MGS2: Substance HD European Extreme difficulty. What the heck is this?!

For the first Tengu fight, i learned you can just run to the end of the corridor without killing anyone, and you only have to fight the final wave. Saves you a bit of frustration.

Solidus fight is basically Father Gascoigne on steroids, you need BB skills for that fight. It can be done though... ive done it.

I actually almost finished EE. I beat all the bosses and the Metal Gears, but I wasn't able to survive Solidus shocking you on Arsenal.

Hell even my rugby player flatmates couldnt help me.

EE was added as an extra for the long waiting of EU customers. Anyway Japan back in day used to ramp up difficulty for their european releases, japanase players had basically an "easier game". This happened several times in Resident Evil titles too.

I think the reasoning for MGS is a bit more unique though.

Most of the time, (As is the case with your RE example.) they increased the difficulty in the western release so that people couldn't complete them on rentals, which were not a thing in Japan. After all, usually they didn't just add difficulties, instead they completly changed the base difficulty, and there was no way to play the original difficulty mode. (And in the first RE for example, they removed auto-aim from the western version, even though the combat was designed around it.)

In MGS2, (Or the first MGS for that matter, were the Japanese version only had one difficulty.) it's really just "We've got some time before the international release hits...what new features could we possibly add?", so they add new difficulties on top of the old. The reasoning is a bit more "noble", however silly that might sound.

What if I told you that you can skip the final wave of the first fight as well?

You can glitch through the door.

It is very hard to do consistently but it does work on the HD Collection.

Anyone got a video of this?

I managed to do that on PS2 years ago. It's hard as hell, and it takes many attempts. Hardest parts are the whole Arsenal area, because they can kill Snake so damn fast... you have to shoot him with the M9 to get him to sleep while you fight with every tengu. And then the coolant trick lol

Also, in some struts like E and D, the moment you enter them, an enemy goes "is there somebody there?" and you have to react fast.

It's hard even if you don't go for Big Boss rank. There are no rations, there are more enemies, with wider vision, that inflict more damage, etc. MGS3 EE isn't as hard, but it is still challenging.

Now when I play MGS2, I sweat so much when discovered, I haven't recovered since lol

This person did it on SoL.

Extreme
100% Dog Tags
Big Boss Rank
Didn't use any of the 8 allowed saves.

Apparently you cannot do dog tags on European Extreme because there ARE no dog tags on that mode. Just regular Extreme.

I got nearly all the way to the very end but got stopped dead in my tracks at the point where you have to tap "O" for like a minute straight. No matter what I did, I could not beat it. It's the last thing you do before the final boss encounter. What a shitty, shitty thing to get stuck on, defeated by a god damn QTE.

Oh, didn't know it was for rental. Rental was never an option here (yep, some stores did that, but it was like one store between 100 cities, lol).

I remember renting MGS1, that game had its own "anti-rental" DRM. I spent hours trying to "Examine" the MO Disc like you would examine inventory items in Resident Evil 1, because Meryl's codec freq was on the back of the "CD case". Got me good on that one, Kojima.

I ended up just manually checking each frequency until i found it. Luckily it was one of the first ones lol

Never thought about it in that way but it as probably antirental tech too lol.

I put off having sex with the japanese exchange student living with us because I didnt want to pause The Ends boss fight on European Extreme.

You could just call Campbell a bunch of times and Meryl's frequency will be automatically added to your list.

Though there's no special dialogue to indicate this, or anything else really. It's just there when you check after a while.

Or you could just go through all frequencies one at a time, it takes like less than a minute if you start at 140:01. Why I didn't do that, instead of going back to the store where I rented the game to check out the box...I'll never know.

I beat Euro Extreme a couple years ago (and got the Platinum trophy, VR missions were the hardest part). Tough, sure, but I had fun!

... Except for one part. The choking scene with Solidus. THAT was absurd. It's probably the part that gave me the most trouble, no joke. Other than that I guess the Vamp fight was annoying, the final phase mainly.

Persevere and you'll get there. If I could beat it, you can too. :)

This thread has reminded me of the trouble I went through to do this back on the PS2. I think Fat Man was the worst for me, the timing on defusing those bombs was ridiculously strict.

If you think that's bad then you should try the RAY fight. There's about 20 or so of them? I had to do it with no space to take a hit (if I got hit once I bled to death afterwards) so everything had to be done absolutely perfectly in terms of timing.

Haha awesome

I'd like to try fighting 20 rays at one time , they should do a snapshot mode for moments like this.
Is there a boss rush mode for EE ?

Frankly I kind of suck at MGS, I got to the Olga fight and gave up, but apparently that was the hardest part only matched by the Harrier?

I couldn't imagine the cover E.E. with the sniper part with limited supplies and no Snake, I hate that part. I'm replaying MGS2 right now and I am so bad, I forgot so much shit.

Will MGSV TPP have European Extreme difficulty?

I've been wondering this for months,GZ on hard was not that challenging, and you only have a trank gun and empty magazine clips.
There better be some Extreme/EExtreme mode or some hardcore stuff because if not,TPP is gonna be the easiest in the series considering the large number of tools at your disposal.

No, Olga is not the hardest boss in E.E. Fatman, Arsenal Tengus, and MG Ray are all harder than her. She can be glitched out and cheesed, in fact. Harrier is not bad once you nail pattern.

Play the vr missions to refresh your memory :)

I've beaten Extreme but never tried European Extreme. Nothing was too bad except the Metal Gear Rays, fuck that shit. I always thought it was 23 too and not 20, interesting.

I'm doing an MGS replay to get ready for Phantom Pain and I decided to try European Extreme.

I never had the original Substance, so I'm new to this difficulty, but I figured let me try. The Souls games have made a more persistent gamer and I didn't want to sleepwalk through this game as I remember the default was rather easy.

I'm at the tanker and I do notice the guards are more aggressive, but I know the routes.

But then I get to Olga and she one shots me....

....

I try again, same thing.

I think to myself, this can't be right?

But it is.

I don't care about difficulty spoilers, so what else does European Extreme has in store?

Honestly, I might just go back to Hard as I can only imagine the Vamp fight and his little projectiles. Do those one shot too?

The Harrier Battle is the most toughest thing I have ever faced in my entire life. It's basically Nintendo hard. i don't think most kids will ever beat it.

Haha awesome

It's extremely boring actually. They've got a simple pattern. Your biggest worry is not having your mind wander.

Pound for pound Fatman takes the cake for hardest boss.
