Looks awesome as hell.

I gotta say, I was getting my hopes up again before E3, but now all the videos I've seen so far look really bad (I've only been able to watch the youtube stuff though, 1up doesn't work for me). I'm REALLY hoping that this is all just intro stuff, and that the game stops pestering you with constant story updates and dialog for the majority. Prime 3's intro was annoying like that, but it got better as soon as you got away from the NPCs, hopefully this game does too.

:lol I can't wait till we finally get to hear a full version of a classic metroid tune at some point. Stop teasing us!!

Good:
-charge beam
-controls (looks really responsive)
-first person
-graphics
-camera

Bad:
-dialogue (really amateurish, would've worked if the game was cheesy)
-cutscenes during a boss battle
-invisible walls in a wide open room
(known from before:)
-energy/missile recharging

And the usual yadda yadda how much is story gonna take bla bla. I'm willing to skip some cutscenes if the game is really up to Metroid par, which it should be.

Some impressions:

next was metroid and THE LINE WAS ONE HOUR LONG. CHRIST. the headphones sorta glitched out, which made it sound better, because all you could hear was the awesome music and none of the voices. the gameplay itself is all right, but should have been more 2d than it is, since you're moving around 3d space with a d-pad. i imagine that'll be the chief criticism about the game if people are able to get past the voice acting and writing and animeness of it all.

We had a chance to try our hand at Metroid: Other M a few months ago, and for the most part, we liked what we saw. For this year's E3, Nintendo had a little more of the game to show off; while the demo on the show floor was largely comprised of material we'd already played through, the lengthy introduction portion was supplemented by a quick glimpse of a second sequence that takes Samus into a portion of the game's massive starship environment which has been overrun by various plant life.

There wasn't too much to this area of the demo: Just a few rooms, topped off with a dead end door that couldn't be accessed in the current build of the game. The largest room of the game consists of a huge spiraling ramp encircling a massive tree whose roots spill onto the metal pathways. Much more engrossing, however, is the room immediately before that, where Samus is forced to do battle against a pair of chameleon-like monsters capable of completely cloaking themselves.

Once they activate their invisibility, the chameleons can't be seen or harmed with normal gunfire. By switching into first-person mode, however, Samus can lock onto their signatures and hit them with a missile, disrupting their camo. This also has the effect of sending the creatures into a rage, changing their attack patterns from a few occasional blasts of venom to a far more aggressive head-on approach. Once exposed, the chameleons will rush Samus, forcing her to dash quickly to either side to evade their highly damaging attacks. Fortunately, only the injured chameleon will go berserk, so it's not too difficult to take them down one at a time.

Although the new demo didn't offer much new insight into the play mechanics, the graphics looked markedly improved over the game's last showing. While this could simply be a function of the televisions being used at each respective demo, the latest showing of the game seems to incorporate more a lot more visual flash than before -- more reflections on Samus' armor, and more dramatic highlights as well. It's still unlikely to be mistaken for a game on a high-def system, but between its fast action and Nintendo's promise of an emphasis on exploration and isolation, Other M should be a satisfying play for Wii fans when it arrives at the end of August.

But he acknowledged the exploration aspect, so I'm really happy there. There's no way it's gonna be any more explorable than Metroid Fusion though.

The part where he talks about making games fun and easy for parents and kids sounds more like something he'd say about Wario Ware than Metroid.

I don't know, he seems to really love the character and franchise so I have always liked to hear his thoughts.

Also that isn't untrue. Yes Retro made Metroid Prime, but Sakamoto's team hasn't released anything on console's for a long time, I don't see why this means he doesn't recognize the Prime games.

He wasn't really involved in those so they aren't part of his series. I find it astonishing enough that the Prime games still influenced his game, I guess that's all due to Team Ninja though, not Sakamoto.

In all fairness, it has been a few years since Prime 3 released. Just sayin'...

This game looks really cool. I like the seamless feel of switching between 3rd person, first person and cutscenes (not the samus and friends cutscene but the iguana scene). This is the type of metroid game I'd like to play currently. I played prime 1 and enjoyed it a lot but after that I lost all interest in FP metroids.

The section with the armored guys was weird but there probably isn't too much of that past the intro. My prediction is samus loses contact with friends so you can have some alone time. Occasionally a faint radio transmission will come in and you have to go to that area and see what happened but you don't regain contact till the middle and end of the game. Thats how I'd do it anyway.

Looks to me like with the way samus moves she should have a sword for close quarters and act like a ninja <cough cough>...instead, she has a gun and has to stop, go into first person and shoot if you want to hit your target more than a couple of times before running smack dab right into your target.

Or maybe he could have stopped running while shooting.

I guess I'm getting more acceptive towards Other M focusing on story.

On one hand I think it's really nice. When Sakamoto explains how he wants to show what kind of personality there is in a woman who has been fighting all her life, makes me really excited for more story. But on the other hand, the way that there have been minimal story telling, and only(mostly) story telling through gameplay in metroid games is what made them so great.

Oh well it's always nice with a little change, I'm defintely excited about it and have faith that it's gonna deliver.

I'm exactly on the same boat.

It's a different type of metroidian design. It's depth comes from contained room exploration rather than exploitative gameplay in an interconnecting world.

That bothered me too. Hopefully there will be a wait to remaining stationary in the 2d view.

Why not just stop before running into them and just keep shooting while standing stationary? No need to go into 1st person.

Guess I picked a good time to actually start getting into the Metroid series :D

So far I beat Super Metroid last summer, and in the past month I went through Fusion and Zero Mission my roommate had laying around. Currently working on Metroid II. I'm afraid of the original Metroid lol. Debating on going through the Primes. I heard mixed reviews on those.

Regardless, I'm really looking forward to playing this!

Pick up the Prime series, Ryn. The first game is phenomenal, and the second one is good despite the often irritating dual world dynamic. I haven't played the third one yet, though.

Can't wait for it show up in Europe. 24th of September, please be true :(

Wait, what?

I've preordered it at work, and it states the release date in the UK is 27th August. Should I cancel it? :lol fuck.

Prime 1 is one of my top 3 or 4 favorite games ever.

It's basically like playing super metroid in 3d, looking through samus's eyes. They even manage to capture elements of the platforming, despite the first person perspective, and the exploration element is very strong.

If this new metroid even comes close to prime 1, it will be an incredible achievement IMO, and right now, I'm not expecting it to be quite as good TBH.

All of them are first person? I'll give em a shot, which means I also get to load up on motion sickness pills. Yay me. Come to think of it I think my boyfriend has prime laying around the house here somewhere.

Whos the composer for this game?

Same one from the prime series I hope?

Not sure. He's working on Donkey Kong Country. It'd be silly not to enlist Yamamoto though.

I want to see another trailer with a bit more action

This trailer just has samus running around (and yes it is very smooth) but i want to see some battles =S

Composer is Kuniaki Haishima, making Other M his first game work according to Wikipedia

His personal site says he also worked on

Ultraman for PS1
Kowloon's Gate for
Record of Lodoss War
Doko Demo Issho Toro and the Shooting Star
Siren 2

And some PC game called Ma.ri.a (looks like some sort of horror game?)

The first Prime is amongst the best videogames ever made unless you are totally put off by it being in First Person.
I was initially put off by it being in First Person too, but it's amongst the best games ever made so it doesn't matter.

While I enjoy Metroidvanias and Prime this seems a little off to me. I would have thought that a marriage of the two would be right up my alley but the choice to integrate a story has really put me off. I liked the other Samus aspect of Fusion, that was enough to keep me tuned in during exploration and scanning Talon IV to unravel the story was also great. This is just way too in my face so to speak.

Bring MP1 Samus back. How am I to believe that this pretty little thing has been fucking shit up for the last 20 years?

It looks like you have to press the dpad in the direction you want to shoot which would force you to move toward your target.

Random observation but the area in this gameplay video (skip to 2:10 or so, it's a long corridor) looks oddly similar to the Metroid bit in the Super Smash Bros. Melee intro. cutscene (skip to :25). It'd be funny to see Ridley burst through the wall in Other M at that part.

And yeah, I know, that Melee scene is referencing Super Metroid. I just found the two areas extremely similar.

On the whole Sakamoto and Prime thing, it is weird that he's so dismissive of the trilogy. It's like he goes out of his way to dismiss it or at the very least, point out how he wasn't involved with its development.

It doesn't really hurt my feelings and I'm certainly excited that the series is back in his hands, but it wouldn't hurt to at least pretend like the Prime series happened. :p

Does it feel full 3D, or more grid 3D with branching paths? Full 3D with a d-pad seems like it would be extremely awkward.

EXCITE as a mofo about this either way, of course.
