Mike Patcher: "The Exclusives for 360 Look a Little Better"

BenjaminBirdie said:
I don't know, if it's played right, the game could be a serious mainstay. Every week, a new song is advertised on MTV as a new download, spots or stuff on mtv.com featuring people's videos of them playing, some wild convergent media shit like that and it could blow up massive. It has way too much muscle behind it between MTV and EA to not fulfill its intentions, and it's clear that it's intent is to be nothing less than a cultural phenomenon. Why else would it have the backing of MTV?

I kind of think you're underestimating it. And I don't mean just some random commercial. The game is going to be demoed and shown out the wazoo and what console the game is shown on is pretty significant. I think quite a few people are going to be walking into Best Buy this Chanukah, not looking for a particular console, but looking to play Rock Band and if one console can get attatched to the game quicker than the other it could pay some significant dividends.

I don't know, I think Rock Band is going to be a lot more massive than some people think, and as the Wii has shown, appealing to a casual market is how you really cement your console's place in the marketplace. That said, if the 360 can pull off a price drop before Rock Band? Then yeah, they could have that game officially locked up, even if Noodle and 2D both have PS3s strapped to their backs at the VMAs.

I'm not saying it can't outsell GH3, just that it's not an eventuality. I think RB2 has a better chance of outselling GH4, especially when you take GH3 on PS2 and Wii into account.

RB was shown on 360 in that GameSpot vid a few weeks ago, I don't know what makes you think PS3 will crib the mindshare for the game. It's multiplatform, no one will have any question about that. And the 700,000 GH2 360 guitars floating out there give it a pretty good starting base.

I await a SONY BMG MUSIC sponsored SingStar contest for a recording contract. Since there are built in voting/popularity controls in SS, it would be easy to accomplish.

That alone could drive sales to new people.

That is true. They also are a bit better suited to coordinate DLC at this point. I really just hope they fulfill the potential of all that type of convergence. I'd really love to see some Pumpkins video debut on MTV and then a little thing comes up, "Download and play it yourself RIGHT NOW".

I'm sorry, what were talking about again? Rock band is going to be so awesome...

Odd that he would ingore Nintendo. Every child and teenager who owns a Wii (and there's a shitload of them) is going to want Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros. I think it's very likely that Nintendo hardware and software is going to generate the most revenue this holiday season.

And if he's talking about better game quality, well that's opinion.

Unless Sony strikes a deal with EA then the 360 is obviously going to be the console associated with Rock Band on virtue of sales alone. Hell, the colors even match... sort of.

Holy crap. First time I saw that. Where'd you find that? Ghaleon?
Two thoughts.

First, it's hostesd by the WSJ online site. Unlikely they did a 'shop job for their article and more likely they are using official media.

Second, it's a slightly different pose than we've seen from any of the official shots. Looks like the real deal.

Holy shit.

He's talking about game sales which is negligable to anything in this "war" because Gears of War was the best selling game last Christmas...

"This is a critical holiday," says Peter Moore, the Microsoft corporate vice president who runs its Xbox business. "It's the first time all three consoles will be in stock at retail, with no supply issues."

Jack Tretton, president and chief executive of Sony's U.S. videogames division, says: "Last holiday was a dress rehearsal."

Huh. No supply issues, whatsoever, for all three consoles, Peter Moore? You sound awfully sure of yourself, but then, this is a fluff piece.

I'm not sure the Xbox 360's heavyweights other than probably Lost Odysee have what it takes to sell Hardware units the Big games will probably sell like Gears did last year and do crap all to how many hardware units are sold.

We don't have the full context for the quote, but it sounds like he's saying the 360 exclusives look better from the perspective of what games will drive hardware sales. Citing Halo 3 there seems appropriate.
Yeah that's what I was thinking as well. Unless Killzone looks like God himself crafted it (aka it matches the target render), Halo 3 should go unchallenged as biggest franchise title with GTA coming in close behind it.

I don't think this is so certain when it comes to the Wii. I don't think it's completely out of the question that the shortages can run through the holidays and into next year.

But that doesn't fit in with Pachter's worldview. In Pachter's world, casuals will drop the Wii in a couple of months, HD will cause the PS3/360 to drive forward in sales for massive damage, and Wii2 with HD and Blu-Ray will come out in 2009.

I just don't get why people tend to lose faith in the man with predictions like that.

I think this holiday really comes down to this for NPD top spots:

GTA4
Halo3

vs

Smash Bros.
Mario Galaxy

vs

Sony IPs
Ratchet and Clank

Is GTA4 Like eclusible teh da 360 orr WhAt!?!?!?

There's also more than Ratchet................

Edit: OOOOOOoooooh NPD......

Well if we look simply at the amount of exclusives and forget which ones are best , the 360 has more of them this year and this holiday season .

Which set of exclusives will be best is anyones guess , but there are more on the 360 and thus more games to drive sales

I was on the fence about it, but P does this professionally and probably makes more than most GAFfers that speculate on the matter, so I'm going to have to go with the expert.

I don't even get what this means. He makes more money than us and that somehow makes a difference? Is that what is trying to be said here?

I don't think he is ignoring them . . . it just isn't interesting from a stock perspective. Nintendo won big time and we all know it.

From a financial perspective it is more interesting to see what is happening with ATVI, THQI, TTWO, and ERTS.

There was actually an brief about Nintendo stock as well. Seriously, I was reading the WSJ on the train as always and thinking "wtf, is this GAF?"

I guess it went up online last night, so the full article is only available to subscribers now, but here are some brief quotes:

Shares of Nintendo Co. have more than doubled in value over the past year thanks to its wildly popular Wii videogame console and DS portable-game device. And analysts expect the price to increase for a while longer.

....

Wii, which is played with a remote control-shaped controller that is intuitively swung like a bat or a tennis racket, is outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 console by 4 to 1 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 console by 2 to 1 in the U.S., the world's largest videogame market, according to NPD Group Inc.

In Japan, Wii sales have been even stronger, outselling the PS3 6 to 1 last month and the XBox 360 by even more, according to the latest survey by market-research firm Enterbrain Inc. released yesterday. The PS3 debuted last November and the Xbox 360 was launched in November 2005

...

Atul Goyal, an analyst with CLSA, is one of the most bullish industry analysts. He has a 12-month price target of 80,000 yen on Nintendo. CLSA doesn't have an investment-banking relationship with Nintendo.

"With a business model that is tantamount to a money avalanche, Nintendo always looks cheap," Mr. Goyal said in a recent research note. He compared Nintendo with Apple Inc.'s spectacular rise after launching its iPod music player.

For once I agree with Pachter.

Halo 3 is a gynormous force that will take the gaming world by storm.

GTA IV is coming to both platforms but exclusive downloadable content has been announced for 360.

Madden 08 will run at 60fps on 360 and 30fps on PS3.

Those are the big three games, they're on 360, and two of them, though multiplatform, have advantages over the PS3 versions, giving them exclusive attributes as well.

Sony needs to get busy on software, announce some surprises at E3, and drop that hardware price if they want to even keep pace with 360 this holiday.

I don't know the Mans got a point. The 360 lineup is clearly going to be the dominant lineup in 2007.

GTA with exclusive content
Halo 3
Mass Effect
Eternal Sonata
BioShock
Ace Combat 6
Splinter Cell Conviction

and I'm sure I missed some. That is a impressive lineup.

It's not exactly Worthington's Law here, but when it comes to determining which console has the best exclusives (and it's a hard choice, no question), who am I going to trust?

Someone who gets paid to make that decision (and who most of GAF would give their right eyes to become) and who is completely unbias or some forum armchair quarterback who probably has an agenda because he can't even afford all of the systems (unlike P, who probably gets them all for free though I'm sure he could afford them too).

That choice is pretty clear.

I agree with him for now.

Lair, Heavenly Sword and KZ3 could all end up being killer aps but I don't have blind faith in the dev teams based on their track record.

For me Irrational, Bioware, Bungie, etc. are all sure bets. Having said that so are Naughty Dog and Imsoniac so I'm sure Uncharted and R&C will be great.

It's close, that's for sure.

/Glad I own both a 360 and PS3. :D

Wait.

Halo 3 (exclusive to one platform) will outsell GTAIV (multiplatform)?

Really?

:lol :lol :lol

Deserves the Full Quote Treatment:

"Yeah, that's right. So what do you think? Wrong! Whatever you were gonna say doesn't matter because I make more money than you. That's if you're 80% of the public. So, I'm right. Each year, Value Magazine ranks the 500 best people in the history of the world. Did you know that, according to Worthington's Law, the opera singer who called himself, [makes air apostrophes] "The Great Caruso" was nowhere near as great as Sammy Hagar, The Red Rocker? So shut up, Caruso! Hey! Who's greater than Saint Francis of Assisi? How about, uh, Darryl Strawberry? See ya later, Saint Frannie, ya schmuck. Hey, guess who's better than Van Gogh. Let's see, after adjusting for inflation...[uses calculator] almost everybody! He made nothing!"

"So that means that I'm better than Van Gogh and Galileo put together!"

"And I'm better than you, brainiac. In 1995, Steve Peaters had no money. He was a public school teacher, so his opinion wasn't worth very much. But then, in 1996, he won the lottery, and he was a great man. Greater than Einstein, who made very little. But then, guess what this genius-for-a-day does. He goes and gives his money to charity. Now he's about as dumb as Einstein. Way to go, Einstein. So, read Value Magazine, and get to know the 500 best people in the world."

Did Peter Moore really say:
"This is a critical holiday," says Peter Moore, the Microsoft corporate vice president who runs its Xbox business. "It's the first time all three consoles will be in stock at retail, with no supply issues."

????

There's no way the Wii will be in stock this holiday. They can't even produce enough units to have stock on the shelf during Summer.

How could I forget this analyst quote from the Nintendo article?

WSJ said:
On top of Wii sales, demand for DS games has continued. Nintendo is on pace to sell 22 million units by the end of its business year next March. KBC's Mr. Kamide expects Nintendo's April-June operating profit to have risen by nearly 60%, to 45.8 billion yen from 28.8 billion yen a year earlier. He expects sales to jump 52% to 199.2 billion yen. Nintendo is expected to report its quarterly earnings later this month.

"They're going to be minting [money]," he says.

Whatever guys, PS3, Xbox360, who cares?!

I'm going for the definitive version of Assassin's Creed! :
From the article said:
ACTION
• Assassin's Creed (Ubisoft)
PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and PC

There are rumors that Nintendo has been holding back stock so that they have enough surplus this fall when they drop the price.

:lol :lol :lol

I'm going to pretend you're being serious and not just trying to pull a sarcastic joke.

Why would Nintendo drop the price of the Wii when they can't meet demand, yet, with what they're putting out now?

Reggie: I know we could sell these systems now for $250, but let's wait and sell them for $200 later in the year.
Lackey: Why are we dropping the price later in the year, sir?
Reggie: Because we follow an aritificial timeline for when we drop system prices that has nothing to do with reality, son!

Nintendo said they'll ship 14 million units this year, and from the sales of the first half, this will be heavily loaded towards the last half. They'll probably be shipping triple the units in Oct-Dec than we've been seeing lately.

And no, there is no reason for them to plan on cutting price this year. Right now nobody knows where the ceiling is at $249.

Right... they're obviously slacking with Rachet, Uncharted, HS, KZ, Warhawk, Socom, and Lair... (possibly GT:P)

Some more surprises at E3 would go a long way for them... and, I wouldn't expect a price drop, as I honestly don't think they really care what happens this holiday season as they seem to be content in their articles with the overall sales of the Playstation line (PS3, PSP, PS2), and they're getting the edge in establishing Blu-Ray...

Really?

i wouldn't go that far (after all according the the article GTA sold 8+ million while halo 2 sold 5.5+ million).

but surely gta will sell at least 3x or 4x more on 360 this holiday. the 360 installed base is already 3x that of ps3 in the us. and gta is no longer going to move ps3 systems (certainly not like it did ps2 because it was exclusive then).

The 360 exclusives (well console exclusives) this year do look better. What's all the fuss about? I think the PS3 will have a better exclusive game list for the year of 2008 though. Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, PGR4, Naruto, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Ace Combat 6, etc. all coming out for the 360 only in terms of consoles this year. That's a pretty established lineup of titles that should impress.
