Microsoft gives a damn ‘bout your bad reputation on Xbox One

According to the article, it would take hundreds or thousands of immature idiots reporting you before that happened.

I foresee a fun new hobby for 4chan.

So it also takes hundreds of thousands of people reporting legitimate assholes, that isn't going to work.

Don't people abuse the reputation system? In a perfect world it would be used to weed out the annoying, obnoxious, racist people on Live, but most of the time I see people giving people bad reputations simply if they lose in an online match.

So many questions still...

Its taken care of.

Don’t worry about an arch enemy griefer, or even a group of the same, flooding you with hundreds of reputation-ruining complaints, either. “If it’s just the same people over and over complaining, we’ll take that feedback, but we’ll err on the side of safety,“ Dunn said. “We want that feedback from a broad set of users, so you have to play matches with a lot of different people. If there’s just someone who doesn’t like you and keeps reporting you and reporting you, that’s not going to dramatically change your reputation.”

Not all feedback is created equal, either. Players who the system identifies as having “better judgment” will have their complaints given more weight over time, Dunn said. If a certain player consistently complains only about people who eventually end up in the “avoid me” bucket, for instance, the algorithm can be relatively sure that person’s complaints have some merit. On the flip side, players who throw around tons of complaints that are rarely corroborated by others might see their complaints counting for less.

Also when you look at the other things they have mentioned during their E3 videos, they also take into account how recent you played with them- if even- and mark accordingly. If you never played against the person in your life, or it was a long time ago, they basically void the feedback. This way you can't have people getting their friends to gang up on someone else like you see today.

Sounds better than what's in place on the 360. Hope it works out properly.

On Xbox 360 I have never used voice chat, never sent text or voice messages to anyone not on my friends list, and never griefed anyone or exploited bugs. Also, no one has ever used this account other than me. Somehow my rep is at 83%. It seems to drop around 1% for each time someone reports you, which means for whatever reason, 17 people have reported me. (maybe more, I think it goes back up if someone 'prefers' you)

I blame random Halo/CoD idiots that didn't like getting killed by me. These are also the only games where I can jump in for a quick match, and after it's over get voice messages calling me names, or voice messages about "10th prestige lobbies".

So because my reputation is complete shit from beating people at fighting games and never using a mic I'd be thrown into a shit pile with other assholes.

Thats a great fucking idea.

I'm 89% avoided... I have no mic and I never talk trash be it with one or text messages. This system is flawed on 360 and will be even worse with the new X1 matchmaking.

Jealous idiots ruin it for others.

Same here. I have a profile that's 90% avoided and I never used my mic when I wasn't in a party.

Its just sore losers.

If you never use a mic, does it really matter whether you play against people on the bad list? You're most likely going to mute them and if their is this huge group of people with bad reps for being great at fighting games, perfect, then you can just play each other.

Does this mean the people who call me a faggot and file false reports against me will have even more power to spoil my XBL experience? Because all the current reputation system is good for is enabling jerks to troll and harass you after your matches end.

According to the article, it would take hundreds or thousands of immature idiots reporting you before that happened.
So basically it'll happen to every moderately active player within a couple of weeks.

The Xbox 360’s matchmaking service tries to match you with people of a similar reputation, but if it can’t find any, it will still pair you up with the miscreants. “It basically said, ‘At least you’re playing with somebody,’” as Dunn put it. That won’t be how it works on Xbox One. Instead, the SmartMatch system will try to “make sure you’re playing with people you can have a conversation with... that’s where reputation comes in.”
I don't get the thinking behind essentially having two Xbox Live communities. If good rep and bad rep players aren't allowed to ever play against each other, any game that isn't a blockbuster will have shorter online viability. Yes, the good rep experience will be better, but you'll also have to wait longer for matchmaking, and you'll start failing to find other folks to play with sooner. (Bad rep players, being less numerous, will have an even harder time finding opponents, but that's okay as long as reputations are deserved.)

With Smart Match, you can do whatever you want while Xbox One finds your perfect match. This means that less popular multiplayer modes and maps that have traditionally taken a long time to find players suddenly become playable. Because Snap mode is a core feature of Xbox One that lets you do two things at once, you no longer have to wait in lobbies while Xbox Live is matchmaking for you. One friend can even set up matches for your whole party.

While Xbox Live is matchmaking, you’re untethered and free to do what you want, like watch TV or check out your favorite website or apps while waiting for your next game. If you’re playing digital games, you can even play one game while Smart Match prepares a second. This freedom to break out of waiting in lobbies and do whatever you want is what separates Xbox One from systems that don’t have a way to instantly switch between tasks.

Looks like every disc being installed won't make a difference. Figured they would just ask you to put the disc in when it found the match. I'll be going all digital, but my friends won't. I guess they won't know what they are missing if this turns out to be useful.

Man, if this actually works it'll be awesome. Imagine being able to party up with people and not have to worry about a lousy party??? That would be a dream come true for a game like destiny. I'll have to see it to believe it though.

This would be great if it works. Hopefully though those hundreds or thousands of complaints necessary doesn't make it too difficult to weed out the jerks.

Just a question, not too familiar with online play, but can you ban someone from ever playing with you again? Like if someone was a jerk, you could just choose to never match up with that person again after the match?

Would almost be worth it to play for months... years even ... and then when they give you the "Super awesome always fair and legit" user/player tag go into games and find people that just..... bother you.... and report them for racism or something.

Practically an instant ban. Fear me mortals. FEAR MY REP!

This is one area I'm pretty confident Microsoft will atleast get the jump on Sony . Ms people
Have a large background in algorithms and software systems .

I was concerned when they announced this program a while back but the section I quoted above has me reassured. If the system actually calculates the weight of each piece of negative feedback, this could actually work. Votes from a "Good Player" should be worth a lot more than anything from the "Avoid Me" crowd.

Also, I'd pay real moneys for a Twitch channel showing all the Avoid Me VS. Avoid Me matches. What a terrible, terrible gongshow that will be... :P
