Microsoft finally admits almost all major Windows 11 core features are broken

I had to convice the company I work to block one windows update last month because it was making my pc completely unresponsible... God damm it MS, how the biggest software developer at the WORLD can create software with so minimal care ?!

Yeah, that 2.23% is gone for good, Microsoft is doomed.

Huh? I'm talking about for me. I'm not worried about anyone else.
And who said Microsoft is doomed?

It wasn't specifically directed at you, but I find it funny how people often bring up arguments like "I'm not going back" or "it's too late," as if the damage done to Windows' reputation by those bad patches had actually led to a real shift in the number of users.

Especially on forums like this one, where it seems like everyone is abandoning Windows.

The solution to Windows is becoming either

1) 128GB of RAM + daily reboots (I mean updates)
2) Use another non-Windows OS + Windows VM disconnected from the internet so you never have to update Windows.

Someone saying they are not going back to Windows isn't an argument that there is going to be some major shift away from Windows. Microsoft isn't sending out these emails because Window's reputation is good. If folks had an alternative they could turn to then that wasn't as expensive as Macs or as complex as Linux then I imagine a lot of folks would abandon Windows. Unfortunately that's not the case.

I have two machines that have been running on 11 for years now with little no issues at all... must be really lucky

Yeah, I feel like I must be using a different OS than many as I'm yet to encounter these core broken features.

that's just the nature of an OS that runs on an near infinite combo of different hardware parts.

I'd say the majority of people have no issues with Windows, but because literally billions of people use it on millions of different configurations, you get thousands of issues popping up every fay.

When does it eol?

They changed that didn't they?

I have also stayed on 10 bc windows traditionally is bad early on new revisions
October 13th is what they're saying right now for the end of their extended security patch support.

I won't be surprised if they push that date out for another year or two though. Windows 11 adoption has been slower than they expected. Cutting off a ton of machines and forcing them to be e-wasted is a really bad move. If they do push it, I won't bother upgrading. My Win 10 install has been rock solid with no issues.

Today, I got this email from MS (summed up using Ai):

This is a summary of the open letter from Pavan Davuluri (EVP of Windows + Devices) regarding upcoming improvements to Windows 11 based on user feedback.

The Big Picture

Microsoft is shifting its focus toward "Performance, Reliability, and Craft." The goal is to make Windows 11 feel faster, less intrusive, and more customizable, rather than just adding new features.

Key Upcoming Changes

  • Taskbar & Start: The top-requested feature is returning—you will soon be able to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen. They are also adding a smaller taskbar option.
  • Intentional AI (Copilot): Microsoft is scaling back "unnecessary" Copilot entry points in apps like Snipping Tool and Notepad to ensure AI is only integrated where it is actually useful.
  • Windows Updates: New controls will allow you to skip updates during initial setup, pause them for longer periods, and shut down or restart without being forced to install updates.
  • File Explorer: A major push to fix performance, specifically targeting faster launch times, reduced flickering, and better handling of large file transfers.
  • Less "Noise": Reducing distractions by streamlining device setup, simplifying the Widgets feed, and cutting down on unnecessary notifications.
  • Windows Insider Program: The program is being simplified with clearer "channels" and higher-quality builds so testers have a more stable experience.

Technical & Reliability Goals

  • Speed: Core UI elements (like the Start menu) are being moved to the WinUI3 framework to reduce lag.
  • Stability: Improvements to Bluetooth, USB, and printer connectivity to reduce crashes.
  • Biometrics: Enhancing Windows Hello for faster facial and fingerprint recognition, including better support for gaming handhelds (like the ROG Ally).
  • WSL: Better performance and networking for developers using the Windows Subsystem for Linux.

I think the new $600 Mac laptops are going to cause more of a noticeable drop in Windows usage than month-to-month fluctuations in Linux gaming usage. It might not be noticeable on Steam charts, but with the recent price increases broadly across the PC space, and the general headaches present with Windows, consumers are going to drift towards the vastly superior Mac experience especially at a cheaper price point. I barley hear anyone these days talk about how happy they are with the Windows experience except Microsoft boot lickers. The general consumer is at best ambivalent and at worst sick of Microsoft's shit.

That's who I think the emails are directed towards — people who are going to be enticed by Apple's clear attempt to grab additional market share.

" copilot please fix my windows install ".

Copilot proceeds to delete windows from the hard drive.

This would be one of the biggest reversals of the past 20 years on MS's part. They have been trying to force everyone on Earth to have a Microsoft Account for decades now because fuck you that's why

MS making all the right moves here with Win 11. Streamline and simplify the shit out of it for gaming / helix and remove all that bloat and unwanted services.

Just bought a MacBook Pro and it's crazy how much better it feels to use than Windows. Even iCloud is so much better than POS OneDrive that lags like shit.

The price difference isn't even what it used to be. I get for gaming Mac isn't a real option but I would suggest, if you can afford it, have a vidya PC and use a Mac for everything else. It's that much of a difference.

Microsoft trying to steer the sentiment in their favour while planning to get back to their usual garbage ways as soon as they feel they can get away with it again.

They've been doing this for 20 years straight and somehow the users still fall for it every single time.

I've been on this for a while now. Mac Mini is perfect for people who want to do personal use things at the desk where they game.

I am really considering fresh install of windows 10. I am tired of this shit.

What are the disadvantage? Is everything still supported ? Steam etc ?

I'm still confused why people think Winwdows 10 is better... it's the same shit, just with a different coat of paint.

the default settings are different I guess, but that can be fixed in a few minutes

Mainly you lose directstorage, some directx12 features (mesh shaders, less integrated hardware-level raytracing, weaker variable rate shading), better scheduler for modern CPUs (intel 12th gen+ & AMD Ryzen 7000/9000 series), and less tunable HDR.

Otherwise, Windows 10 supports everything else fine.

You can already do this, they just don't exactly advertise it. When I got my new PC I reformatted the old one with and installed Windows 11 without a Microsoft account, just used a local login.

Not to mentioned that Win10 was universally hated at one time and the only reason it's become fashionable to use now is because it's trendy to hate Windows 11.

Yeah I switched between systems few times over last few years.

And I always return to W11, for missing features like better game bar, support for Xbox series controller share button, auto HDR and expanded HDR controls.

But core system is more or less the same. //DEVIL// //DEVIL// everything should work fine but if you use anything I mentioned above you will be missing it.

I see people be annoyed with the right click menu... but that can be swapped back in 20 seconds.
or be annoyed with online searches... but that can be changed just as quickly.

my biggest issue was the task bar being locked to the bottom of the screen, while I have used a top of the screen task bar since at least 2009 or so.
that's the biggest issue I have with Windows 11, and apparently Microsoft will add the feature back this year... but I just installed windhawk and now my task bar is on the top 🤷 also took like a minute to do at most.
and while it's annoying that I needed a third party program for such a little feature, it's also something I had to do once and be done with it, so it's not a big deal.

We will fix all issues with windows 12. But will switch to a subscription model.

Windows Pass incoming.

I guess I am stuck with windows 11 then :/

Yup. I just keep Windows around for gaming. All the real work I might need to do is done on my Macbook

To be fair it would be better to pick up Apple Refurb MacBook Air M4 or even M3 vs Neo with that phone chipset, but yeah, a lot of people are going to gravitate to Mac. That said, for gaming while Mac is getting a bit better, it's still not amazing for the price.

Linux is still too difficult for most people. Shit can randomly veer into direction of f-by around in the terminal and with config files. 95% of Windows user base isn't going to do that.

I've had to tinker with my Linux Gaming installs far less than I ever did with Windows. I don't even have to manage my graphics card drivers anymore. I periodically restart my computer and Bazzite just updates them seamlessly without me having to do literally anything.

Most users who don't want to switch just can't be bothered to learn a different system. It's a bizarre learned helplessness where they'll complain about how bad Windows has gotten but are unwilling to move to something that is almost functionally the same but has different troubleshooting steps.

No one is going to be drifting do you realize windows is on 400 dollar laptops . There will always be cheap alternatives to windows because it's just an operating system. Not saying people will move to the cheaper Mac's but not like you think.

It's all they do, and people never learn. Microsoft is constantly, tirelessly looking for a way to screw over their users.

I think my pcs must be OP or something because I have two pcs both running win 11 and I've only had one main issue which I think is garbage and I guess not many will have it and that was with the Xbox store not patching games. Apart from that literally 0 issues. Also, I've not had that issue for months and not once on my living room SFF console replacement pc.

I'd love to give credit to Microsoft for deciding to undo the stupidity of forcing Copilot into apps like Notepad, but fact of the matter is that was their own stupidity. They shouldn't have had to have "feedback" to understand how stupid that shit was. I'll be impressed when they remove data gathering functions, allow offline local accounts and stop trying to force Windows default settings after the fact. That's not all they need to do, but it would be a good start.

personally not had many issues with Windows 11 except in the first year of release but it's been solid the last 4-5 years whatever it's been. it was the same for Windows 10 for me. i remember the first major update it got it caused a lot of issues. that said, it's still good to see Microsoft take on board feedback from people who aren't happy.

Is Windows perfect? No. but i'd happily use it every day over Linux. Trust me, i've tried countless times to make Linux my main OS but something always fucks up. If for some reason I decided to leave Windows then I'd just buy a Mac. Linux would be an absolute last resort.

It always annoys me how Windows is not backward compatible worth a crap.
I have to use dgvoodoo2 to run most old games because the DirectX is not backwards compatible.
