tell me i don't need a PSX memory card to save my Metal Gear Solid game. FUKCFUKCFUCKFUCKFUCKFU

If you have a PS3, than you don't need one, but if you're playing the game on a PS2, than your SOL.

Yea but not everyone has a ps3 that is backwards compatible. Unless ps1 games work fine on all ps3s? If so i had no idea.

They do. Only the PS2 BC was removed in the 40GB SKU.

kickass!! this was the only thing I was worried about because finding a ps1 memory card these days is probably impossible.

They're quite easy to find online. I was thinking about ordering a new one last week, but instead I moved all my old save files to my PS3 with the PSX/PS2 memory card adaptor thingy.

I was playing Suikoden II for the first time, and the stupid game allowed me to start a new game without checking if it had any available space left on the mem card. If I didn't have other Playstations I would have been seriously pissed off.

The thing is I use a normal tube TV for my PS2 and my LCD TV (16:9) for my PS3. So is MGS1 going to look like complete ass on my TV? I know when i plugged my ps2 into my new tv it looked terrible.

Might have to look for a Ps1 memory card if it does.

Curious question here! Can you create virtual PS2 memory cards on 40gb systems? Even without PS2 playback it would still be a nice feature to keep around to backup your PS2 saves and stuff.

Yes. There was a topic created by some 40GB owner a while ago, who thought it was a sign that BC would be added later with a firmware update.

Use the PS3's upscaling feature and turn on smoothing. It should look okay (but remember it's still a PS1 game and will look like one!)

I know, I know a lot of you guys feel that you should experience the first game, but honestly the graphics are so off-putting that I can't get into it. I never thought of myself as a graphics-whore, but this game is just fugly. I know that is how graphics were on the PSone, but that was before my time. I was six years old when MGS1 released. So here's the deal, I heard about Twin Snakes but I can't find a copy anywhere. Not even used. So I am either going to have to force myself through MGS1(unlikely) or skip it all together. Will I have no way of understanding what happens in 2, 3, and eventually 4 if I never play MGS1? Would I be able to pick up on what happened through the events of the other games? If not, is their anywhere out their that I can watch/read the cutscenes or story synopsis?

The PS1 era graphics are just too damn fugly for my spoiled eyes.

EDIT: This is not a troll. I really want to get up to speed on the Metal Gear Solid games, and usually graphics are not an issue for me, but after playing the first level off MGS1, I never want to play a game with graphics that bad.

I commend all of you whom survived through the PS1/N64 graphical era.

God bless.

You need to play 1. I just played it and thought it aged pretty well, even though 2 and 3 completely blow it out of the water.

snack: Play MGS1. After the first hour or so you won't even notice the graphics anymore. There is a lot of important plot in the first game, and while you could read a summary, it's certainly better to actually play through it. Furthermore, MGS1 is a very good introduction to the series, in terms of coming to grips with how the gameplay works. MGS2 introduces a lot more gameplay elements, and would probably be pretty overwhelming if it's the first one you play.

I played COD4 -> Condemned -> MGS1, it didn't bother me (I have an HD CRT though, so it probably helps). Maybe it's nostalgia speaking though. Seriously MGS1 is amazing, I just wish there was some analog control.

You can't even find Twin Snakes at a local gamestop? Snack try looking in a local flea market or thrift store if you got the time. I'm surprised many are saying MGS1 graphics are crappy. Personally I think it aged pretty damn good, never been much of a graphic whore though.

The biggest reason MGS1 still holds up is because the music is so fucking phenomenal. The visuals are quite nice, but the cinematic presentation and score is too engaging to dismiss when holding the controller and sneaking about.

I discovered why it looked incredibly bad. My PS3 had it rendering widescreen with smoothing on. After turning off that shit, the game looks OK, and I was able to make some progress. I finally hit some of the story elements of the game, and I am hooked.

I am so glad I fixed the problem, because the first bit of the game is pretty fucking awesome.

Alright guys... its time for me to experience the MGS series for the first time... I just put MGS into my PS3.

I'm reading through the back story now... :D

I plan to pick this up after GTA4. Will I be able to beat all three in May in time for MGS4?

I know MGS1 is short, but how long are 2 and 3?

assuming you play on Normal, unlike some other people

MGS1 = 8-10 hours
MGS2 = 10-12 hours
MGS3 = 12-15 hours [I've seen some as high as 20 hours on first play-through]

I have never played any of the MGS so I ordered this essential collection from Amazon. Anyone else order from amazon get it yet? Mine has yet to come :(. I know they had a delay or something but I had amazon gift money to blow.

Definitely man. I managed to get to the final stretch of MGS3 in a week and two days with some dedicated game time.

Me either, is this not in Canada yet?

Just finished Metal Gear Solid 2 and I loved it. Metal Gear Solid has just made its way to the top of my favorite gaming franchises.

I do have some story questions though.

Who exactly are the Patriots? If they died 100 years ago, through what means are they giving orders? I remember Colonel mentioning that they were able to digitize humans, so I am wondering if they took the genetic code for all twelve of them and digitized the, allowing them to live on?

Also, none of the game was a VR simulation, right? I know it was simulated by the Patriots to test the S3 system, to see if they can shape the outcome of human behavior through manipulation of certain variables, but the part when Raiden enters the Arsenal Gear and the area around his feet do this little light-pattern thing and Ocelot mentioning that they were in the "memory" of Shadow Moses. I didn't know if the following sequence(Metal Gear RAY fight) was inside a VR simulation. If it wasn't, wear exactly were they during that battle. Were they on top of Arsenal Gear while it was in the middle of the Hudson, or were they inside some strange chamber within Arsenal?

I also just started MGS3. It is starting a little too slow for my liking. Hopefully it picks up, because I loved the other two games.

Oh don't worry it will. I prefer MGS3s story over MGS2 myself, just give it some time I'm sure you'll have a different opinion later on snack.

Play Metal Gear Solid 3 for more information about the patriots! You'll get a lot of background knowledge in this game.

I guess there were on top of Arsenal

I pulled my original psx from storage and started playing through MGS1 last night again. I'm surprised the damn thing still works, I bought it pretty close to launch too. It has some weird disc loading issues and long load times but it's still quite playable. :lol

Just bought the collection 5 minutes ago. I was still undecided about getting it, since i still have those games in their original form, even though the collection brings the Substance and subsitence edition of them. The only thing i still wish was included were the original msx games. I really think that they are small enough to have been put together with either mg game included in the collection.

Yeah. My old PS1 is a bit fidgety, it's the original launch ones, an SCPH-1001. But it still works on most things.

MGS3 has a story?

Yeah I loved the story
between EVA, Snake(Big Boss), Ocelot and The Boss. It beat all that crazy out there stuff in MGS2 by far to me. The story was especially good with the game taking place at the height of the Cold War,
it almost beats the original story imo.

So I decided to play MGS2 first because Its the only one of the three I have played before, and man I forgot how hard these games are :lol

I finally got through mgs 1 last night. I was a late to the game with metal gear solid. I remember always wanting to pick it up at the store, but for whatever the reason I never got a chance.

Mgs 1 held up very well for me. I was impressed by how cinematic the game was and some of the gameplay elements was as usual kojima not your typical game. I know the cinematic stuff annoys some people, but the core gameplay of mgs often seems to get overlooked because of it.

I played mgs 2, mgs3 and now mgs1 in that order. I began playing mgs 2 just because at the time I thought mgs3 was the sequel to mgs2. To me mgs 2 is my favorite, maybe it has something to do with the fact that it was the first one i played, but i love how different it is.

I can't wait for mgs4, but I'm just scared of reading or watching any previews. I'm officially going on a MGS4 blackout. I know that I'll probably run into some spoilers online. I'll see you guys after I beat mgs4
