Microsoft will provide more TV-like advertisements through XBox Live

Console wise they are. The PS3 just has Vudu, Netflix and Amazon for the US. I believe European PSN has BBC.

It goes both ways. Some services, like YouTube and Pandora are accessible on PS3 via the web browser. It's still not too great but the latest update improved it a lot. Still, PSN users don't have to pay a yearly fee and see a bunch of adds just to have access to content that is already subscription-based and available through many other means. That's what makes this ridiculous. It would be the same thing as buying a paid app on the iPhone but still be subjected to banner ads. It's greedy on the part of Microsoft. It doesn't annoy me enough to cancel my XBL subscription but I probably won't renew next year.

why put ads on services that don't even have ads? espn3 is an ad-free service at this point in time, you'd think ESPN/Disney would tell MS to fuck off

Paying to watch commericals This is why I haven't had cable in years. God bless Netflix.

That's what you stupid fucks who pay for Xbox Live Gold get. Keep encouraging Microsoft and they are only going to shaft you further. It sickened me when I found out that I couldn't access Netflix, ESPN3, or Last.FM when you're basically using your own bandwidth and connecting to the service you want to use. This is even worse than charging people to play games using their own connections. I can't wait to see how they ream folks next generation. I should buy stock in vaseline.

You can use a ps3 youtube site to watch the vids in HD too. Plus you can download them.

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel......

Also, your gamertag shows recent use of xbox live gold service..... So does that make you a stupid fuck as well?

i'm gonna go play some Trials HD and then watch some Wire on HBO Go. Have fun.

How did pc gamers get to get all those services for free on games for windows live?

As for people loving paying to watch netflix etc, they will never change their minds. Someone actually said in another thread that since max payne 3 is 2 discs on 360 it must be the one to get because its loaded with more content.

lol

You can't argue that type of logic

I can watch hbo go on my ipad at no extra charge.

SO far every service has gone to every console for the most part. You'll be paying to watch hbo go and amazon video, everyone else wont.

Here are the hbo go devices so far
iPad, iPhone, Android devices, Roku, Samsung TV, Xbox 360.

Which ones charges you to access it and which ones don't?

It's funny to see people defend this. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the service and thinking it's worth the cost and all that, but how in anyway is more ads better for anyone? Even if it's "not that big of a deal", you should actually be saying "It's not that big of a deal, but it still sucks".

Someone do a cost breakdown per episode please. Paying for internet > paying for cable > paying for HBO > paying for netflix > paying for XBL gold, and then still have to watch commercials? Meanwhile Microsoft and affiliates are cashing in big time because you're okay with throwing your money out the window? I hope you watch a ton of shit on there....

Cancel the cable and the xbox live, hook up your computer to the TV and save your self ~$150 bucks a month easy.... or don't, it's your money... but damn, I shake my head.

Yeah, I'm not sure about that. Since I only use my Xbox to play Mass Effect 3 since I started the first game on Xbox. I've never paid for Gold and only used the two free month cards I got for returning my red ringed Xbox twice. Good job on the research I guess, but no stupid fuck here sir. I actually just canceled DirecTV and built an HTPC with WMC, Hulu Desktop, XBMC, and Netflix all for free. I can also access Netflix and Vudu for free on the PS3.

It makes no sense for MS to to put things like that behind the Gold pay wall but anything to give the illusion of value to the service I guess. I saw this coming when they "added" early access to demos as a benefit of Gold when it's basically a commercial for an upcoming game. It's cool that Microsoft are trying to make the console more of a central hub for entertainment but I already have an HTPC that does way more.

I wouldn't have a problem paying for Live if they had dedicated servers and threw in all the extra app shit as a bonus. Paying for P2P gaming using the internet connection I already have to pay for and the ability to use apps I can use elsewhere for free just strikes me as immensely retarded. But it's not my money and it's still a free country last time I checked so people can do what the hell they want. I'll just see what Sony decides next gen or I might take the plunge into PC gaming even though I suck with a mouse and keyboard.

This is what you want.

It works with your current wireless Xbox controllers as well as the wireless communicator. I use it myself for 95% of my PC gaming and have zero complaints.

^or you can buy nothing and use your dualshock with PC designed drivers
v-- sounds good to me. Choice is grand.

Glad i let my gold expire a week ago. Unfortunately since Transformers: Fall of Cybertron isn't on pc, i'll probably have to renew it before then. Hopefully Newegg will have one of their $30 12 month card sales before then.

I can watch it on my iPad and iPhone also but it's a lot more fun on my Kuro with full surround. I already pay for live for gaming thus having HBO Go as an added perk is great for me.

There are some cool things with xbl gold It is just so annoying that online play is hidden behind that pay wall, but then I guess you'd barely get anyone to pay for it. Pretty smart, but it could lead them to bad places if nintendo or sony up the ante next gen for free.

They should just charge for their party system (and dedicated servers) and stop charging for everything else. Its the only actual innovation they have over the competition.

They want people to jump into arcade and other family friendly games and yet they put multiplayer of all kinds behind a pay service, along with netflix and other apps. That's such a dumb policy on so many levels.

Much ado about nothing IMO. Technically these new ads might be obtrusive, but at this moment the XBL experience is pretty great, and isn't impeded by ads. What is there, a small ad in the bottom right corner of a tab? And maybe not even in every tab? The rest of the boxes on the UI are news pieces as far as I'm considered. Raam's Shadow came out... that's a news feed to me. No way in a million years would I look at an announcement that Raam's Shadow came out on the Home tab as annoying. Same with Fez. Or a new demo. Meh.

I'll wait for these new ads to come out; they'll probably be a nuisance, and that's unfortunate. But I really disagree that there's anything annoying about the current UI with regards to ads.

Ok, now get rid of the fee.

No kidding. I've always argued that even in a no-fee-online marketplace, the price of XBL still isn't exorbitant for the level of performace you get ... but between the awesome content PSN is putting in its Plus this month alone (free Trine 2, Awesomenauts, two Castlevanias and more) and the ads going up on XBL, Microsoft is really testing the limits of patience. Drop that fee, MS, you're not making any friends with that 2002 online pricing.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

XBL worse than PSN? What the hell are you smoking? Seriously, pass that shit over here, son. I need something that completely alters my perception of reality after the day I've had.

Service that does X > service that does X while shoving a bunch of ads down someone's throat

Service that does X > service that does X while shoving a bunch of ads down someone's throat

Ads aren't shoved down anyone's throats. They don't force you watch the ads, the ads can be completely bypassed by using the pop up menu.

Next.

And if you really think PSN is at all comparable to XBL, you're crazy. I'd much rather take a few ads over the nearly daily maintenance shite that PSN pulls.

Microsoft, how about you fix the total clusterfuck of your dash first. How about that? Right now it's easier to navigate the Japanese PSN store... and I can't read Japanese!

Man the responses just crack me up, the sarcasm oozes out of the pores, I simply love it!

I agree with the sentiment though, I hated NXE simply because of the bombardment of ads on a paid service, if I'm paying then I don't want ads, if silver became an ad ridden service to play online and gold became ad free with a few extra perks, I think that's completely fine... but that won't happen... and between ads and peer to peer I will probably never pay for XBL

On the one hand, sure, this rubs me the wrong way.

On the other hand, the world is filled with products you pay for that carry advertising (newspapers, movies, tv etc) so I see this as just one more to add to the list.

If I were Microsoft and I were releasing Halo 4 soon, I'd be leveraging the shit out of live fees to max my profits.

Edit: Just noticed Speedymanic's tag. :)

Glad my 50 bucks a year are put to good use. A shame their competitors haven't really stepped up their game to offer a similar experience for free.

Definitely not happy about this.........come on MS, this is bullshit. When next gen hits I'm probably switching teams, I can still access ESPN3 if I hook up my laptop to the TV, I just lose the convenience of having it through the live dash. Nothing lost there, now if Sony would get their act together this would be a much easier decision.

And if you really think PSN is at all comparable to XBL, you're crazy.
Exactly. PSN is fucking shite. If the other console manufacturers had stepped up and made decent online services, I wouldn't be paying for Xbox Live now. PSN is more expensive for the same content the majority of the time anyway.

You're being slightly disingenuous, but I understand your point. No cross game chat, no voice mail function, no party chat, no easy to find "recently played with" list... it can get frustrating.

However, the reality is that if you're looking to just playing your console games P2P, PSN works just fine. It was pretty disastrous in it's beginnings and the updates can be frustrating at times, however they never take me more than a few minutes and only occur every several weeks. Normally there's a larger gap than that.

I think Microsoft really needs to consider what they're doing here. They raised the price last year (I believe) and are now incorporating more adds into a paid service that's not exactly serving a different function than it's console and PC counterparts. I can't imagine that maintaining the servers with friends lists on them can actually cost BOTH six dollars a month and the ad revenue.

@surly - This statement "PSN is more expensive for the same content the majority of the time anyway" is factually incorrect. How can most content on PSN cost more than on XBL when XBL has a monthly price tag on it and most 3rd party developers price digital content the same on both consoles?

You're confusing OS features with network features. Vita can do cross chat and stuff.

I just feel the need to quote this.

Interestingly enough we're watching the slow implosion of cable tv as well.

No worries about that, my friend! Comcast NBC now have their brand new ultra platinum package!!!!!

Wanna see shows like 30 Rock or Parks and Recreation but refuse to pay for cable TV? Not a problem for Comcast subscribers willing to shell out 20 dollars a month, on top of your already FAIRLY PRICED cable internet bill, to access great sites like Netflix, who already pays fees to operate on the net, and Hulu, who we own! And they have fees too! It's great!

Also, part of the Platinum Package, a reduced data cap! That bandwidth gets expensive!

We here at Comcast, I mean Xfinity, know that money's tight, so we're doing everything we can to help you, or loyal customers, keep money in the bank. Luckily for you, there's no competition, so you're fucked!

@Meisadragon - Is that available on the PS3?

I don't even notice nor care about ads when I'm on the dash. What I'm missing is a clear dash since the clusterfuck update for Kinect I can't find anything in less than 5 minutes ....
I don't mind paying 2 bucks per month to play Live , only thing that is seriously missing is a clan/guild tab on the dash !
