trying to crowbar Will Smith into a trend. Hancock infamously started life as an R rated superhero script that had Michael Mann (IIRC) attached to direct it at one point.

Once it goes through the 'design by committee' process it becomes a weird action comedy that suggests an interracial relationship that it's terrified of exploring in any meaningful way.

I thought I Am Legend was a great Will Smith vehicle but that was from Warners and instead Sony were developing the board game RISK as a Will Smith vehicle. Of course that was before the Battleship debacle killed that stone dead.

I'm shocked at how good this movie was. It's not gonna be one of my favorite movies ever, but it was genuinely fun.

I like that they didn't regurgitate a bunch of jokes from the first movie. That was the worst part of the second movie. Hey, remember the talking pug? That was hilarious! We're gonna make an entire subplot about that character now! And the coffee worms? Weren't they great? They get way more screen time! And let's have a total rehash of the Tony Shalhoub scene!

This movie manages to acknowledge and respect the original without relying on it.

I also like how they didn't try to go for BIGGER AND MORE EXPLOSIVE like so many sequels, but instead made a relatively smaller movie that was more about the characters and the universe. The world was still at stake, sure, but the focus was on letting Will Smith be Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones be Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin be Tommy Lee Jones.

I'm glad this came out. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the first Men in Black, and how much I like Will Smith when he's in a good movie.

Sony's product placement was pretty schlocky. Not only do you get Smith playing a PS3 but they even had a kid using the Move. And I didn't see it but someone in the movie probably had a vita.

Does it top Will using a Dual Shock to control his car in MiB2, or the MiB headquarters having a Sprint Store for no reason?

One of the few franchises that Sony has, yet they won't release a Ghostbusters sequel. The budget would have to be less than is with a similar return.

BUt the controller pops out and J says "Ain't you never had a GameBoy?", which I always thought was reaaaaally weird.

Funny story. The worst scene in the movie is when Agent O gives her alien speech and awkwardly screeches for way too long a time. Some little girl with the best comic timing I've heard blurt out "Mommy, that lady is really weird." The whole theater burst out laughing. If fact that girl got the biggest laugh of all.

We just got back from the theater. It was really good. Not sure where the hate is coming from. The ending was great, too. I can see why some folks are saying its better than the original. I'm not sure I agree with that, but I don't exactly disagree either.

We saw it in 3D too. It was a good, unobtrusive use of the effect. There weren't any corny shots of things flying at your face or anything like that. It was mostly just used to give a sense of depth, which is how I likes it.

This is pretty much the quintessential "rental" for me. Vaguely entertaining but I'll have completely forgotten it by Monday.

Absolutely nowhere near as good as the original. I actually like this less the more I think about it lol.

I saw this today, was actually pretty good I found. I recall leaving the theatre after the second one thinking "how could they mess up so bad" but this one was enjoyable. I even found the 3d was decent considering it was a post job.

I just watched it today not in 3D. I wasn't expecting much and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I liked how the main bad guy reminds me so much of Macho Man Randy Savage in the looks department. It's definitely a fun flick I'd watch again when I have nothing else to watch.

Yeah, it was feel good blockbuster. Solid movie, maybe better than the 1st one, liked the way it ties eveything together.

People really saying its a bad film? I really liked it. And the only product placement I noticed was Will holding the ps3 controller while playing some video game. I don't think they mentioned what system it was or what he was playing. Not bad at all imo.

Saw it last night not knowing what to expect, saw a trailer like once. It was alright, nothing amazing but it kept me amused.

They zoomed in on 'Ford' a few times.

yes there were. quite a few actually :P

god i hate all current 3D technology

I hate every movie that does that "OMG 3D IN YOUR FACE"-shit.

except Harold & Kumar Christmas, because they mock it themselves.

and it has Danny Trejo in a christmas-sweater, you cannot hate a movie that has Danny Trejo in a Christmas-sweater

Mmm, I didn't really dwell too much on the product placement, aside from the whole Ford Taurus thing (made that shot of the car leaving seem like a commercial).

But on the whole, this movie was worth seeing. A nice cap on the MIB series, and surprisingly laid-back compared to the last one.

Considering that was his last film before Seven Pounds, that is part of his recent output, I'd say.
If you think Ali, I am Legend, Pursuit of Happiness and Seven Pounds don't show an extremely talented actor who is being wasted in Hancock and MIB3, I don't know what to say. And Seven Pounds came out 4 years ago.

Is this worth seeing in 3-D or IMAX? Or should I just save the money and watch it regularly?

Just got back from seeing it earlier today. i really enjoyed it and it was a definite step up from the last film. Will Smith was his usual bankable self and TLJ is always solid. I especially liked the clairvoyant alien and his arc. I also LOVED the whole ending sequence. Who would have thought a tip would be the catalyst for the end of the world XD

Alright film not even in the same ballpark as the first but enough of an apology for the second.

"Should've been here for the Zeronion migration in 1968... I guess you weren't even alive in 68."

Lol

It was an acceptable film, but I would have rather waited to watch it on DVD since it came away more like Lion King 2 than, say, Toy Story 2/3. It was better than MIB2.

Well walking out the theatre my only real reaction was a giant shrug.

Not good, not bad, just kind of there.
