Metroid Prime trilogy director: 'Everything we do sucks'

It's one thing to be critical of your work, but if he can't recognize why the games are universally loved and praised by almost everyone who plays them, then how can I take his future efforts seriously? The fact that he apparently doesn't understand why all three Metroid Prime games were so utterly amazing makes me think that his upcoming Batman game is going to suck.

That's a bit sad that he never feels proud of his work... He directed some of the most critically acclaimed games ever made. (I also feel a bit sad for him considering he left Retro to have more creative freedom, only to end up making a Batman Spin-off...)

Id rather see a director who can only see faults than one who can only see his own "Vision". Folks who see problems that are in charge tend to spend their time trying to correct them because they are paying attention to what is actually happening and not just to their magical fantasy perfect game that they believe is somehow gonna happen if they keep believing in what they are doing.

I trust critical people.

I think it's just part of the process for a lot entertainment creators. Every time I write a screenplay I can't stand the plot or characters by the end of it. It takes months before I can look back fondly on it at all, if even.

I suppose I can see where some people don't like 2, but IMO it's basically the best game ever. GameCube is home to my two favorite games ever, this and RE4.

I thought prime 1 was one of the greatest games ever made, hated prime 2 and thought prime 3 needed to be more than just another prime game with waggle(although prime 3 is very good).

All artistic and creative people feel this way about their work, if you don't critique yourself you can't get better.

i know it reuses areas, but...Prime 2 was so complex. push past the early bits and you have a really great game, was surprised to see so many fans of the series lay into it

Seems like the non-Prime fans would lay into it. Echoes seems tailor made for obsessive Prime fans who memorized every inch of Tallon IV and wanted a far greater challenge.

Talented people are always super critical of their own work.

Until they know they have done something really good, and thats what Metroid Prime is. What he is doing know is false modesty, and that is as bad as thinking your thing is awesome when it really sucks. Its good to critique your own work, in fact is necessary, but you need to know when to stop also and say what you did is really good sometimes.

Even with that, I agree with his opinion of Metroid Prime 2, its a really divisive game and not as good as the loving part paint it.

He might genuinely think Metroid Prime sucks.

The wiimote control was great. The only thing that made MP3 bad was the terrible NPCs and story-driven progression. Those god-awful character designs make me not trust Retro with a new IP.

Kind of agree. I also disliked the overcharge beam mechanic stuff, just a really dumb concept. Boss fights were awful thanks to that.

Man, remember how savagely hyped GAF was pre-launch? All the Mother brain footage in the teasers...then the game had almost none of it.

Most artists find flaws in their work. With that said, his statements really undermine the efforts of everyone at Retro involved on the projects which is a shitty thing to do.

I understand the whole "you are your harshest critic" mentality, but I honestly think he's just being melodramatic/controversial for the sake of it here.

Nobody can actually think the Metroid Prime trilogy 'sucks', can they? Not to your personal taste, sure. But suck? Naw son.

Then he doesnt value himself enough. As I say, is good and necessary to criticice your own work, but you need also to know when to praise yourself.

True. Sound like what my art teacher told me before.

A lot of people say Prime sucks. Every game has its detractors and fans. Even Sonic 2006.

It's like when you make a gif and everyone thinks it's funny and reposts it but you keep seeing that one tiny flaw that nobody else would ever notice and it drives you insane

I must disagree with Pacini...The Prime games are masterpieces even as they are. But yes, I can see why he just sees them for everything that didn't happen. All 3 games had a shit ton of things cut out or changed during development. See MamaRobotnik's topic for details.

All 3 are classics...Prime being the best, but Prime 2 I've come to appreciate more for it's challenge and daring to be different than other Metroid games.

If you watch the left side, for some reason the background blacks out at the end of the thumbs up part. Drives me crazy. I should take out that frame of the GIF, and re-upload and hope it catches on.

The Metroid Prime series sucks, and the Metroid series in general sucks other than the first game.

fixed lol

I'd like to say am a fan of sucking. I know that may be too modern for you guys.

War Z for example - never fucking sucks. Ever. Not even when you take it on holiday.

People are really getting onto him for this? I understand where he's coming from. Sometimes you just get caught up in wanting something to be so good and being such a perfectionist you only see the flaws. It's irrational, sure, but it also means you keep a sharp eye on your work and don't get sloppy. There's no way he's the only person who worked on the games who thinks like this.

In other related news, designer Tom Ivey left Retro last month and just joined Armature. Ivey was with Retro for about nine years.

Read the OP people.

And yeah creative types are like this. For example, I see my own drawings as pure shit no matter how hard I practice or do my thing :b

I totally see where he is coming from. When you go knee deep in a project, after a while all you see is the crappy things about it.

And I still feel disappointed getting a 96 on a Class Project for example. Yeah I did great, But I could have improved the flaws if I put in more effort. And my god everything involving my gaming PC is the worst, being a perfectionist with that is painful and expensive.
