Microsoft expands network of TV-like ads on Xbox Live

Still find it funny that people are still salty about this.

Edit: I mean timed exclusive map packs.

People on here are salty not about Microsoft getting the DLC first but that they're wasting a lot of money doing it and justify it by saying that's what the 60$ live fee pays for. What about the people who don't care about that and just want to play online?

Well, Activision says they want part of the pie, Microsoft buys exclusivity, prices increase. If you're not a COD player then you don't gain anything but are still asked to pay more.
I get that part, but I was mostly commenting on the deal itselve. Other companies do it, often get praised for it, but people keep acting like somebody backstabbed them with the deal. One month isn't really something to get angry about.

I think its because we all literally paid for it.

Microsoft is the only company that basically increased the cost of their service for the exclusivity. Sony often gets praised because exclusivity there often times means that you'll get some content for free simply because Somy threw some money at them.

In general, console exclusive content (even if times exclusive) should not be praised by anyone ever. It's bullshit.

I am talking more on the timed stuff. I agree with you though, exclusive content getting praised is bullshit.

It's more that they explicitly stated that the timed exclusive CoD map packs were the reason for the XBLA price increase.
I really hate how badly people mess up these abbreviations. Arcade didn't even exist beyond the very end of the Xbox's life anyway.

And I actually wonder (or naively hope?) that this is part of a trend to move towards offering the entertainment apps for free. It may fly now since everyone has an Xbox, but with the next generation I imagine people wanting to use just the apps are going to start looking more seriously at other devices instead if that's all they really want. Or stick with the 360 I guess, but I imagine when facing $60 per year most people are going to start realizing they may as well just buy a Roku for the equivalent of less than two years.

Why the fuck am I paying +$50 for their service and there still railing ads up the ass for no good reason. I'm just gonna let my Live account expired this year and just stick with my PSN+ account. At least, Sony rewards their members pretty damn well and you don't need a paid account to access other services or demos unlike Microsoft.

Pretty terrible news.
MSoft is making bank, large subscriber base, successful ad implementation, revenue just flowing in everywhere, and the other two console manufacturers are just staring at the possibilities of what we'll swallow.

I for one refuse to be advertised to like some kind of goddamned monkey in a cage whose only purpose is to make money to give to Microsoft and their crony business partners. Fuck Xbox Live, fuck the dashboard, fuck the Xbox, and no pity for the docile couch cows who, by tolerating such abuse, make it a sustainable business practice for Microsoft.

Have some self respect. Game on a PC.

I actually feel this way

Well, that's simply hilarious.

Cable has ads, Magazines have ads, Comic books have ads and you also have pay for them. I don't see your point here.

Not that I'm defending MS, but that's not really a strong argument.

I don't have a problem with ads but when competing services that are free don't throw them in your face like MS does, it feels out of place. Plus with cable the ads aren't always on and magazines...well who even reads magazines anymore lol. I don't have a problem with MS tbh. I like xbox and think xbl is pretty awesome apart from the ads

Wake up to the morning radio. Ads.
Walk outside to the bus stop. Billboards and signage along the way.
Bus Arrives. Its one giant ad.
Walk on to the bus, and every seat has an ad over it.
Come home after a long day's work. Take care of stuff. Relax a bit.
Turn on your Xbox. Ads.
Sign in with your premium Gold Account. Ads.

I get enough ads in my life, and it'd be nice if for once if there was something I could enjoy without being sold to. Video games used to be one of those things.

The fact that the Gold fee entitles you only to peer to peer multiplayer and access to many premium storefronts makes it more cynically exploitative than most other media out there.

To be fair, this does not apply to games themselves. It is more the services on the console.

Would not be suprised though if the started doing in-game ads.

I'll have to agree.

Also, when was the last time you bought something because of a standard ad... ever?

A lot of it has to do with the fact these services, with the same ads, are for free on practically every other devices that does streaming. Or at least you don't pay TWICE to access them like with XBL Gold. Plus it gets kind of exasperating at the main screens, no one else has done this for consoles, and still hasn't unless it's something more directly related (some Vita live areas) or relatively easy to avoid you if you find it offensive enough (PS3 setting for where to boot up).

Also, when was the last time you bought something because of a standard ad... ever?
Some food commercials. They're probably also the most effective ads for that reason, just make the food look tasty and people will remember the next time they're hungry and in the store or by your restaurant. Of course these are also cheap (usually), unlike something like car ads that I'll completely ignore and probably not keep in mind at all when shopping for one, and at best something like a game or movie ad will make me look into it more rather than IMMEDIATELY BUY... but then that does make it a success, doesn't it?

Again I know the business reason, I am commenting on rage that is still carried around by users of other platforms.

As an Xbox 360 owner who doesn't play Call of Duty, I find it pretty ridiculous that they want me to pay $10 more for timed exclusivity on content that I don't even care about. Even if I did care about, why should I care if Microsoft has exclusivity? That $10 isn't making me get it early, it's just making the PS3 get it late.

There you go, since you needed the entire concept spelled out in detail.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me either way. I'm not paying $50 for gold, I'm not paying $60 for gold, I'm not paying $10 for gold. The fact that they charge for gold only makes me buy my games for the PS3, despite the fact that I generally prefer the 360 controller.

Yeah, I made a fucking typo. I've also been up for 22 hours.

Sorry, just seems like for every person that makes an honest mistake there's ten others who seriously confuse the two.
Most people who complain either don't have the system, don't pay for Gold, or don't use the apps where they appear and won't be affected by it.
To be honest, I consider this relatively benign compared to the dashboard ads, THIS is the standard on most Internet streaming, they didn't name Netflix, and some (like Hulu) still advertise with a paid membership anyway. I'm mainly just annoyed at how they still arbitrarily keep this crap behind Gold and expect/hope it bites them on the ass royally if they don't change eventually.

PC to HDTV with Xbox Controller is a good alternative for some that just looks better and better each day.

The only reason I still have Gold is for Reach/ODST Firefight and a few co-op modes here and there with the party system. Everything else is PC only for me nowdays and I couldn't recommend it more.

I recently bought a second PS3 because for Netflix. Here's something to think about. If you had two 360's, you still could not watch Netflix on both at the same time because you have to sign into your gold account. On the PS3 you can either sign into different FREE accounts on each PS3 or just use the same account as it will sign out the first one but it won't stop Netflix from working.

It amazes me that no one ever talks about this.

I predict they will still have used games next gen, but playing a used versions will switch it to the ad version once you connect to the net to verify the game before playing. Ads before starting the game, ads in the game. Ads on your toilet paper.

At this rate the 360 successor will be called "adbox 365" for being able to bring you your favourite ads every day. Glad I'm not paying for gold. I wonder if that adblock DNS trick still works.

People keep bringing up cable. When people say they don't want to pay for ads they're obviously talking gaming-wise. Steam and PSN are free and Live isn't because COD map packs and ESPN bullshit. That's why people complain what is hard to understand about that.

If there was a situation where there were 3 cable companies and 2 of them were free or didn't have ads, but 1 of them did and charged extra, obviously people would rage. edit - This still isn't comparable though because cable isn't ripping you off in the same way Microsoft does. Microsoft forces people to pay to use their OWN internet connection (which they're already paying for) to play P2P with other people. There is no defense.

Why would they rage on the third one? Wouldn't they be content to just use the other two services and forget the third if it was so horrible?

I think these ads make sense, unlike the damn clutter on the xbox dash. The dash is so slow these days. It's terrible in so many ways. I actually dislike looking at demo's or browsing the marketplace, since it's such a damn mess. In the previous dash I didn't even mind the adds since you still had your core options easy accessibly and fast. Luckily my friends who I game with seem to make a shift to pc gaming(sadly most of them are on underpowered laptops for now).

Since I'm slowly getting done with Gears. I'm pretty sure I won't re-up my subscription. Unless everyone and their mom buys Halo 4 and that game turns out amazing. I hate the xbox atm, but I fucking love Gears/Halo. :|

People are talking about cable because this news is about Microsoft introducing ads to their Live programming that resembles cable.

Lots of complaints here but you know what?

you will pay for live AND see those ads.

There is nothing you can do.

NOTHING.

Nope. This year was the year I stopped paying for Live. I never play online multi-player, and got tired of the service. Ended up selling me 360 and picking up a PS3 instead. I put that subscription money in PS+ instead, and am loving it.

For me, I just got tired of supporting a company that seems to be moving farther away from my personal gaming values with each year of this console cycle. Moves like this one just reinforce my belief that I made the right decision. I most likely won't be buying their next console, and will instead invest that money into a pc/steambox.

Absolutely. When my Live subscription runs out, that is it but that has been planned for a while, this just reinforces it. If the PS3 is going to drop to $199 then the competing 360 product is a joke (360 4GB vs PS3 160GB). Add in that Sony isn't shoving ads down your throat, free online play and free app usage and the 360 is looking pretty crappy.
