Metal slug 7 (DS) trailer

What does that have to do with Japanophilia?

It sounds better than "SNKophile"?

Maybe I should've just said "purists"...

Either way, I'm not saying they should make it the default scheme but I think it might actually work. And, for the record, I'm not usually a fan of unconventional controls. I just think that in this circumstance, it might actually feel more intuitive.

Is this an original game developed for the DS? The arcade releases ended at number six, correct?

My brother, a Metal Slug fan, always complains about the lack of co-op modes in DS games and will be seriously pissed about this. I'm also annoyed.. Was there any mention of the reason in NP?

No reason at all. SNK/Playmore always made some weird decision, so it's not as if I was totally shocked to learn that news. Maybe they decided to keep it one player so they could pull the most out of the DS hardware without too much slowdown, maybe it's the resolution, who knows.

Day 1, and since it's already confirmed for a stateside release hopefully it makes it in 08.

Looks sweet to me, even the logo is awesome. and I don't see any slowdown or sprite problems, seems some are blaming the DS for Youtube's crap quality.

It's like, I love playing old games on handhelds, but playing NEW 'old' games is the freaking beez neez. Contra 4 was glorious.

It's pretty good even though the levels are short (about 7*5 min). I love the coming back of the war school too, makes me lol so hard at the conversations with the cute instructor :D

Oh and for fans : it's got some difficulty too, even the easiest setting mode isn't so easy. You'll still have unlimited machinegun on easy, so go for medium if you are an old-timer of the series.

Looks like Metal Slug alright. Not to nitpick, but the backgrounds look pretty weak. Some of the giant sprites look awesome though..

Yeah the backgrounds are pretty weak in comparison of the other games. But it looks better in motion since a lot of stuff is happening most of the time.
Also I should mention that there is some slowdown when there's too much enemies at the screen (mainly level 6/7). There are new vehicules as well, even with a boss only fightable while in some sort of russian-fashioned robot against our old friend, Allen O'Neil !

EDIT : whoops, sorry for dp

7 levels at around 5 minutes a piece? yikes

Well considering you can finish Metal Slug 1, 2 & X each in about 1/2 an hour, it doesn't seem so bad, especially with the school war next to it, which offers challenge: finish a level without dying, rescue as much prisoner as possible, and some context-specific games (survive waves of enemies, time trial, etc)

Yeah I guess some of the others really were that short. Thanks for your impressions. This game sounds worth picking up.

Brand new MS for DS? Wow, nice! Does it use the touchscreen or is it old school gameplay?

The performance kind of sucks. I am used to have smooth framerates in my Metal Slug games, but the framerate on this one is pretty bad. I only played it on a friend's DS, but I was kind of disappointed.

Old school, the controls are fully remapable too. But default is pretty good, even if I don't use close-combat moves. Also if you played 6th on Anthology the gameplay is about the same : store two weapons and change with R, possibility to do special attacks (useful with the kof guys), infinite machinegun on easy (but you can play the whole game this time though).

Yes. I'm curious as why you wouldn't, though.

EDIT : you can't with the handgun, same as always, but you can do a simili-machinegun diagonal with some weapons (laser), but the diagonal will just appear for a second, you still can't wash the screen like you could with the zombie grenade from MS3.

Well I only have played a bit of MS before but I remember not being possible to shoot diagonally, and that bothered me. Maybe I'm recalling wrong though.

Did the GBA or NGP Metal Slugs have multiplayer? I can understand wanting it (even if it is multicard only like Contra 4) but if none of the other portable versions had it we can't be too surprised.

You're used to having smooth framerates in Metal Slug? Which system have you been playing them on?

Yeah got it imported. Framerate is quite ... well its not bad all the time, but it can definitely reach a slow crawl. Maybe I am just noticing it a lot more because I've played Metal Slug far to much on the Xbox, which doesn't skip a beat. It can be frustrating to dodge fire when you're moving half the speed.

Also the difficult seems rather easy compared to say Slug 3. The boss fights are cool and the new weapons and slugs are interesting, but you start with 4 or 5 credits during the arcade, and can start any from any mission you have completed making the main mode fairly easy to get through. Whether this will change on local release I have no idea.

Well, Metal Slug X removed the slowdown from Metal Slug 2.

MSAnthology is a good buy for a guy stuck in a slow desk job - aside from crippling load times. Eesh.

Ive played, and finish in easy, the game in a friends house, and having played and finish all metal slugs I can say I really like this one. I think the music is one of the best of all the saga.
Havent experienced too much lag either.

The Japanese game even comes with Spanish as select language! :D

I thought combat school was awesome, you van replay with various objectives the missions you have played in the main mode, with different objectives (kill all the enemies, perfect finish, get all the objects, minigames...) and like this you can practice for doing the main mode in perfect. Also when you finish a combat school mission, theres an option ta talk with the teacher, and the dialogs are really humorous, even playing with the thing that she is a typical anime girl, great sex jokes also:lol

The bad thing, and the only bad thing I can see is hat it doesnt have coop, and that for me in metal slugs is a must. Really sorry for that.

i've played all the metal slugs except for 6.... this one is one of the crappier ones imo.

I've played all but the GBA/NGP ones.
It's easily better than 4/5/6 which were crap. (okay 6 wasn't so bad)

ED : Lack of coop is disappointing though, especially after Contra 4. Oh well.
People will surely disagree but I also appreciate how you can play anything you've already unlocked, making it perfect for a small run while riding the bus or whatever.
And Combat School when you're at home. ^_^

Not really impressed with this one. Metal Slug 6 seemed to be a bit of turning point for the series - not as good as X or 3, but better than 4 and 5, mostly because of the new additions. There's none of that in 7 - it carries forward all the stuff from 6 but doesn't add anything really new or interesting. It's vaguely impressive for a DS screen, other than the squashed sprites and a bit more slowdown, it runs and plays surprisingly well, but it's not enough to excuse another uninspired romp.

Even on a crappy youtube video, you can still tell that all of the new artwork looks bad. it's like they just can get the perspective or angles of the depth right on mechanized enemies, or that intricate visual detail that the series was known for. The coherence of visuals that was there in MS1-3 is just not there anymore, and probably never will be. I really wonder where have original Nazca artists landed.

Any idea on the US release? It's coming out in August in Europe.

Not any confirmation of any kind but gamestop has a placeholder date of 11/18/08. It that ends up being true will be bummed but still kinda sad that there's no co op at all :(

The bosses still look pretty cool, actually. The duel with Allen is definitely the best looking part of the game, it uses multi segmented sprites and rotation effects for smoother animation, which you didn't see too often on the Neo Geo. But the backgrounds are just as bad or worse than Metal Slug 6.

I have the game as it arrived yesterday. It is nice but shame no co-op! I think maybe they tried but the framerate just wouldnt hold up. sometimes it drops when lots of action on screen so multi-player could be much worse.
