Mina the Hollower | Review Thread

All I get excited for nowadays are Indies tbh. AAA game's budgets have ballooned so much that the devs are forced to play it safe and produce formulaic experiences that cater to the widest audience and it often results in an experience that doesn't deviate much from it's inspirations. Indies seem to take more risks to differentiate themselves from the pack and, in the right hands, can produce more unique, original, and/or memorable experiences.
Exactly my thoughts as well, and I would also add that most of these small teams tend to be much more passionate. As a result, we get more detailed experiences to really sink our teeth into. They see video games from a different angle, and that passion transpires into the musical score, the sound effects, the physics, the animations… Everything is taken into consideration, and in the end, you get a product made with passion.

you guys will fucking hate me but I cant go back to these graphics. Not now. Not even with the nostalgia feeling.

I think I may finally have morphed into a filthy casual. If they had given it graphics like Silksong I would have been all over it

I'm looking forward to it, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it just as I did Shovelknight.
But I've never really liked the 8-bit look. I like these games despite their visuals, not because of them.

I hope their next game at least goes for an 16 bit aesthetic.

Game looks incredible, I am super into this.

And this is one game you guys cant call Woke Slop (I hope)

I hear you. I've been tired of this 8-bit chiptuned throwback shit for years.

Didn't care much for the demo that was release some time ago. Maybe it's been a bit more refined since then? I'm over souls slop for another indie game, so it'll be a pass regardless.

I never doubted this would be great. Yacht club never misses.

Btw- if any of you like drop puzzle games like Tetris you MUST check out Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. Amazingly addictive and beautiful sprites. Its so underrated.

This developer should have made decent money off Shovel Knight. So what's up with the design of this game? It having a low bit art style is fine, but why the lazy effort in spamming the same assets with a tilemap?

Look at this for example, they couldn't afford to have similar assets to have slightly different coloring or animations? Having the same asset 4 times in row beside each other just looks bad.

I think that screenshot looks nice. What asset are you talking about? The tiles on the ground?

I think it's highly inspired by the limited GBC graphical capabilities!

I wish they wouldn't throw those 10/10 scores out like it was god's gift to gaming. I am going to get this because Shovel Knight is great on Vita. It looks good. Those 10/10 don't mean as much anymore. It's like a solid 8 or 9 after the public gets it.

This is not souls slop at all though. It's more like Zelda. They spent many years working on this it will be far from slop.
It's a mix of the two and that's what I'm tired of when game devs keep trying to shoehorn the souls shit in rather, in this case, just make a Zelda-like. I don't think the game is slop, just the souls element. It's just done to death now along with deck builders and rogue-lites.
I would have actually giggled at "say the thing" to the over use of the word slop, but hey, you tried.

When I look at the sprite work all I see is the work they put into the silhouettes across all the enemies/characters and I think they look great.

No…it is impossible that I could be wrong!

Maybe this is what shill_in_boxes feels like when they are constantly defending Marathons art style…

I will definitely buy it at some point and I am sure enjoy it. Loved Shovel Knight, and metroidvanias are basically my favorite genre and this seems like one of those from a top down perspective.

Just not a fan of the art style. I have no affinity for the Gameboys graphical motifs. Sure I played Links Awakening back in the day but it always just looked like shit (along with every other game on the Gameboy) compared to LttP on SNES. I would much rather this was apeing SNES graphics, or even NES graphics like Shovel Knight did.

Glad to see its getting good reviews....

Even though as I always say, reviews and journos opinions are meaningless

I was a bit... bleh. When I tried the demo so it seems like the game does pick up like i hoped it would.

This is great news!
I absolutely love Shovel knight, but I've been out of the loop for Yacht club games for some time.
It seems like Mina has been coming for a long time, totally forgot about it.
Can't wait to play it 👍

Only take the constraints that you like, and those that are too constraining, just ignore them. That must be so convenient lol.

On GBC, a 8x8 BG tile cannot have more than 4 colors. So they basically never respect this, to begin with... If they are never going to respect the constraints, then they might as well put a decent floor behind the lights, and not that plain brown "just to give the impression that they are actually respecting GBC constraints".

You cannot have more than 10 8x8 sprites on a single line either. You can be sure that this one they didn't even think about pretending to respect it lol.
