Still find it funny that people are still salty about this.
Edit: I mean timed exclusive map packs.
It's more that they explicitly stated that the timed exclusive CoD map packs were the reason for the XBLA price increase.

I get that part, but I was mostly commenting on the deal itselve. Other companies do it, often get praised for it, but people keep acting like somebody backstabbed them with the deal. One month isn't really something to get angry about.Well, Activision says they want part of the pie, Microsoft buys exclusivity, prices increase. If you're not a COD player then you don't gain anything but are still asked to pay more.
I think its because we all literally paid for it.I get that part, but I was mostly commenting on the deal itselve. Other companies do it, often get praised for it, but people keep acting like somebody backstabbed them with the deal. One month isn't really something to get angry about.
Again I know the business reason, I am commenting on rage that is still carried around by users of other platforms.I think its because we all literally paid for it.
Microsoft is the only company that basically increased the cost of their service for the exclusivity. Sony often gets praised because exclusivity there often times means that you'll get some content for free simply because Somy threw some money at them.I get that part, but I was mostly commenting on the deal itselve. I am talking more on the timed stuff. I agree with you though, exclusive content getting praised is bullshit.Microsoft is the only company that basically increased the cost of their service for the exclusivity. In general, console exclusive content (even if times exclusive) should not be praised by anyone ever. It's bullshit.
I really hate how badly people mess up these abbreviations. Arcade didn't even exist beyond the very end of the Xbox's life anyway. It's more that they explicitly stated that the timed exclusive CoD map packs were the reason for the XBLA price increase.

Seeing ads for a PAID service...
Well, that's simply hilarious.I for one refuse to be advertised to like some kind of goddamned monkey in a cage whose only purpose is to make money to give to Microsoft and their crony business partners. Fuck Xbox Live, fuck the dashboard, fuck the Xbox, and no pity for the docile couch cows who, by tolerating such abuse, make it a sustainable business practice for Microsoft.
Have some self respect. Game on a PC.
I actually feel this way
Seeing ads for a PAID service...
Cable has ads, Magazines have ads, Comic books have ads and you also have pay for them. I don't see your point here.
Not that I'm defending MS, but that's not really a strong argument.
Well, that's simply hilarious.
I get enough ads in my life, and it'd be nice if for once if there was something I could enjoy without being sold to. Video games used to be one of those things.

To be fair, this does not apply to games themselves. It is more the services on the console.I get enough ads in my life, and it'd be nice if for once if there was something I could enjoy without being sold to. Video games used to be one of those things.
Wake up to the morning radio. Ads.
Walk outside to the bus stop. Billboards and signage along the way.
Bus Arrives. Its one giant ad.
Walk on to the bus, and every seat has an ad over it.
Come home after a long day's work. Take care of stuff. Relax a bit.

Not exactly a new concept, you still get ads if you pay for cable or satellite.
But I will agree that more ads sucks![]()
A lot of it has to do with the fact these services, with the same ads, are for free on practically every other devices that does streaming. Or at least you don't pay TWICE to access them like with XBL Gold. Plus it gets kind of exasperating at the main screens, no one else has done this for consoles, and still hasn't unless it's something more directly related (some Vita live areas) or relatively easy to avoid you if you find it offensive enough (PS3 setting for where to boot up).Cable has ads, Magazines have ads, Comic books have ads and you also have pay for them. I don't see your point here.

Some food commercials. They're probably also the most effective ads for that reason, just make the food look tasty and people will remember the next time they're hungry and in the store or by your restaurant. Of course these are also cheap (usually), unlike something like car ads that I'll completely ignore and probably not keep in mind at all when shopping for one, and at best something like a game or movie ad will make me look into it more rather than IMMEDIATELY BUY... but then that does make it a success, doesn't it?Also, when was the last time you bought something because of a standard ad... ever?
How Microsoft are going to justify charging $60 a month next gen for constant unrelated ads, crappy game servers, and shitty deal of the weeks, I have no idea. This is disgusting.

These threads just go round in circles now... I will say this though, i don't mind the ads.
Sorry, just seems like for every person that makes an honest mistake there's ten others who seriously confuse the two.Yeah, I made a fucking typo. I've also been up for 22 hours.
To be honest, I consider this relatively benign compared to the dashboard ads, THIS is the standard on most Internet streaming, they didn't name Netflix, and some (like Hulu) still advertise with a paid membership anyway. I'm mainly just annoyed at how they still arbitrarily keep this crap behind Gold and expect/hope it bites them on the ass royally if they don't change eventually. Most people who complain either don't have the system, don't pay for Gold, or don't use the apps where they appear and won't be affected by it.
Just another reason to disconnect from the network ...
PC to HDTV with Xbox Controller is a good alternative for some that just looks better and better each day.Honestly, it doesn't matter to me either way. I'm not paying $50 for gold, I'm not paying $60 for gold, I'm not paying $10 for gold. The fact that they charge for gold only makes me buy my games for the PS3, despite the fact that I generally prefer the 360 controller.

And I actually wonder (or naively hope?) that this is part of a trend to move towards offering the entertainment apps for free. It may fly now since everyone has an Xbox, but with the next generation I imagine people wanting to use just the apps are going to start looking more seriously at other devices instead if that's all they really want. Or stick with the 360 I guess, but I imagine when facing $60 per year most people are going to start realizing they may as well just buy a Roku for the equivalent of less than two years.

Seeing ads for a PAID service...
uhhh... you listed three services that are painfully hurting for business
If there was a situation where there were 3 cable companies and 2 of them were free or didn't have ads, but 1 of them did and charged extra, obviously people would rage.
People are talking about cable because this news is about Microsoft introducing ads to their Live programming that resembles cable.People keep bringing up cable. When people say they don't want to pay for ads they're obviously talking gaming-wise. Steam and PSN are free and Live isn't because COD map packs and ESPN bullshit. That's why people complain what is hard to understand about that.
If there was a situation where there were 3 cable companies and 2 of them were free or didn't have ads, but 1 of them did and charged extra, obviously people would rage. edit - This still isn't comparable though because cable isn't ripping you off in the same way Microsoft does. Microsoft forces people to pay to use their OWN internet connection (which they're already paying for) to play P2P with other people. There is no defense.
Lots of complaints here but you know what?
you will pay for live AND see those ads.
There is nothing you can do.
NOTHING.
Nope. This year was the year I stopped paying for Live. I never play online multi-player, and got tired of the service. Ended up selling me 360 and picking up a PS3 instead. I put that subscription money in PS+ instead, and am loving it.
For me, I just got tired of supporting a company that seems to be moving farther away from my personal gaming values with each year of this console cycle. Moves like this one just reinforce my belief that I made the right decision. I most likely won't be buying their next console, and will instead invest that money into a pc/steambox.
