Microsoft Windows 10 Event live stream starts in 30 minutes.

Oh man they really not going to let go of their 3 month success huh. I guess you can't blame them after all this time.

Beam is actually really good -- you can legit have conversations with people without worrying about the responses taking 15 seconds to go back and forth.

Thank God for Dolby Atmos support finally.

Who personally OWNS a home ATMOS setup? Isn't it like 22 speakers? Let me know and I'll crash their place for the superbowl.

EDIT: OS level friends/sharing is genuinely pretty neat. It's a wonder no one's done it yet.

...And you don't want them to even try to push their own product...?

Wow.

Why not have MS advertise the PS4Pro also....?

Dude, its Twitch. TWITCH!

I understand you can be a fan of MS all you want, but part of the reason all of game streaming/esports got as big as it did is because of the Twitch platform. Its not only not gonna go anywhere, asking the audience to even consider it is asinine.

The only thing this will do is cause MS to start securing broadcasting deals from events for Beam exclusively, which is going to be a dark, shitty day for all of live-streaming when they finally pull this off.

I'm not familiar with Beam but Twitch is soooo slow, is it any better Beam?

Beam is pretty awesome. There is an option for sub second delay on some streams and the interaction stuff is really interesting.

I was kinda being sarcastic lol it hasn't been a big deal to me, it's just nice they're finally adding it

Monopolies are bad, OK? And it's not as if Twitch is a totally perfect service...

There's a Twitch beta option that significantly reduces lag between video and chat. Wonder how much it solves the delay.

Dolby Atmos is 9.1.2...its not the same as the theater version

But normal Bitstream Out is there. This is just them adding Dolby Atmos now.

It's more than that... the bitstream audio was ALWAYS processed by the Xbox and re-encoded, there was no passthrough in raw format (or passthrough with system audio laid on top without a remix). This meant that your source Atmos (or whatever) stream would always be re-encoded. Now it'll just be passed through, which enables Atmos (and I assume DTS:X).

I may have the terms wrong, as I'm not a sound engineer.

They are trying to carve out a space for their own endeavours. This has nothing to do with being a fan of MS. Competition breeds innovation.

So say they get an exclusive major streaming tournament on Beam. What is so dark about having to go to beam's website and watching it there? What do you lose by watching an esports tourney on beam vs twitch? If the quality is good and they get the viewers because people want to see the tournament, how exactly is that "dark".

You are correct...xbox one always reencoded...its bitstream was just passing through one type which was the reconfigured audio

Now it will actually truly passthru

Me. I have a 7.1.4 system (7 surround, 1 sub, 4 ceiling) hooked up in a home theatre with a 3m screen. Gears of War 4 is pretty awesome on it.

Atmos is a flexible spec supporting almost any number of speakers in any configuration, but for home, 7 surround, 1-2 sub and 2 or 4 ceiling speakers are the standards that are supported by most AVRs.

Apple pushed this a bunch of times and backed it out each time (iOS/watchOS). The truth is people do not actually need quick access to their contacts on an OS level.

The one cool thing about it, is that it will make new streamers get big easier than on Twitch.

New games & new streaming ideas have always helped new streamers get big on twitch. Having Streamers do shout outs to other streamers and having them raid other streams cause theirs is ending has always helped too. I'm not saying Twitch is perfect, but what you're talking about here also never applied to either Ustream or Hitbox - people didn't just get big on other platforms because no one else was on it. You need watchers & streamers.

Monopolies are bad, OK? And it's not as if Twitch is a totally perfect service...

Are you defending MS when you claim monopolies are bad? There are other Twitch competitors out there, have been for years. I'm not saying people shouldn't compete with Twitch, i'm saying to do so this late in the game is absolutely stupid. And knowing MS and their anti-competitive ways, they will start throwing money around to secure exclusive broadcasting rights for Beam, something Google hasn't done with YT gaming.

So say they get an exclusive major streaming tournament on Beam. What is so dark about having to go to beam's website and watching it there? What do you lose by watching an esports tourney on beam vs twitch? If the quality is good and they get the viewers because people want to see the tournament, how exactly is that "dark".

Less options for the user isn't a good thing. Let the streamer stream on whichever services they want to, let them reach as many of their audiences members on as many platforms as they wish.

Beam is great and the fact that I'm rooting for Microsoft of all entities to try to take on the Twitch monopoly should say something.

Twitch is not a monopoly - there are other game streaming sites. Just because they are not as popular doesn't make twitch automatically a monopoly.

Oh, I see. Thanks for clarification.

Today on GAF: competition is bad. If you happen to provide a product that competes with something already successful, please stop.

I want to live in a world where the only streaming service available is Netflix, that's what we all want - right?
