Men with long hair still looked down upon?

It doesn't matter what your opinion is on this.

It only matters what other people think. Whether their opinion is right or wrong doesn't really matter tbh. That's the reality of the situation.

It really shouldn't matter... and in a perfect world it wouldn't... but it does depending on the job he was applying for.

I am a training manager and when I got my tattoo sleeves the first thing my manager said was, "Well you have to wear long sleeves now all the time...". I don't, (Unless my manager sits in on anything I am doing) and nobody bats an eyelid.

However, one of my coordinators does have long hair, plays in a metal band etc. and all the feedback forms always state things like 'At first I felt intimidated, but he was really nice' or 'For a man who looks like a hippy he knows what he is talking about'.

The amount of times I have had to defend his appearance to my manager is crazy, because my manager believes we should look professional and having long hair isn't considered such. This is the same for women as well may I add, they are asked (not forced) to have their hair tied up or cut if it is longer than their shoulders. I don't enforce these things as it shouldn't effect peoples training ability but the stigma is very much there!

Its sad that in today's day and age short men are still looked down upon

It shouldn't matter these days, and I feel bad for your friend if he actually keeps it in a 'pristine' condition as you say, but unfortunately conservative values + the hygiene thing still rule here. Could he bun it tidily in the back, perhaps?

For the hygiene thing, I'm sorry to say that I have to agree based on what I've witnessed the majority of the time. I've seen tons of men with long hair and 95% of the time it's...gross. Greasy, frayed, stray bits everywhere, uncombed, etc. It's either down or yanked back into a tatty ponytail which is appealing to no one. I've always wondered why guys bother to grow their hair long and then do nothing with it. They've helped ruin it for your friend, OP!

Most of the time it looks terrible(I mean hygiene wise) so places just universally ban it.

Going to say this. I used to have long hair back in my college days but once I cut it I gained instant respect from people. I think it just has to do with how it looks. Same with beards. I was just talking to my wife about it the other day about how much I hate shaving but then started to go down a rabbit hole of why beards ended up having the whole wrap they do.

Shaving was not a day to day thing back in the old days. I mean, you could use a straight razor by yourself but who had the time and who cared back then when you were working from sunrise to sunset. Not to mention you'd have to go to a barber to get it done right and that'd be a once a week thing, where the other half of the time it's growing back and you got that hair growing in.

So as time went on shaving became more common place with the turn of the industrial revolution and eventually adopted fully with the advent of disposable razors. That would then stand to reason why people who don't shave are seen as unkept because they have access to shaving but rather don't do it because they are lazy and like the bearded look. Heck, if I could pull it off I'd love to do a beard but mine doesn't grow in all the way, but I get why it has a stigma. Same for men with long hair. It just is a sociological perception that men look dirty with longer hair.

It is called shampoo+conditioner. I have shoulder length hair. I pull it back into a ponytail to keep it out of my face. I guess I am just a disgusting slob that "no one" will ever find attractive. I will choose to believe the people around me, rather than someone on the Internet.

She didn't say anything at all to suggest that. I don't think anyone here seriously has a Vendetta against long haired men, just stating the unfortunate reality.

Where do you live? Where I am beards are largely back in style

Why though ? People lie to loved ones all the time . Do I look fat in this ? How do you like my cupcakes? Does my long hair look stupid?

Conversely , random stranger online has no vested interest in your feelings and will tell it to you straight . I'd believe the stranger , but you do you .

So, what is this supposed to mean then.

As someone who's probably going to be working in a boring financial/analytics firm where I'll probably have to look clean cut.....I'm disappointed I'll never get to grow my hair out and try a wacky style. It's something I've wanted to do just once.

If this doesn't apply to you, why are you taking it personally?

Cause its unprofessional looking. Just like i wouldnt wear flip flops to an interview.

My boss wore flip flops when I first had the interview lmao

Guess you can get away with that kind of shit when you run the place

? If you take care of yours, then you're not what I'm talking about at all. Misread, perhaps? I like long hair on guys just fine when it's cared for.

well if you're good looking you could pretty much pull anything off

cue flood of pics of good looking celebrities with shit haircuts

It all comes down to how well you look after it, and the rest of your appearance as well. If it's just some fuckin frizzy waist length metal dude hair then yeah it's gonna make you look lazy and like you don't care.

The war on men :(

Long hair on men is acceptable from teenage years (14-15) to a max of about 25 (and even thats pushing it). Once you get past that age, and especially if you have long hair in your 30's, it just seems sad and kinda creepy. Like honestly having a full head of long hair in your 30s is as bad as being balding with a comb over. It looks kinda sad, like youre still trying to be a rebel but hold down that 9-5. The only people who can get away with it are actual, real rock stars. Not people who play in Metallica cover bands on the weekend but work in an office Mon-Fri.

I don't think it's looked down upon, but it's a specific look that doesn't suit most men.

But in a particular work environment there probably is the expectation that men should keep it short as it's more presentable.

EDIT - it's waist-length pseudo-metal hair? Yeah, I'm not a fan of that look and I'm not surprised employers would have that reaction.

Reading this thread, i had no idea that people had such strong opinions about guys hair. Tbh i am suprised by some of these negative comments and general attitude. Not even sure are you all serious.

I've always liked long hair but never had one myself. Trying to grow it right now, about shoulder lenght would be ok. It's just a thing i want to do just once, if i dont like it or if it starts to look trashy, i cut it. Any tips for it (other than dont do it)?.

It seems to still happen. Tattoos are still considered bad by a lot of employers as well, even if they are hidden by your outfit most of the time.

I personally like men with long hair. Even if I didn't, it is none of my business what they do with their hair and it sure as hell isn't of the business of employers. Hire someone for what they do, not for how they look.

Just go for that clean and slick look like Brad Pitt in this picture and no one will treat you any different.

If you can afford it I can recommend you a ceratin treatment if your hair grows out messy. It does wonders.

Past the shoulder, on dudes, and you are guaranteed to look terrible.

Wow, are you actually serious with this shit?

I have long hair, always had them for 30+ years and I thought that in 2017 we were past this load of crap?

So based on your logic, you simply can't have long hair because "you look unprofessional"?
Fuck me.

But women can have any type of hair they want, right?

Not generalising at all. Not even a bit.

Yeah, How dare people expect you look professional in a professional environment. /s

Like it or not appearance has always and will always matter. It's the very first thing people will notice about you, when you work for a company you are representing that company.

Fuck that company then.

I have my hair a little below the shoulders. Sometimes I have them open, sometimes a knot, sometimes a ponytail. A lot of good looking men out there with long hair that look professional. So boiling it down to "long hair is a no go" tells me that company is not the right palce to work.

And about the hygiene thing. I have seen plenty of men with very short or half-bald hair who looked gross as well. Short hair is not a requirement for well kempt hair.

You have no idea how difficult frays and stray bits are to get rid of. Anyway, men aren't taught how to care for or wear their hair because there's less expectation placed on men's looks compared to women.

As someone who's usually too cheap/lazy to get their hair cut, cut it to get the job (even when well kept, guys don't look hygienic with long hair) and let it grow back afterwards (unless you work in food service, they usually don't care once you already work there).

I mean, I agree that men aren't conditioned to care for their hair as much as women, but pretty much all women deal with fray, frizzy, and stray bits of hair constantly. So, yeah, I'm darn aware of what goes into it. And as far as teaching goes, it usually comes down to effort and trial and error. There's no special 'lesson' we're given as kids besides keep it clean and brushed.

It's one of those things that makes 0 sense.

People should be able to have whatever hair style they like as long as it looks good.

There is nothing wrong with long hair on men if it's looked after correctly.

Sorry, that should have read "for me".

Keeping it clean and brushed is rarely enough in my experience.

Oh, I'm with you. Living in the UK now has made my hair a nightmare with the constant drizzle. Have you tried Argan Oil? That + Aussie repair S&C helps a lot.

well if you're good looking you could pretty much pull anything off

Pretty much this. Good looking man can pull off longer hair and no one would really bat an eye. Although with quite a few celebs now having about shoulder length hair, at least that much seems to be something most people wouldn't care about. When it goes down to your back or longer it just doesn't look good.

Ehhh, greasiness can certainly become an issue but I've found people are too quick to throw that term around. It's perfectly healthy to only shampoo long hair once a week while just conditioning and body washing the other days. My hair is thick as hell so my prime is from the day I shampoo to between Day 3-4. Shampooing your hair every day is horrible for it.

Unfortunately my hair is so thick that it tends to dread within those three or four days so I need to brush the shit out of that ish almost every day. And use entirely too much hair detangler product in the process
