Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

Yeah this thread made me replay MGS2 again and holy cow it hasn't aged a day. Graphics are still top notch, gameplay's great and the story's still confusing. I just beat MGS1 and MGS3 too so the next MGS will the fourth installment. Man, I'm pumped.

I actually think some parts of MGS2 aged pretty bad. The camera is terrible and the pressure aiming (which I think is cool) is really not practical at all. A lot of the controls just seem unnessicary after seeing how streamlined they are making the controls in MGS4. Also, I just realized for the first time while playing VR missions that in the past dozens or so times ive played MGS2 in the past and again just recently that L1 is the lock on button. I never knew that before.

Also replaying this game made me realize that with the exception of L3/R3 and Start/Select on the DS2/3 every button is pressure sensetive. I never realized the D-Pad was pressure sensetive nor did I realize the shoulder buttons were. It is really crazy how the DS2/3 had all these awesome features yet few games really take advantage of them.

Well, I just finished MGS2 for the first time. The visuals, for such an early PS2 title, hold up extremely well. Still looks good, and controls fine too.

Some notes:

What the fuck just happened. Playing this game through the night with a lack of sleep did not help my comprehension abilities. Many replays are in order to figure this out

I don't understand the Raiden hate. Maybe I had to be caught up in the hype at the time to get pissed off about it. I enjoyed the parallels to the first game. Rose hate, however, is potentially understandable.

I must sleep now, and dream of plot twists that turn into more plot twists, with topping of plot twist, followed up by a dessert of plot twists. sleeeeeeeeeeeeptwist

Everyone wanted Snake to be the hero. I guess what was the biggest reason some years ago. Later everyone started to hate him because of this female look and behaviour. You know, he was just not the typical hero.

and yeah, the graphics are still nice. I just replayed the game some weeks ago and it looks gorgeous.

didnt' submit to Ocelot's torture in MGS 1......I could never do it when I was younger and I finally did it. I was so proud.
Is that scene significantly easier in TTS? I had no trouble at all getting by it (have only played TTS).

Many, many times easier, there is no comparison at ALL. It's another reason how Twin Snakes fails, it doesn't make you earn the real ending.

Ok, so I was able to grab this yesterday from Gamestop....

In the past, I've only beaten MGS. I played 2 a little bit, but I think I quit when I was sneaking through a room with like 100 soldiers? Anyway...I bought a playersguide from the used game shop for $5 for mgs3 snake eater. I didn't realize thats not the same game that comes with essentials. Is this guide completely worthless? Just what ARE the differences?

Thanks GAF

Nah, the guide will get you through with no problems. I wouldn't use it, though.

So I beat MGS1 in one sitting last night. I had played roughly 50% of the game a month or two ago so by skipping all the cinemas that I had watched then, I ended up beating it in about four hours. One thing that stood out to me was that the voice-overs for 1 sound a lot better than 3's. It may just be me, either way, wow, this game is still batshit amazing. I'd like to point out that by far my favorite thing about MGS1 is the credits.

I don't understand it either! I guess most MGS fans (specially men) are HUGE Snake fanboys so they really hated the fact that
they couldn't play as their man-crush and took it out on Raiden.
Also I don't think Raiden is *that* feminine compared to your typical Anime (Rurouni Kenshin - SamuraiX) or RPG (Final Fantasy) characters.. And these guys are quite popular despite of their "effeminate" appearances.

I do agree about Rose though, she just doesn't know when to shut up.
Raiden is in the middle of a dangerous mission and could die any moment. And here she is talking about personal crap! The *oh I'm soo lonely* Codec call was so fucking annoying, I wanted to throw things at my TV screen! I just hated it when Raiden went back to her.

I tagged
Raiden
bits because I don't want to get yelled at again!!

MGS1 and MGS2 completed, MGS3 remains.

After finishing MGS2 for the first time in years...well, it makes the wait for MGS4 a lot harder than it was after MGS3. So many things I want to know about whats going on, I cant wait for MGS4 to answer these questions ive had for years now

Also,
Raiden hate isnt deserved. The only reason to hate Raiden is because of Rose and her nonstop talking.

Bingo. So far that's my only reason. Other than that,
Raiden is nearly identical to Snake, errr, Peter

This seems like a good place to ask. Recently I've been going through my Gamecube collection and this afternoon I was bored and decided to watch Twin Snakes cinematics in the theatre mode.

Is there something I'm missing but unlike MGS 2 you can't go to a specific scene? You have to watch the whole thing from start to end (Including all the main codec's it seems). Please tell me I'm doing it wrong...

What theatre mode?

I can't confirm this, but I believe the original Sons of Liberty (that's available for like... $3 now at any game store) has a theater mode to view all of the cutscenes, but I'm not really certain as to whether or not this is true, since I only own Substance, which has no theater mode outside of the casting theater.

Both Twin Snakes and the original MGS1 skip numerous key codec calls (i.e. the first codec call from Master, so you end up being introduced to this guy half-way through the theater with no background info). It also skips one of the cutscenes where Snake gets attacked by several soldiers as he goes down the elevator platform.

I thought neither was the real ending since
both end up surviving
? I prefer Meryl's ending btw it just feels right! Does MGS2 have another ending? I only played it once so far so ? Same for MGS3 except I haven't played it at all yet.

The theater mode is in Subsistence.

In Meryl's ending, both Otacon and Meryl live, so that is the real ending. In Otacon's ending Meryl dies so that isnt the real ending. The ending that I like much more than the other is the Otacon ending for various reasons.

I just checked my copy of TTS. There's no Theatre mode a la Substance/Subsistance where you can watch individual cut scenes a your leisure (because everyone wants to watch the Ninja scenes). Demo Theatre makes you watch ALL SCENES including codec calls (blargh).

True but still.
Why didn't MGS2 had two endings like MGS1? 1) Accepting Rose 2) Solidus killing her! But I don't believe Rose is in love with Raiden, I think she's still working for the Patriot

yes, I know, but that's seriously arguing semantics. Theater mode, demo theater, big difference, both let you watch cutscenes, and that's what I was talking about in general.

no theater mode in Sons of Liberty or Snake Eater*. only in substance and subsistence

edit: the euro version of snake eater had the theatre mode as well

there's also the secret theatre, in the 2nd disc of subsistence (missing from the essential collection), which is just machinima, funny outtakes and trailers, but not the real in-game cutscenes/story

Well, I know about Snake Eater, but I was wondering if there was one in Sons of Liberty. I know everything else you said.

This may seem like the ultimate noob question for MGS3...but how do you heal yourself? im not talking about taking out bullets and all, just simple things like Rations to heal your life bar in previous games. I played MGS3 a few times years ago when it came out, but after playing MGS1 and MGS2 before this, my head is all screwed up when it comes to MGS3.

Life Medicine. There's one in the very first area of the game, go to the right and up the slope, it's hidden in the tall grass

Can't decide wether to play these now or wait until it's a little closer to june. Played MGS1 back when it came out, but forgot most of it. I think i got halfway through MGS2 before I stopped. Never played a MGS title after that. Got the trilogy though, so i'll go through each before MGS4

Personally I think it is better to play them now. At least for me where im about 4 hours into MGS3 right now, I am starting to get a tad fatigued of the same basic gameplay and controls for this long. I am glad im playing these now so when I eventually do play MGS4 it is totally fresh and I dont have the MGS1/2/3 controls and gameplay stuck in my brain.

Gah, Rose is driving me nuts.

"Do you remember what day is tomorrow?"

....

"Have you remembered yet?"

"Am I more than just a trophy girlfriend to you?"

I'm on a freaking mission to save the fucking world, and I'm dealing with personal crap. Ugh.

Other than that though, thank god for first person aiming.

i just bought twin snakes and the collection today. didnt know you needed to have a gc mem card to save games on the wii :(

so far it seems like mgs with updated graphics, but the controller i bought sucks ass. cant wait for mgs 4!

What semantics? Whose arguing? I'm just annoyed that I can't watch the Ninja whenever I feel like it! (Unlike in the PS2 versions where you can pick and choose.)

Quick question:

After destroying the
Harrier
and crossing over to the second strut, how do you cross to the center building of shell 2 with the one area with the hole in it?

I can't seem to climb down the side, and dropping off doesn't seem let me go anywhere either, unless I'm doing something wrong....

put your back against the rail and slide over

Playing MGS1 for the first time since 2002, still great. I'm at the lab where you first meet Hal. "This is just like out of one of my Japense animes".
The fight between Snake and Gray Fox is disturbing now, Fox is all "Yes, that's it........Make me feel good" eveytime I hit him.

Ha, I implied the wrong part. I tried flipping before, but must not have timed it right, I guess that's what I'm supposed to do.

You can cartwheel over, its the only way to get the
AK74u suppressor.

Yes if you go to the main menu and go into extras there is a bunch of features one of which is theatre mode.

The only thing really bothering me like I said is you can't watch a specific scene you have to watch the cut-scenes from beggining to end (Although you can skip them).

Which totally sucks and completely backwards (Much like the game sadly). I just want to see
Ninja versus Rex

BigBoss said:

What?

Damn, missed that then.

I was talking about getting to the shell 2 core. Couldn't seem to get the timing for the flip right. And on top of that, I'm pretty sure I missed the
PSG1-T somewhere....

Yeah you missed it, strut F.

Wikipedia says that all the MGS games should be played in this exact order:

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)
Metal Gear (NES)
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2)
Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

Heh sounds about right. The added MGS2 gameplay makes TTS way too easy. I still played and loved it though because of the dogtags and the updated graphics.
