Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

So I know, holy thread necro, but I finally just beat MGS. Should I play MGS3 next, then follow it up with 2, and then buy 4? Or play 2 then 3 then 4?

play them in order, after you play 3/subsistence you won't be able to go back to 2.

I am having a ridiculously tough time finding this collection. I want it merely for my ever-growing MGS collection, but the fact that it's nowhere to be found now is fucking bananas.

Try best buy in store? They had 3 copies last time I checked.

Amazon has it in stock. I got my copy today in the mail from them.

MGS2 down, under 9 hours total (but that includes the time spent watching the cutscenes), didn't get detected or kill a single thing until I was inside
Aresnal

Extremely sad that
EE and Olga died
and the ending kinda didn't really make that much sense, but I guess some of the stranger points get tied up with MGS4/the database?

Starting MGS3 tonight :D

Something you want to know before you enter MGS4: There was a gender translation error when referring to two different people in third person in both MGS 1 and 2, according to how 4 goes down.

One of them you already should know if you've been following MGS4, which is that Olga's child isn't a boy, but a girl.

The other one was revealed recently in the Metal Gear Solid novel, and was revealed, which is that Dr. Clark is actually a woman. The book in question came out a week or so before MGS4's release.

Can we pretend there wasn't an MGS2 ?
Or should we just disconnect the center channel speaker for the Big Shell?

I can not express how much joy and fun the Marine Tanker and rain were.
It's so ironic that the melodrama and feebleness of Big Shell was the real rain on the parade.
Fun to explore, challenging location, great detail, Easter eggs, and cinematics, but pitiful Raiden and train wreck story.
What kind of soldier could possibly be as pitiful as Raiden and not get killed or freeze up at a critical point?
The Fat guy on roller blades? For real? Serious?
I would have feared him more in a rainbow wig and red nose, then at least it would have seemed intentionally ridiculous and less lame.

The Rain on the Tanker was the most advances water effects I had ever seen. (And may still be?)
Never before on PC, Xbox, or anywhere else had rain seemed so real and natural. (Err except for nature :P)
Even the port of MGS2 to Xbox and PC seemed to not have as much rain effects.
That was the pinnacle of what the Graphics Synthesizer and 4MB eDRAM bandwidth could do.
The GS's textureless shading ability was very impressive, even though otherwise limited.

I've seen two of these sitting in a case at a store. Does anyone feel like they're going to be a real collector's item?

I still see these in stores here.... don't get all excited about rarity.

Recently my friend who owns a PS3 wanted to borrow my copy of MGS4. Unfortunately he never played any of the previous games, so I begged and pleaded with him that he should play through the first 3.

Over the weekend when I went over his house I brought the essentials pack, and I watched him play through 1, and halfway through 2. He's now about 1/4th the way through 3. Very surprised he's going through them, and so fast since he's not a huge console gamer.

It was neat watching someone play through the games for the first time, also jogged my memory about 1+2 which I hadn't seen in awhile.

Which part confused you?

how did mehling spot that snow machine via satellite that was in a freakin' cave?

So I beat the first game on easy(lolz), can I start a new game on hard and overwrite my first play through? The game just starts over and I think it is still on easy.

ya lol i laughed at that when i played through it for the first time a month or two ago.

Sorry to bump this super old thread, but I've recently bought

Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection
Metal Gear Solid 4
God of War Collection
Demon's Souls

even though I dont have a ps3 yet.

I've only had a 360 and haven't been following ps3 AT ALL. What I was wondering is, which PS3 would I have to get in order to play the metal gear solid collection (backwards compatible with ps1/ps2)?

I'de like a slim but I don't think it has backwards compatibility with ps2 right?

So whats the biggest and newest PS3 that can play old PS1/ps2 games?

no ps3 is backwards compatible now. the best ps3 is the 60 gig launch ps3. good luck.

None. You need 60GB/20GB Launch PS3s to play it, or 80GB MGS Edition PS3 (or 80GB regular but they are, if im correct, mixed up with the ones that are not backward compatible).

Ebay is your only hope... how much are you willing to pay?

At this point I honestly think you're better off getting a new PS3 slim and a slim PS2. The PS2 has an amazing library of games and if you've never owned one before then there are a lot of gems to discover. Picking up a new PS3 and used PS2 is most likely cheaper than getting a backwards compatible PS3 from eBay anyway (plus you'll get a warranty from the store).

Oh sorry, I meant to say I know the new ones aren't backwards compatable. I'm looking to buy a used one that CAN play ps2/ps1 games though.

I'm just not familiar with which models can play them and which is the newest SKU's that still had backwards compatibility.

So which was the last SKU to have it?

And to the poster above, i dont know prices yet so let me know what your selling and I might bite.

MGS4 Bundle (80GB)

thank you.

1 last question.

Does hard drive size even matter? Can't you just hook up any HDD's you want to ps3? Like a hack or something. I thought I remember reading about that. Or are their hard drives like MS Xbox ones, proprietary and have to use theirs.

There's a used BC PS3 for $350 on eBay. Keep in mind that if the Blu-ray drive fails, you have to pay $150 for a repair. On the other hand you can get a new slim PS3 for $299 and a refurbished PS2 from Gamespot for $49.99.

You can replace the HDD with a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM HDD of any size. Here's a replacement guide.

You mean Gamestop! :P

Oh and yes, this is the only way to go if you're a purist. That said, eBay is your only option right now.

Funny you should ask, I've actually played the MGS collection on my:

they all look and run smoothly.

Well it took me two years but I just finished mgs3 :lol Didn't literally take that long, more like 7 hours but the game was a blast for the most part. The collection was an excellent purchase even if it took me forever to beat all games. Onward to mgs4.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I'm playing MGS 1 for the first time in 10 years or so, and I have a question. I'm playing right after you get off the elevator (beginning of the game), and I acquired the SOCOM and saved the game. Whenever I die and load the save game, I don't have the SOCOM anymore, and I start off near the elevator. Is this supposed to be happening?

It saves your inventory from the last loading screen. You cant save your socom until after you exit the airfield with it. Also, you don't really need the gun until you meet Meryl.

You'll need to get the gun and then go into the building to load up another area. Then you can save and keep your stuff. If you save your game, it will automatically load at the beginning of the are you saved at when you come back.
