Microsoft: Xbone vs PS4 spec difference is fairly marginal

"We're optimistic about this generation as well. We've got a unique value proposition, and from just a pure specs perspective it's always gonna be fairly marginal difference," Bowman said. "The purists are gonna argue the toss, but I think it comes down to the games. You're gonna see great exclusive games on Xbox One, and when you look at the cross-platform games, and there's gonna be exclusive content on Xbox One."

Sony has time and again referred to the PS4 as the "most powerful video game console ever created." Check out a graphic here comparing the specifications for the Xbox One and PS4 to decide for yourself.

Also in the interview, Bowman addressed the Xbox One's worldwide availability. Microsoft's system is currently sold in 13 markets, while the PS4 is now available in more than 50 countries around the globe.

"We’d like to be in more markets--this is a global business--but it’s also a long-term business, and we’ll progressively launch in more markets over the coming year," he said.

Finally, Bowman and Xbox New Zealand lead Steven Blackburn spoke to how Microsoft expects the demographic for the Xbox One to change over time. Right now, Blackburn said the Xbox One is "absolutely as male and core-skewed as you can imagine," but he anticipates that this will change.

"We need to have the ability to be that broad church," he said.

Part of the way in which Microsoft hopes to add more players to the mix, Blackburn said, is by making the Xbox One experience easier and more intuitive. "Gamers are willing to spend time configuring things, but someone who just wants to watch TV is not," he said.

Bowman added: "We can't let the tech be a barrier."

Before a witty first comment

Right MS.... Whatever you say

Great games are a given for all three platforms at the moment.... some exciting games on XO have been announced.

Exclusive Content is one of the many plagues of the industry... Yet even with that brag you only have a few of those compared to your main competition.

But importantly MS, please the power gap is anything but fairly marginal.

What would you expect from a Microsoft PR person? To denounce their own console? Speak ill of it in front of a major press outlet? Their job, whether they believe the information or not, is to take the best angle to sell consoles.

Why is this spin a surprise?

While it may not be true on paper, in practice the difference is marginal. Nobody is going to care about 900p vs 1080p, or slightly lower AA. The games are the exact same otherwise.

Price OTOH does matter. A lot. And the difference there is far greater than marginal. MS needs to get rid of the damn kinect if they want any chance of holding on to the US market. Once ps4 supply issues are sorted out, things are going to get ugly for the xbone really fast.

Seriously who is this guy? Did he just wake up? We already had the resolution scandal. I thought we were passed this.

Sooo why couldn't they launch in more countries? I heard something about Kinect voice commands not being ready...is that true? I mean, they've been working on Kinect for years so that can't be the reason for the 18>13 launch delay and TBA for all other countries?

Ugg.

And no, it doesn't sound any better when I hear this stuff from Sony either, or anyone else.

Oh god, here we go.

In reference to this guy, he's just the boss of Aus Xbox. Just being a PR pony I suppose. He won't have a real technical understanding.

There's pros and cons to each guys, with Sony having more pros, of course.

Why do I feel like this is going to be a talking point for a long time for MS? The idea of pulling the blanket of your head and still telling you that it's the same, and if not, very marginal?

I wanted to say something positive about the rest of the article, but he doesn't say anything else of any worth.

Then again, the difference can be classified as a margin. And is therefore "marginal".

Hmmm lots of things wrong that I see in this interview...

"The purists are gonna argue the toss, but I think it comes down to the games."

First, "the purists" are the ones that but consoles at the beginning of a generation, and especially at launch. Those are the people u can't fool, and who recommend which system to get to their friends and family.

"Gamers are willing to spend time configuring things, but someone who just wants to watch TV is not," he said.

Also, he's right that someone who just wants to watch TV doesn't want to mess with configurations. That's why they get a $100 Roku or Apple TV, or just stick w cable or satellite. Why would they buy an Xbone if all they want to do is watch TV???

Microsoft has a tenuous grasp on the term "marginal". Perhaps they've been pushing this narrative for so long that they can no longer discern fact and fiction?

Thread #12404 of company PR trying to talk good of their product.

Seriously, we dont need a 10,000 page discussion of why this isn't true. Its PR.

fixed. it fits.

I kind of agree, except the bit about purists arguing the toss.

To a layman, both the PS4 and the XBone obviously offer a large jump from the PS3 / 360 / Wii U. I can't see 'em sweating about 900p vs 1080p.

The purists aren't arguing the toss though. The purists are all aware that the PS4 is notably more powerful (on a purist scale).

Pretty sure MS will stick 17 titans in the Xbox Two, I'm sure they must hate having to deal with the spec questions by now

At some point I just wish journalists would stop asking this question. It's not enough that there's a gap, but people want to hear the concession speech that they're never going to get from Microsoft.

Well that doesn't explain the resolution gap between third party PS4/Xbox titles.
Sure, the games look good on Xbox One, but I wouldn't call the performance gap "marginal" at this state.

With Xbox One I would be set with my 720p TV. For PS4 I need to upgrade to 1080p, so it's more expensive.

Therefore there is higher value proposition in the Xbox One due to the marginal spec difference.

Ya, like sharpness filters and upscalers.

If they were smart, they'd never bring it up. The spec game is lost, pick something else that you can trump the competition on.

Having PR mouthpieces like this spout nonsense is only going to put the spotlight on them more.
