"Mighty No.9" First in-engine footage (rough/placeholder, 7 days of development)

well it currently looks like cookie-cutter UE3 and it also means it's going to be running at 30fps on most platforms.

7 days in looking like cookie-cutter UE3 is no big deal. The 30fps thing is a more legit concern, but what Unity-powered games run at 60fps on 360/PS3 and look like what this game aims to look like?

I'm not really sure what the point of this update is, though. It looks impressive for 7 days of work, no doubt, but showing a video and saying that the final game will look nothing like it, then.. I don't see why you show it to begin with.

It generally does seem like a bad idea to show early rough footage like this.

I feel like the biggest crowd-funded projects should only show off something that is a good approximation of the final product. If they don't have it, they should either wait until they do (like Star Citizen) or don't show anything. Most people just don't understand prototypes.

I think it looks fine. I'm also not seeing how 3DS would struggle with something like this, I think nerfing the backgrounds would do the job?

To show that you're team is actually competent and knows what they're doing. To encourage thoughts like 'man if they can shit out this in 7 days just think of what a year will do!'

Will that/does that actually work? I don't know, probably not. But I feel that's what they're trying for when they do that.

What's impressive about this? 7 days to make something that looks exactly like Mega Man. How many games have there been in the series? I'm not saying the finished product will be bad, but it seems kind of pointless for the devs to post a video like this. I dont think anyone is doubting Inafune's ability to create another Mega Man.

It looks...well, how it looks. It's test footage. Undoubtedly the final game won't resemble this and hopefully it's more than a Mega Man clone. :P

I hope they budgeted the 3DS and Vita stuff properly because those two will need the game to be redone from the ground up, especially the 3DS version. Heck, I wonder if Vita will even be around in 2015. Actually, I don't really have to wonder. :P

Did you back this game? I don't see why anyone would complain about a developer giving visual confirmation that their crowdfunded game is being worked on and that they're doing their best to meet expectations set by concept art and target renders.

This will be an interesting pseudo experiment on gamers' knowledge of game development....

Seven days for this? Considering it's just 2D, it should be done by now!

These kind of super early looks into the process are great for backers but once they're in the public eye it can easily get twisted into something it isn't meant to be, despite disclaimers. I'd almost rather they hold off and document a lot of these milestones for later on because of that, as interesting as it is to see as its happening.

Isn't this supposed to be a Mega Man game in everything but name? I thought Mega Man wanted a new game! Make up your minds =p.
8-4 has talked quite a bit on the Kickstarter podcast about the balance the team is looking to strike between classic Mega Man and new gameplay ideas. They seem to have a pretty good handle on what's important to keep (structure, tight gameplay) and where they can innovate. It won't be a straight up clone.

Because that isn't a small feat in of itself. Making something look and play like a Mega Man game is hard. It already looks more like a proper Mega Man game than Mega Man X7 did. Even Mega Man X8 was a bit more clunky than that. The series hasn't had a good track-record when it comes to games with 3D graphics.

It is all placeholder assets, but the basic physics and speed all look pretty good. It already looks about as good as Mega Man Powered Up visually, as well, even with placeholders.

Basically, this video is proof that they can pull off the Mega Man style gameplay in the Unreal Engine.

I can't believe Capcom aren't shutting it down now.

What ground could they stand on? Nobody owns the concept of 2D platformers or games with robots in them. Just like how DC can't sue anyone that makes a comic about crime fighting aliens or rich people that fight crime.

Inafune is doing it right, unlike those fan projects that moronically use real IP and then act shocked when a cease and desist hits them. He's made something that is clearly and obviously a spiritual successor to Megaman but is different enough to not infringe on copyrights.

This is godlike. When I was a kid, this is what I imagined the future of sprite games would look like: a playable cartoon. Kinda funny that all of the hand-drawn stuff fails miserably at it despite being created in a way that should make it look that way by default but the ones with 3D models are killing it.

Too much lazy anime tactics like only animating certain parts, practically never animating at the same frame rate that the game runs in, and a complete refusal to animate alternate camera angles kills it.

It's a KS game and it is devs' responsibility to keep updating info for its backers. It has been only 7 days in development and they already have something to show and it looks very promising.

If this (or, in fact, better than this) is what they are going for, the 3DS version could be the most expensive stretch goal in terms of development time. It would probably need entirely separate assets.

UE3? Vita version is going to be 20fps and run at subnative res. 3DS version is probably going to be at Power Point speeds.

It's just a placeholder stuff. Often when you have staff that can mock something up in this manner and amount of time it will look rough. It is intended to be a road map, and it's a part of the game development process. Come on guys, we should know better to judge this. We're lucky to even see this. Non-backers especially.
