Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

Anyone in the GVRD find this? I am going to look for this tomorrow but would like to know if people have found it to narrow my search.

Why is putting Meryls codec on the back of the box / in the manual so funny? It's a game crippling bug if it wasn't included in the first place.

I used to manage an EB here in Kelowna years ago, I feel your pain.

I've actually been thinking about writing an extensive editorial about how absolutely terrible it is in so many ways. But I think it's been done before and I don't think anybody actually cares who hasn't been in the same position.

If you havn't played the game, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Edit: I wonder how the Psycho Mantis fight is going to work for PS3 owners. :lol

This could go in the stupid gaming mistakes thread but the first time I played Psycho Mantis I never put my controller in the other port. I beat him, but it did take a long time.

my CE for DMC4 had its manual clip snapped off :|

got it replaced, that was was snapped off too :(

DS3 says hi, but its gonna be lame for sixaxis only people, especially considering the whole "lay your controller on the floor" scene.

I remember laughing my ass off when playing through that scene in Twin Snakes using my Wavebird. :lol

All those rumble gimmicks in the game are turned off if you play with a non-vibrating controller. It just skips it.

It amazes me how many of you are forgetting a lot of stuff from MGS1

I remember the Ocelot torture scene in TTS where he points directly at the camera and talks about how he'll know if you're using auto-fire. Apparently, a friend of mine tried auto-fire on the PS1 original, and didn't get found out. At the time, I had two off-brand GCN controllers that had auto-fire, so I tried, and he figured me out and I got the gameover screen :lol

wow, really? I never tried playing MGS1 with my original PS1 controller, so I had no idea. I always used my later-purchased dualshock, and then later again on my dualshock 2 just for the hell of it (Yes, I played MGS1 on my PS1, even though I had a PS2).

I also had an auto-fire capable controller the first time I played it and it didnt detect it either. Breezed through that one! :D

fuck no, and that pisses me off because the EB I preordered it at fucked up and didn't give me my fucking Saga DVD.

The saga vol 1 dvd was a preorder bonus that was supposed to be handed out with the purchase of the game. Fucking dumbasses gave that shit away beforehand.

Fucking pieces of shit.
It's dumb shit like this that fuels my hatred of the chain.
Which is why i fuck with them so often.
example: If i ever see a Gamestop store in the mall or whatever i stop by and get in character to ask the release date for Lego Halo. they act like they know what i'm talking about then fail their database search, i then talk shit about their establishment and tell em' i'm goin' to EB Games.

Is the outer box hard cardboard or is it like Subsistence LE and just thin paper cardboard?

and WTF amazon...not shipping for a few days? I pre-ordered, it should have already been delivered.

dude, that's kinda fail.

First of all, dumb employees are dumb employees. That's one thing, but you do realize that Gamestop owns EB, right? Its not a merger thing, either. Its a takeover. The only reason why some stores still carry their original store title is because another gamestop opened up nearby it (like in this one mall I know, they have like 2 gamestops and a funcoland, with one of the gamestops having still been called "EB" until recently, and that's because the other GS that used to be an EB is actually placed outside of the mall proper)

Oh the irony!

Was i a bit too dry? :p

It's like the episode in Seinfeld when Elaine goes to that other store when it's run by the same owner

Got my copy. Cost me 12 bucks since I traded in Umbrella Chronicles while it's still worth 20 bucks there (I couldn't even get that much on ebay..)

I was wondering why I hadn't heard of this until now, I played MGS with the regular PS controller. Can someone explain this event to me?

IIRC, before the fight sequence with Mantis, he asks you to put the controller on the floor and he "moves it with his mind"... which doesn't quite work so well if you have a carpeted floor. :lol

Also I don't quite remember where in the game it takes place, but Naomi stimulates some nanomachines or something to "massage" your arms.

Sorry for my lack of complete details, it's been quite a while since I played through it. I don't remember the Naomi massages in Twin Snakes.

Oh alright, damn me and my lack of Dualshock back then.

I have played the game, got it on release actually and still own it. I just don't understand why it's funny. It'd be stupid to not have it there.

Gotcha. I'd misunderstood your post.

I don't think anybody thought it was like "ha-ha" funny... it's just a cool thing to see.

Hey guys. When I get my copy of Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection I am going to take if over to my friends house and let him play it and since he have never played a MGS game before which order do you think he should playing? MGS3,MGS1 then MGS2?

Just play them in order of release. If Kojima wanted you to play through the sequences in MGS3 first, it would have been released in that order.

god, this gets asked all of the time. Play 3 without any knowledge of 1 and you won't get some of the jokes, allusions, characters, etc.

That depends on the specific impact you wish to achieve.
Playing MGS3 should always be the default answer for many reasons but if your friend doesn't have a problem with a lesser audiovisual experience i'd recommend you have your friend try just the beginning of MGS1 in order to quickly understand MGS as a series, and the basic controls too.

You'll need a ps1 memory card if your playing on a ps2 but their're dirt cheap anyhow so don't worry about it.

Luckily I still have all 3 of my memory cards even thought I don't have my old ps1 so I'm good to go once I pick up my copy of the collection tommorow.

Well, how cheap is "dirt cheap"? A quick search turned up nothing on Gamestop's site, and this is still a blind buy, and my track record on highly recommended blind buys has been a little spotty, to say the least.

Truth be told, I don't even know what kind of games these are. Up until a few months ago, I had figured (judging by the commercials and the few snippets of cutscenes I had seen) that the games were sort of like a military-themed DMC, but someone corrected me and told me that they were "stealth action", whatever that means.

If nothing else, I'm more curious about it now just to get all the various references in SSBB and hopefully explain some of the weirder things about the character and setting.

One question, though... how bad are the cutscenes, anyway? I'm not a huge fan of long-winded cutscenes. I wouldn't mind them if they were good quality, but when I'm just sitting there waiting for the characters to get to the damn point (recent offenders are FFX and R.A.D.) instead of actually playing the game I tend to get a little annoyed.

Still, the series does seem to get praised from pretty much everybody, so I might take the plunge and see how it goes.

ok cool thanks guys!:D

oh for those interested Wal-Mart has Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection in stock again on its website http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8832736 their one-day shipping is $12.97 :O

Did any Europeans order this? Amazon won't export to Yurop and videogameplus.ca charges $30 for S&H. If I can find an online retailer with a reasonable shipment price, it's cheaper to get this version than the MGS2:Substance standalone.

I wonder how viable it would've been for Konami to put the original MGS unchanged onto a PS2 DVD. I know it's not a huge deal, but they've got to know that most people don't have PS1 memory cards anymore. Unless their intent was for people to play this on the PS3.

Was Konami being lazy, or did they just figure people wouldn't mind?

Bought this today with the new Hot Shots Golf.

Am a Metal Gear beginner, so some help?

1) I assume I'm meant to play this from 1-3, in that order, right?

2) How long is each game?

3) Any general tips or things I should be aware of?

or just play it on PS3.

This is what i'm still confused about... On EB's site it says you can save MGS1 on "ANY" ps3. I'm assuming that it still won't work on my 40gig that isn't BC will it?

Ok, I've NEVER touched a MGS game before...

So am I supposed to start with MGS3? I'd really rather start with the PS1 game though because it'll probably feel realllllly aged if I play 3 first.
