Microsoft discontinung XBL service for Xbox 1

It's a win-win situation for Microsoft. Halo 2 players will finally have to succumb to Halo 3 and go buy a 360, and with the old Live stopped Microsoft can work on improving the current Live service as they don't have to have legacy support for the old XBox. More than 100 friends? Clan support maybe?

In fact, are there many people here that still play on the old XBox Live service?

HOLY CRAP I DID NOT SEE THAT ABOUT DISABLING ALL ORIGINAL XBOX GAMES AS WELL.

I SPENT ALL THAT TIME BUILDING A SOLID COLLECTION JUST FOR THEM TO CANCEL?!

Jesus Christ...

What? :lol XBL for the original Xbox is going down. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course it affects Xbox games regardless if they're XBO or actual retail Xbox titles.

Edit: I see, it seems you are misunderstanding the announcement. I don't think the XBO service is going down, but XBOs with XBL support are also affected by the deactivation of XBL. So no online MP, leaderboards, etc.

My friends were just bragging to me the other day about how their XB games would never shut down because they were peer-to-peer. I guess the XB1 was server hosted?

Are there still people playing RallySport 2 on XBoxLive?
Its not on the 360 b/c list, this would be the time to play the game before the plug for Live is pulled on the original XBox.

So, um... what about the hurricane packs for Ninja Gaiden and other similar content? Should we download and keep them there in the HDD or else they'll be lost forever?
Doesn't mention anything about download support. Seems strictly about 'live aware' related features, so those will likely still be there.

Peer to peer still requires a matching server. That's what MS is taking down.

For anyone bothering to freak out, you could still play online on xbox via xlink or something of that sort.

Gotta make sure to get my fill of Crimson Skies if there are still people playing.

You still need central servers for matchmaking.

Oooh, no more MechAssault :( Ah well.

Though I hope they at least make the game updates and map downloads available somewhere else.

It's okay, your heart rhythm will return to normal shortly. :D

Still remember the first day I got LIVE. Ordered it online, got the code, waited a few days for my headset.

Good fucking times, man. Love me some motherfucking Xbox. Basically was the only ninja in the hood that believed in MS back then.

Jay Allard all over my face.

if this means more than 100 friends, i'm in!

hey most of these games work with xlink and xbconnect etc guys, so many of them can still be played... when the 360 service shuts down in a few years, there will be no hope.

p2p games need a way to connect

either a matchmaking service like XBL

or some way to enter an IP directly

Interesting. So we can probably assume that Live on the 360 will be getting a massive overhaul this year to go with Natal.

No doubt we'll see at E3. Can't wait.

The nostalgia factor makes this sad, but at least some upgraded Live features will emerge from the aftermath.

Would suck if this happens every generation in the future. But i hope both this-gen PSN and Live games stays online even when next Xbox and PS4 is released. Although i do understand that its the devs. themselves who controls the servers.

But i guess that in 2014 it will be enough with like 1/20 of the servers in 2009 to keep up a community of 5 000 COD4 players for instance.

Regarding the whole old games online, i played R:FOM the other day. It feels so empty and quiet. Almost abandon, a weird mix of absolute HC players hanging around and very lost noobs.

If we are going Minority Report, there needs to be a ton more stuff on there worth scrolling, I think. Something similar to how the PS3 web browser works with several pages open.

Something cool.

It's just the XBox live aspect of the games I believe, it sounds like you'd still be able to play them, just not signed in to XBL..

Of course if you just bought them to play MP with your mates, it is a pain in the ass, and I hope when they say 'oppertunities', they will make some recompense to these people..

Release Halo 2 updated on XBLA with updated LIVE support.

Problem solved.
Why waste an XBLA release on Halo 2 when they could do the same for Halo 1. Infact I'd resub up to gold for Halo 1 mp online.

You need to calm down, you almost sent me into a panic there. :(

Anyway I'm more surprised that Xbox Live for Xbox 1 is still active to be honest.

No more Phantom Dust? :( Time for them to make Phantom Dust 2...and by that i mean repackage the same game on X360 with a few new maps and everything the first game has.

I thought Xbox Live was just Xbox Live on all platforms.

It's a shame they couldn't just keep them going but it's been a long time for the since the switch to 360 and if it's what they need to do to improve Live and extend the friends list then I'm all for it.

But then here's hoping this creates a Live Arcade version of Halo 1/Halo 2 online like they have done with Call of Duty, maybe even a Splinter Cell online based on the old games too.

MS wouldn't even release it in the US, so I'm sure they'll get right on that.

That's messed up a bit I guess....I hope Tecmo put's out some kind of DOA2U on 360 or something...

Yeah I need to crack this game out and get a few matches in before this happens.

Online gaming scares me but it is weird to know that they are still people out there that still have Xbox Live for the originals. Maybe now I can buy a XBOX for 20 dollars now and learn homebrew.

HOW COULD THEY DO THIS TO ME

I haven't touched my original Xbox in years—ever since the disk drive went wonky. But yeah, this sort of feels like the end of an era.

This is why matchmaking is a piece of crap.

Stuff like this pushes me even further towards the PC than buying games on console. The fact that in 5-6 years after the release of the Xbox 720, Microsoft are going to do the same thing to Live on 360 and a bunch of games will be neutered.

There's no correlation for you to suggest that.

The 360 is clearly a more open format than the original XBOX was. I doubt it would hinder the 720 in any way.

We have a little over two months to play a last few games, huh.
So GAF, what would be the Xbox 1 games to play online ?
Titles I've seen mentionned until now :

Burnout 3 Takedown
Burnout Revenge
Conker Live Reloaded
Crimson Skies
Dead or Alive Ultimate
Halo 2
Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast
Phantom Dust
Rallisport 2
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Steel Batallion
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection

Every year I have to pay 50 bucks to get my online multiplayer fix on the 360. If I don't, Microsoft doesn't let me play whatever multiplayer mode that's being afford by a given third party.

So who's holding whose balls here?

Any supposed evidence that 360 Live is more open than Xbox1 Live is a strawman of that fact that Microsoft is and always will be the gatekeeper of this service.

MS is cutting off support for games almost no one plays online anymore, most of which you can still play online through other means if you have a group of friends willing to do so, which is what it'll take because no one is playing these games anymore. Even if MS does kill online support for 360 games in the far flung future, which is where it will be with console cycles as long as they've become, then it still won't matter because no one will be playing those games, especially the people bitching about it.

Your strawman ignores that 3rd parties, particularly EA and Sega, have shown no hesitation to shut down the online component of their 360 games. The decision is dictated by the ones who manage the servers and how much it matters financially to them to keep them running. That $50 a month means MS is motivated to keep their servers up for as long as those services are being reasonably used.

I was talking about software wise... Yes it's still a closed system in regards to it basically only being for the 360 (and a lil on PC) as well as the 50
35
dollars a year charge.

If you look at the XBOX and the 360 the XBOX's OS stayed relatively the same with little upgrades. The 360 had a ton of upgrades for the dash, then it got the NXE and even that has been given drastic upgrades. I don't think the 360's technology is that much of a hinder to XBOX Live at all and I don't think it will effect future systems.

For mainly nostalgia's sake, and to have a couple more good memories of the game, I'll be playing Halo 2 at least one more time before it's shut down for good.

So does this cut off access to DLC or just P2P multiplayer? If its multiplayer mode its understandable if undesirable, if it also includes DLC then that's one hell of an awful precedent they're setting. With no official or legal way to back up content and the mechanical nature of HDDs meaning its a matter of when they break not if, all that content will be lost for good in a few years. That's an awful precedent to set if its the case.

$50 per year from millions of people plus advertising revenues, and that can't even buy support for legacy titles?

First they came for 50 dollars, and I did not speak out—because I had the money;
Then they came for the Dashboard, and I did not speak out—because I had Netflix;
Then they came for the Game Demos , and I did not speak out—because I had a Gold Account;
Then they came for the Legacy Live Games—and there was no one left on XBOX to speak out for them.

Wow... FUCK you Microsoft. That is so fucking bullshit. They better remake Halo 2 or something. Seriously what the fuck. Damn PS3 users have it made and they don't even have to pay for their online.
