Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

From the press release Konami sent out 2 weeks ago:

Metal Gear Solid: the Essential Collection includes the original Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation game console, the director's cut of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in a commemorative package with artwork by renowned Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Shinkawa.

says PlayStation. ?

I feel ridiculous for saying this, but the box art alone makes justifies this purchase for me. I think I'm going to turn the art for MGS3 into a poster.

Yeah but it's in a DVD type box since MGS wasn't released early enough to be in those old big PSone cases. :P

No it wasn't released in the big PSone cases. It came in a typical 2 Disc CD case. Ya know the shitty ones the shatter if you look at it funny.

You're far from alone. Nearly every person in this thread that wants it, owns these games already.

Probably been answered already, but here it goes. Is this available Play-Asia only right now or can we expect this in game stores the begining of March?

QFT I have MGS, MGS2, MGS3, + SE MGS2&3.

BTW these three-game box sets they do for the PS2 are awesome.

The DMC one, which is hard to find now, has DMC3 SE in NON-GREATEST HITS packaging.

haha, I wonder how many people remember that.

They gave up on those big cases pretty early on. They must have switched to cd-sized jewel cases part way through 1996, as RE1 (March 1996) was in the old style case but Tomb Raider (November 1996) was in a regular cd case.

I don't think I ever owned a game in the original PS1 cases, despite buying the system within a year of the North American launch.

At least they were easy to replace if you busted them. I accidently broke my Panzer Dragoon 2 and Dragon Force cases while moving and now have no way of replacing them short of buying crappy Saturn games on Ebay, and switching the casings. I was definitely glad when everyone switched to DVD casings. Same goes for Nintendo FINALLY ditching the cardboard boxes for their portable games.

They switched to CD cases at E3 1996 in May. Worms was one of the first released in a regular CD case.

I still have a bunch of games in the old case. Return Fire, Philosoma, Raiden Project, Darkstalkers, Toshinden (yea...), a couple others.

Any chance that the MGS manual is redone to compensate for the DVD case?

BTW, you can preorder this already, I already did a few weeks ago at Gamestop

Do you not read the posts above yours?
There's only the first disc of MGS3:S included.

I bought the special edition of Subsistence when it came out. The only things I don't have right now is Ghost Babel, Substance, and VR Missions.

actually, I've seen at least 1 copy in every GS I've visited. The store I tempt'd at had like 5. But yeah, non-red logo ftw, though the product serial on the side of the box makes it clear that it's a special print, and not unique.

Actually, Ryan said they are really concentrating on the box art and packaging to justifiy a purchase for those who have these already. This leads me to believe that this isn't the real box art as of yet.

Konami PR finally got back to me and now he's saying that he's not sure how many discs MGS is, but it is on PS2 discs. He's calling to find out now. Sorry for the confusion guys. I'll post here as soon as I know. Even if it's on two PS2 CDs, I'm cool with that as the big issue for me was digging out my PS1 memory card.

Really? I had thought the art in that image was new. I've never seen that art for MGS or MGS3 before.

Does anyone have better quality images of that cover artwork?

That doesn't make sense. At all.

Since someone suggested this thread would be more appropriate, does anyone know if MGS3:S runs in 480p widescreen mode on the PS3?

widescreen, no. but the PS3 upscales it to whatever.

So excited. Even though I have the originals I'm in for 2... and I'll be replaying each game again just in time for MGS4!!!

Doesn't the PS3 allow this for all PS2 titles (stretching the image to quasi-widescreen), assuming you have a model that supports BC?

well again the PS3 can upscale it, which is better than nothing.

it does suck that the MGS games are really cinematic but Hideo didn't put in a 16:9 option. watching the cinemas in a 4:3 letterbox sucks on a widescreen TV. so much wasted space...

That's why I'm looking forward to MGS4 so much. :D

Kojima better be going all out on the series finale.

Will all of these work an an NTSC 80gb PS3? I haven't played MGS in a LONG time and would like to play them all through again before MGS4 (plus I sold my PS1, PS2, and all the games for both......)

Yes. MGS3 has slight slowdowns at certain points but it will definitely be fixed for this particular version

MSX 2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

It's news to me if it's true. Subsistence came on 2 discs and the 2nd disc was the one that featured MGO as well as MG and MG2. That 2nd disc isn't suppose to be in this package.

True. But the description doesn't talk about MGO. MG and MG2 aren't that big on filesize either so they can be easily added.

That's definitely true. It'd make the package that much better if they do include them.

Has anyone heard about anything for a European release date? specifically the UK? Imported PS2 games don't work as well as imported PS3 games on a PAL PS3 - like not at all.

P.S. That June 12th thing release for MGS4 is US specific right - or are they doing a simultaneous worldwide launch?

Ryan has said that simultaneous means within a few weeks of eachother.

so will I need a PS1 memory card to save games for MGS1 on PS2?
Unless you got a PS3 like me :D

Slayer-33 said:

If this has MG and MG2 I'm going to buy this 100%. I've always bought MGS at launch and for MGS 2 and 3 I've missed the substance and subsistance versions. It would be awesome if this had it all!

Shagg where did you get the understanding that the MGS3 was only disc 1? Just wanna see (HOPE) that this gamestop ad is correct.

How do you put your Sixaxis into 2nd controller slot mode? I don't want to have to buy a $50 controller to
beat a boss
.

Whoops didn't even notice that option. Thanks! :D

So according to Gamestop's description, the extra MGS3 disc with the demo theater, etc. will be included. Is their info to be trusted?

Sorry for not reading the entire thread, but has it been confirmed that those boxarts are the official boxarts of this collection or are they just fan mockups?

If Konami doesn't package this with a PS1 memory card or allow MGS1 to save onto a PS2 memory card, consider it the dumbest fucking move ever.
