Metallica Through The Never IMAX 3D |OT| ...and then NEVER comes

I listened to them live.. what? 5 years ago? They performed great then.

But I too wish Fade to Black was in there. It's my favorite song.
I saw them in '09... unfreaking real how they either just finished (or maybe still are) touring for Death Magnetic. They were crazy good though live. Metallica taught me that you can abuse liquor and hard drugs for two decades and still have more energy and ass-kickery than most people in their teens.

Fade to Black is probably my favorite Metallica song too. The acoustic part is so hauntingly beautiful.

It always blows my mind when I realized they created Ride the Lightning in their early 20s. Man, what the hell am I doing with my life?

I think the DM touring cycle is done and they're doing a few international shows before going into the studio next year.

I get the same feels, man :(

How was the Stern appearance?

Just got the soundtrack in the mail; the packaging is way more elaborate than I thought it would be. Pretty cool so far -- haven't had a chance to listen yet.

So who is this movie for? If you are a die-hard Metallica fan, I highly recommend this movie. If you've never seen Metallica live, I absolutely recommend this as your first experience. If you are a movie buff, I'd recommend seeing this for aesthetic purposes. If you are somebody who thinks they can just wait for the DVD, I recommend shelling out the cash for the IMAX 3D experience, because it is definitely an experience that cannot be recreated in your home.

But if you are one of those jaded fucks who stopped caring about Metallica during or before the Black Album, this one is skippable for you.

No other metal band could come close to pulling this off and very few other musical acts would even try. The band and the filmmaker clearly put a lot of effort (and money) into the film and it comes across as the best concert film you will ever see, and for that reason alone, it might be worth your time to see it in the theater.

Can you take pics? I probably won't pick it up until the weekend.
Absolutely, here you go!

Cover (kind of a half slipcase).

Said half slipcase. It's perforated so you can remove the front and use it as a stencil.

The actual cover, under the "slipcase."

Under "Never" is "Yield."

Under "Yield" lies "Fear."

Under "Yield?" "Regret" ... and disc 1.

Under "Regret" is "Rest" and the logo.

Disc 2 and the whole thing unfolded. Makes a sort of cross; intentional?

Sorry about the quality, best I could do in a pinch!

Not interested in the movie, will wait till it hits tv but will buy the live soundtrack

Really at this point im only interested in metallica as a live act, studio, nah i'll pass, last thing in the studio i really enjoyed was garage inc.

can't fault them live though, it would be easy as a megadeth fan to bash them for things like St Anger and Lulu, but then i can't defend it when mustaine's gone bannanas and released super colider, still even a risk and super colider is better than lulu and i mean that.

But i like Jasons CD at the moment, Heavy Metal and he means it.

They were on The Colbert Report last night promoting this. Funny interview with Colbert along with a performance of "For Whom The Bell Tolls".

Buddy just got out of a screening. Said it is slick, but of little interest to non-fans. Narrative elements are not as pronounced as trailer suggests.

Yeah, I get the idea that the narrative is just there to break up the monotony of a traditional live concert movie. They also wanted to do something big and outlandish to compliment the big and outlandish stage production of the show and I imagine it succeeds in both points.

Tonight's status: the night.

I'm seeing this in full on IMAX at 10pm. I'll have a review late tonight or tomorrow. It's a 90 min drive to the closest IMAX so maybe tomorrow.

So, is the soundtrack the exact same as what is in the movie? I assumed so, but I noticed them playing Sanitarium in one of the clips, which isn't on the CD.

EDIT: And they mention The Unforgiven being on the setlist also.

So there's still hope for Seek and Destroy after all. I'm going with a friend tomorrow night. The only disappointing thing could be the setlist, but I'll get over some of my favorites not being on there.

I think the soundtrack is it, which is pretty disappointing since that's not that great of a setlist. The runtime of the movie is an hour and a half, which fits with the soundtrack.

Also, noticed this in the OP:

cobbled together from five nights in Vancouver and Edmonton.

So they probably just recorded all five nights of two hours + shows, and picked out an average movie length worth of songs. Oh well, maybe we'll get a better setlist when this comes to blu ray.

Found the full set lists from the five nights this was recorded at. Songs they played that didn't make it into the movie:

  • Sad But True
  • Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
  • Fade to Black
  • Seek & Destroy (with Frayed Ends of Sanity outro jam)

Too bad about Fade to Black and Seek & Destroy, I need that shit in my veins.

Also, odd note, they didn't play Orion, which is in the movie. So, don't know what's up with that. Maybe the original is just played during the credits, and they don't actually play it.

It's an AMC theater....I'm thinking digital since they have RealD3D, but I'm not sure. I don't think I've been to this theater.
You can check here: http://www.lfexaminer.com/theaUSA.htm. You want 15/70 for traditional IMAX. There are very few left, sadly.

Just wait for the special edition bluray!

I picked up tickets for this Friday, at the Lowes Lincoln Center in NYC. It's the only "REAL" IMAX screen around, so I cant wait to see this on a 70ft screen in 3D.

You have done well. That's where I'd be going if I could see the 3D effect and Moviepass allowed me to buy IMAX tickets! Please report back after!

Digital....most of the 1570s left in FL are in museums anyway.
Figured. Oh well, it'll still be awesome!

The narrative hook for this movie is almost offensively stupid. So stupid that I might have to go see it.

Yeah this might be watched like Song Remains the Same where you skip to the mediocre concert parts. I wish it was more like The Wall but Metallica is too self indulgent these days for that.

:'(

And I've heard Orion is from their warmup jam or something like that. So probably credits.

I'm going to be going to Chicago's Navy Pier IMAX most likely tonight. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!

Ah forgot about this! Might have to see if it's playing in Canada as well ( it better since they shot the concert footage here) I was at the show where they filmed some of it, it was amazing.
