Might & Magic X: Legacy gameplay video / early access today

Any idea if M&M 1-9 will be made available on Steam?

Ubi will fill the gaps in its GOG offerings, if anything; unlike Squeenix, Ubi doesn't bring its GOG stuff over to Steam after the exclusivity period has expired.

I ordered the box.

Cannot resist a good looking box and cloth map for 30€, especially considering that the game seems well received and I get all the digital stuff on top of it.

CHRIST

jumping in now. MIGHT & MAGIC

where did you order the box? from ubi? only seeing digital only buying options from my regular shops

How's Uplay? Not sure if I want that in my system.

it works fine. like steam or origin.

Same. I don't even see it on Uplay, which is where it's supposed to be available.

oh wait. ok. yeah, I've got a dvd version option on uplay. it's a weird limited selection of countries on the drop down menu for me (norwegian uplay). andorra, australia, austria, belgium, denmark, finland, france, italy, monaco, netherlands, new zealand, norway, poland, romania, spain, sweden, switzerland, uk.

uplay seems superlagged now. hehe.

Yeah, I ordered it from Ubi. Paid with paypal, free shipping even. (To Austria)

The page did refuse to load once during the transaction though, but a refresh fixed that.

I bought this, but only had a chance to play about 30 minutes last night, and most of that time was in the character generation screens.

When I started exploring the first town, I had performance issues. It seemed like I a would press a key, and there would be a significant pause before the game responded. This is annoying, especially in the grid-based game (press forward, wait, screen moves, press forward, wait, screen moves). My PC is not cutting edge, but has no issues with Grimrock, New Vegas, and most other games.

When I get home tonight I will tinker with the graphics settings to try to get the game to run better. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

Game's great so far. Really liking it, it's really tactical. Really reminds me of the time when RPGs weren't as streamlines as they are these days (though, of course, it likely will get a bit more streamlines soon :/ )

Ah, new generation gamers who still think that only twitch is "skill". Rather sad.

I've been playing games for about 20 years or so.

Sure, there are more aspects of gaming than twitch reflexes. I meant player skill (Timing, reflexes, knowledge of the games mechanics.), as opposed to knowledge and patience (strategic aspects.).

Yeah, I did that yesterday as well. I played the game around 1 hour - LOVING IT - and I am seriously thinking about stopping now and just waiting for the full version.

Bought via UPlay cause Steam was wonky for me.

EDIT: this is my first and probably only UPlay purchase ever (until M&M11 drops). The software itself seems ok, non-violent (lol). Open UPlay, start the game, play, close, forget about [UPlay]. I don't really understand the big negative deal about it? I am treating it as an integral part of the game and not another "Steam-like" platform. When I finish the game I will uninstall the game as well as UPlay (the "wrapper").

Yesterday during the day the store was FUCKED. It did not work at all for me for a couple of hours.

It's... okay. Feature-wise it's like a desert next to Steam but I am using it like a fancy launcher - like those Mass Effect or Skyrim ones. Disabled autostart, enabled autologging - and I can start the game (M&MX) in 20-30 seconds.

And it works Offline! No need to be connected at all.

If it wasn't a character portrait fighter I would buy it as I love turned based RPG's.

For shame ;), there's some great rpgs "character portrait fighter" style. Might & Magic 6, 7, & 8 are fantastic, IMO. 3 is very good as well. I never played too much of 4/5 but heard they were great.

Plus there's other great ones like Arcana on SNES. As well as Eye of the Beholder and all those types.

Going to buy it as I really want a new Might & Magic. To be honest Dark Messiah was a gigantic let down. From what they promised initially that sounded more like a hub based rpg like VtM: Bloodlines, to a more linear Meh experience. I still refuse to buy Arkane products due to that. Rubbed me the wrong way. I did like Arx Fatalis but Dark Messiah was a let down as a Might & Magic game. It literally had nothing to do with M&M at all.

Lol, of course the Steam store is having problems atm. Oh well more SR4.

I experienced the same thing. Turning down the shadow quality to low had the largest affect on my performance. It's clear there's still a fair bit of optimisation to go! Hope that helps.

The game is brilliant so far even in its alpha state. I've learned to save often though as I've had a couple of instances where the enemy never takes their turn and it effectively freezes up the game. I'm hoping they allow notes or labels to be added to the mini-map at some stage too as it took me a while to figure out which stores sold what items I required. <--- according to the readme this is going to be fixed

Edit: You can fix the stuck turns by restarting the turn with CTRL + ALT + R

Should I pick this up now or wait for the full release?

I'd wait to be honest. The game is very 'alpha' at the moment. I've experienced a broken quest, interface issues (actions buttons being removed), the day/night cycle is much too fast etc. It's still ridiculously fun but I'm going to stop playing and wait for the final release. I've put in about five hours so far and I don't want to lose any progress between now and the final release.

I had a trawl through the source files and they're using Unity as the middleware. That will make an iOS version a sure thing later on down the track

I really dislike turn based games. It just completely eliminates the fun, and makes it feel more like a mathematical equation. It removes the element of player "skill" from the equation, and makes it feel like it could easily be reduced down to a series of yes/no answers. While that could also be said of non turn based games, or any game, it's not as glaringly obvious as it is in turn based games.

Yep. And the worst games are chess and go, where there's absolutely no need for player skill. Pure turn based boredom.

Realtime immerses you, while turn based constantly reminds you of its binary nature.

And exploration is not fun at all, or even a real element, in most turn based games, since player movement is usually limited to some degree (Amount of moves per round, fewer moves if mobs are nearby, etc.).

Obviously. So games like Civilisation, Alpha Centauri and Master of Magic had no "fun" or "real" exploration.

Seriously. What the flying fuck are you talking about? This is beyond ignorance - it is obviously willful, considering how obvious and old my counterexamples are.

I get it you don't like turn based games, but you should leave this level of rationalisation of personal preferences to politics. It is intellectually dishonest, to say the least, when you try to explain what is obviously nothing more than personal taste in absolutes, as if it was true for everyone. All you should have written was "I don't like turn based games because they don't immerse me." Obviously it's better to present your own subjectivity as absolute knowledge, so that it looks as if you were actually contributing something substantive - but this is a video game forum, you can freely say "I don't like X or Y", there's nothing wrong with that.

I just played the early access version for a bit. It's really rough technically, but I like the art and lore. Most importantly, the gameplay looks really faithful and fun.

i really like this, the quests seem pretty interesting and it doesnt feel dumbed down at all. I can imagine that like shadowrun it will be really cool for the user generated content that gets made

I like the game a lot. It's faithful in a lot of aspects. Such as the shops with the animated scenes like 6/7/8. The trainers/teachers for expert/master/etc. levels in various houses around town.

I really hope maybe in the next one, if this one does well enough, that we at least get a paperdoll with wearable armor like 6/7/8. Or even a 3d model. I'm just a loot fiend in M&M games and loved seeing my party wear all that cool gear. And of course free movement would be awesome, but I can live with the tile based system they have for now, it's still great. After all, Isles of Terra is what got me into M&M.

Game is really, really good even in this alpha state. It is very faithful to the earlier M&M games, I love it.

Also it seems to be selling pretty well on Steam:

And consider that some folks like me bought it on UPlay because it was unclear if the Steam version was the Deluxe Boxed one.

Looking good. I bought the Steam version a couple of days ago but haven't played it just yet.

Edit: Oh, nice, Ubi added Might & Magic VI to the sub!

Edit edit: I should note that the last time Ubi did this -- pre-purchasing Rayman Origins netted you a Steam copy of Rayman 2 -- the bonus game never appeared on its own, so if you're at all interested, I'd purchase M&MX during the Early Access period just to be safe.

I looked at the game title, knew I played it when it first came out and loved it. The brain refused to give details until I loaded it and then WOW!

Nothing quite like not playing a game for so long you forgot everything except knowing you loved it. Then you boot it again and you instantly remember where everything is and why you loved it.

I had to look the game up, but I knew I'd played an earlier entry with V in the title and instantly recognised the cover. I played it a ton back in the day, so an appearance on Steam is a very pleasant surprise!

Mmmm, reading this thread, I'm very much tempted by this. But I haven't played any M&M title before. And I'm a stickler for playing series in order. And I own all the previous games on GoG.

So basically, maybe see y'all in a thousand hours or so. But I'll buy it sooner than that to show support.

Well, if you are talking about narrative chronological order, then the story begins with M&M: Clash of Heroes, continues with HoMM V and Heroes VI and then it's finally on M&M X.

It won't do you much good playing M&M 1-9 (and HoMM 1-4) unless you want to catch an odd easter-egg or two.

Unless Sheltem makes his triumphant return.

Dun dun dunnnnnnn.

Yeah, X is part of the reboot universe, not the original timeline.

Anyone else having trouble playing M&M6 on Steam?

It says M&M6 is having trouble loading files, please re-install.

Did that and nothing. Verified cache, nothing.

Unlike GOG, steam doesn't do anything to make old games work on new machines. You'll want to install the community patch.

Thanks. =)

Figured Ubisoft might actually do this since they own it, lol...

Gog is good like that I guess =P. I almost bought that all in one pack when it was on sale. Guess I should have.

Edit: Got it working. =) Did have to put it on compatibility mode as well though.

I assume the Steam version of M&MVI is the very same as the GOG version as I copied the game to my rather crummy Win7 x64 laptop to see if it's DRM-free (it is) and it booted up just fine. I had quite the nostalgiagasm when the intro began playing, haha.

I love the intro voiceover before you create your party, gives me goosebumps still to this day. I miss those kinds of old sounding narrators similar to Tony Jay.

Skip M&M1 and 2 (they are pretty ancient and hardcore) and start with Isles of Terra (M&M3). IoT is where the real M&M begins!

Any clue how long the Early Access period is going to last? I am definitely going to grab it but I would like to wait a few weeks before I do.

The game isn't releasing until 2014 so presumably early access will be available for most (all is more likely) of that time.

Been a long-time fan of Might & Magic. Never actually beat any of 'em, but I loved 4, 5, and 6. 7 was OK. Don't think I played 8, definitely skipped 9.

This looks and plays brilliantly. I ran into the glitch where your combat icons disappear randomly, but I rolled with it as a legit condition and that made the opening dungeon probably more intense than it should've been. Now I know how to fix it (wouldn't have expected combat icons to be in the spellbook).

And I got M&M6. That epic intro. It was cheesy even back in its day, but it's fascinating to me how that kind of cutscene can be done in real-time today, but took hours and hours of rendering back in the day.

Anyway. Prerelease for awesome next-gen dungeon crawler, free copy of classic dungeon crawler, $30. No-brainer.

For some laughs go over to the internal ubi forums where everyone's butthurt over the bugs. THAT'S WHAT ALPHA MEANS.

Am I the only one who thinks the game looks ...well terrible?

It's the textures; they are extremely low-res and they don't seem to mesh all that well into each other. It definitely does not look close to how it does in the Steam screenshots.

So far my other complaints are the lack of comparison stats when checking weapons/shopping, the performance (which is really poor at the moment--especially during the day), and the repeated house interiors: like, why am I looking at the same guy and girl in every house in town even when there is only a guy to talk to?

Also, its a bit light on the dialogue, imo. The way the delivery of it is framed is very 'stiff'; you just ask these broad, random questions about the world and backstory. There's no voice-acting, so why can't they go a bit more in depth and give us something more back-and-forth/dynamic. The NPC's might as well be cardboard cut-outs at the moment.

However, most of my complaints are what I expect from an early access game with 5+ months until launch.(though I don't think 16:10 resolution widescreen is all that much to ask for, even for an early beta), so its no big deal for now, and the core gameplay (at least 2.5 hours in) seems really solid. The combat system is a huge improvement over Legend of Grimrock's real-time, dial-a-spell-but-guess-the-number system, as is the variation of the environments. For what its worth, I also quite like the world of reboot M&M (it could be because I'm one of the few who seemingly enjoyed Heroes 6). I had written the game off after reading some extremely unfavorable impressions a few months back, but after playing, I'm pretty confident that we are going to end up with a fine rpg.

Chess Grandmasters have no skill. Good to know!
