I was just playing Ground Zeroes and I was in a tower. I had the guard over my shoulder, and stood up. Another guard spotted me, so reflex mode activated. I threw the guard out of the tower, and hit the one on the ground, knocking him out.

I also have MGS4 because I got it day one and I never played it either, no idea why.

Would you suggest I jump straight to GZ? Play through IV first? Buy PSX classics? I've heard the story is crazy complicated and I wanna jump in to this franchise and enjoy it.

The only ones you absolutely need to play in order to better understand Ground Zeroes would be Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Those are the games that precede it, chronologically.

[Chronological order] Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 4

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, which falls between Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, is considered partially canon, but I would recommend watching that on YouTube. Many would agree that it is very hard to play.

If possible, I recommend playing them in order of release, skipping Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and starting with Metal Gear Solid (followed then by Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes).

You've never played an MGS before? Play Ground Zeroes if you want to since it's a shiny new game and you probably want to play it. Don't worry about the story too much. When you're ready to start going into the series properly, though, play the games in release order.

If you want to be super hardcore about it, go:

- Metal Gear (1987)
- Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990)
- Metal Gear Solid (1998)
- Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (expansion pack)
- Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (spinoff)
- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
- The extra missions in Metal Gear Solid 2 (extra)
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
- Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
- Metal Gear Ac!d 2 (spinoff, make sure it's number 2)
